Quantum network of neutral atom clocks
We propose a protocol for creating a fully entangled GHZ-type state of
neutral atoms in spatially separated optical atomic clocks. In our scheme,
local operations make use of the strong dipole-dipole interaction between
Rydberg excitations, which give rise to fast and reliable quantum operations
involving all atoms in the ensemble. The necessary entanglement between distant
ensembles is mediated by single-photon quantum channels and collectively
enhanced light-matter couplings. These techniques can be used to create the
recently proposed quantum clock network based on neutral atom optical clocks.
We specifically analyze a possible realization of this scheme using neutral Yb

Chemical Abundances Of Open Clusters From High-Resolution Infrared Spectra. I. NGC 6940
We present near-infrared spectroscopic analysis of 12 red giant members of
the Galactic open cluster NGC 6940. High-resolution (R45000) and high
signal-to-noise ratio (S/N > 100) near-infrared H and K band spectra were
gathered with the Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph (IGRINS) on the 2.7m
Smith Telescope at McDonald Observatory. We obtained abundances of H-burning
(C, N, O), (Mg, Si, S, Ca), light odd-Z (Na, Al, P, K), Fe-group
(Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni) and neutron-capture (Ce, Nd, Yb) elements. We report
the abundances of S, P, K, Ce, and Yb in NGC 6940 for the first time. Many OH
and CN features in the H band were used to obtain O and N abundances. C
abundances were measured from four different features: CO molecular lines in
the K band, high excitation C I lines present in both near-infrared and
optical, CH and bands in the optical region. We have also determined
ratios from the R-branch band heads of first overtone (2-0) and
(3-1) (2-0) lines near 23440
\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}} and (3-1) lines at about
23730 \overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}. We have also investigated the HF
feature at 23358.3 \overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}, finding solar
fluorine abundances without ruling out a slight enhancement. For some elements
(such as the group), IGRINS data yield more internally
self-consistent abundances. We also revisited the CMD of NGC 6940 by
determining the most probable cluster members using Gaia DR2. Finally, we
applied Victