Three-dimensional time dependent computation of turbulent flow
The three-dimensional, primitive equations of motion are solved numerically for the case of isotropic box turbulence and the distortion of homogeneous turbulence by irrotational plane strain at large Reynolds numbers. A Gaussian filter is applied to governing equations to define the large scale field. This gives rise to additional second order computed scale stresses (Leonard stresses). The residual stresses are simulated through an eddy viscosity. Uniform grids are used, with a fourth order differencing scheme in space and a second order Adams-Bashforth predictor for explicit time stepping. The results are compared to the experiments and statistical information extracted from the computer generated data

PIC method for modeling the shaped charge problems
The PIC (particle-in-cell) method has been used for computing compressible, multimaterial problems for more than twenty years. The present work extends the same numerical approximation with operator splitting to hydroelastic-plastic flow problems in two-dimensional Eulerian coordinates. Applying the operator splitting method, the basic set of cylindrical equations is split in radial (r) and axial (z) directions. The calculations, performed in each direction separately, are alternated for each time advancement to maintain the accuracy of one-dimensional procedure. A shaped-charge problem is treated using the present code and the results are compared with the experimental data as well as those from other codes. 11 refs
Estimation of Effective Plant Area Index for South Korean Forests Using LiDAR System
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) systems can be used to estimate both vertical and horizontal forest structure. Woody components, the leaves of trees and the understory can be described with high precision, using geo-registered 3D-points. Based on this concept, the Effective Plant Area Indices (PAIe) for areas of Korean Pine (Pinus koraiensis), Japanese Larch (Larix leptolepis) and Oak (Quercus spp.) were estimated by calculating the ratio of intercepted and incident LIDAR laser rays for the canopies of the three forest types. Initially, the canopy gap fraction (GLiDAR) was generated by extracting the LiDAR data reflected from the canopy surface, or inner canopy area, using k-means statistics. The LiDAR-derived PAIe was then estimated by using GLIDAR with the Beer-Lambert law. A comparison of the LiDAR-derived and field-derived PAIe revealed the coefficients of determination for Korean Pine, Japanese Larch and Oak to be 0.82, 0.64 and 0.59, respectively. These differences between field-based and LIDAR-based PAIe for the different forest types were attributed to the amount of leaves and branches in the forest stands. The absence of leaves, in the case of both Larch and Oak, meant that the LiDAR pulses were only reflected from branches. The probability that the LiDAR pulses are reflected from bare branches is low as compared to the reflection from branches with a high leaf density. This is because the size of the branch is smaller than the resolution across and along the 1 meter LIDAR laser track. Therefore, a better predictive accuracy would be expected for the model if the study would be repeated in late spring when the shoots and leaves of the deciduous trees begin to appear
Frame-like Geometry of Double Field Theory
We relate two formulations of the recently constructed double field theory to
a frame-like geometrical formalism developed by Siegel. A self-contained
presentation of this formalism is given, including a discussion of the
constraints and its solutions, and of the resulting Riemann tensor, Ricci
tensor and curvature scalar. This curvature scalar can be used to define an
action, and it is shown that this action is equivalent to that of double field

Unusual low-temperature thermopower in the one-dimensional Hubbard model
The low-temperature thermoelectric power of the repulsive-interaction
one-dimensional Hubbard model is calculated using an asymptotic Bethe ansatz
for holons and spinons. The competition between the entropy carried by the
holons and that carried by the backflow of the spinons gives rise to an unusual
temperature and doping dependence of the thermopower which is qualitatively
similar to that observed in the normal state of high- superconductors.Comment: 11 pages, REVTEX 3.
Orbital quantization in the high magnetic field state of a charge-density-wave system
A superposition of the Pauli and orbital coupling of a high magnetic field to
charge carriers in a charge-density-wave (CDW) system is proposed to give rise
to transitions between subphases with quantized values of the CDW wavevector.
By contrast to the purely orbital field-induced density-wave effects which
require a strongly imperfect nesting of the Fermi surface, the new transitions
can occur even if the Fermi surface is well nested at zero field. We suggest
that such transitions are observed in the organic metal
-(BEDT-TTF)KHg(SCN) under a strongly tilted magnetic field.Comment: 14 pages including 4 figure
Massive Type II in Double Field Theory
We provide an extension of the recently constructed double field theory
formulation of the low-energy limits of type II strings, in which the RR fields
can depend simultaneously on the 10-dimensional space-time coordinates and
linearly on the dual winding coordinates. For the special case that only the RR
one-form of type IIA carries such a dependence, we obtain the massive
deformation of type IIA supergravity due to Romans. For T-dual configurations
we obtain a `massive' but non-covariant formulation of type IIB, in which the
10-dimensional diffeomorphism symmetry is deformed by the mass parameter.Comment: 21 page
Estimating carbon dynamics in forest carbon pools under IPCC standards in South Korea using CBM-CFS3
The main objective of this study was to estimate past and future dynamics of forest carbon pools in South Korea, as classified by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Good Practice Guidance (GPG) and to test the Carbon Budget Model of the Canadian Forest Sector 3 (CBM-CFS3). Inventory data required in CBM-CFS3 were extracted from Korea’s 3rd Forest Type Map. The site index in the inventory data was estimated through regression models developed using 5th National Forest Inventory (NFI) data with 4,000 plots. Necessary yield tables to a stand age of over 100 years, stratified by species, were prepared through the estimation of volume per ha with tree species and site index and stand age. We considered thinning and cutting regulations for sustainable forest management announced by the Korean Forest Service and that the forest area was constant over from 1992 to 2092. We estimated the carbon stocks and their changes of aboveground biomass, belowground biomass, litter, dead wood, and soil. Validation was conducted based on the 5th NFI and statistical data. Our results showed that the carbon content of the total forest area increased from 509.7 Tg C to 1007.3 Tg C at a rate of 11.8 Tg C yr-1 during 1992-2034. Results also showed that AGB (Above Ground Biomass), BGB (Below Ground Biomass), DW (Dead Wood), L (Litter), and SOM (Soil Organic Matter) changed from 54.6, 30.2, 15.9, 43.6, and 373.9 Tg C in 1992 to 455.6, 100.77, 32.89, 65.46, and 369.2 Tg C in 2034, respectively. However, the amount of forest carbon was projected to decrease due to large increases in harvest rates as most of the forest reaches the legislated cutting age during 2035-2045. Our simulation estimated that by 2045 AGB, BGB, and SOM decreased to 347.8, 78.2, and 368.9 Tg C, respectively, while DW and L increased to 46.8 and 89.1 Tg C, respectively. The carbon content of the total forested area starts to stabilize after 2045 as the annual stand growth gradually decreases. Finally in 2092, the carbon content of AGB, BGB, DW, L, and SOM was estimated as 422.3, 93.9, 31.2, 63.0, and 365.1 Tg C, respectively. Through harvesting, over the 100 year period over 200 Tg C were transferred from South Korea’s forests to meet demands for timber, fiber and energy. Good agreement between model results, NFI data and independent studies, demonstrates the applicability of CBM-CFS3 for estimating past and future forest carbon budgets in South Korean forests and for exploring forest management activity impacts in managed forest
Citizen participation in news
The process of producing news has changed significantly due to the advent of the Web, which has enabled the increasing involvement of citizens in news production. This trend has been given many names, including participatory journalism, produsage, and crowd-sourced journalism, but these terms are ambiguous and have been applied inconsistently, making comparison of news systems difficult. In particular, it is problematic to distinguish the levels of citizen involvement, and therefore the extent to which news production has genuinely been opened up. In this paper we perform an analysis of 32 online news systems, comparing them in terms of how much power they give to citizens at each stage of the news production process. Our analysis reveals a diverse landscape of news systems and shows that they defy simplistic categorisation, but it also provides the means to compare different approaches in a systematic and meaningful way. We combine this with four case studies of individual stories to explore the ways that news stories can move and evolve across this landscape. Our conclusions are that online news systems are complex and interdependent, and that most do not involve citizens to the extent that the terms used to describe them imply
Differential regulation of BACE1 expression by oxidative and nitrosative signals
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It is well established that both cerebral hypoperfusion/stroke and type 2 diabetes are risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recently, the molecular link between ischemia/hypoxia and amyloid precursor protein (APP) processing has begun to be established. However, the role of the key common denominator, namely nitric oxide (NO), in AD is largely unknown. In this study, we investigated redox regulation of BACE1, the rate-limiting enzyme responsible for the β-cleavage of APP to Aβ peptides.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Herein, we studied events such as S-nitrosylation, a covalent modification of cysteine residues by NO, and H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>-mediated oxidation. We found that NO and H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2 </sub>differentially modulate BACE1 expression and enzymatic activity: NO at low concentrations (<100 nM) suppresses BACE1 transcription as well as its enzymatic activity while at higher levels (0.1-100 μM) NO induces S-nitrosylation of BACE1 which inactivates the enzyme without altering its expression. Moreover, the suppressive effect on BACE1 transcription is mediated by the NO/cGMP-PKG signaling, likely through activated PGC-1α. H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2 </sub>(1-10 μM) induces BACE1 expression via transcriptional activation, resulting in increased enzymatic activity. The differential effects of NO and H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2 </sub>on BACE1 expression and activity are also reflected in their opposing effects on Aβ generation in cultured neurons in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, we found that BACE1 is highly S-nitrosylated in normal aging brains while S-nitrosylation is markedly reduced in AD brains.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study demonstrates for the first time that BACE1 is highly modified by NO via multiple mechanisms: low and high levels of NO suppress BACE1 via transcriptional and post translational regulation, in contrast with the upregulation of BACE1 by H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>-mediated oxidation. These novel NO-mediated regulatory mechanisms likely protect BACE1 from being further oxidized by excessive oxidative stress, as from H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2 </sub>and peroxynitrite which are known to upregulate BACE1 and activate the enzyme, resulting in excessive cleavage of APP and Aβ generation; they likely represent the crucial house-keeping mechanism for BACE1 expression/activation under physiological conditions.</p
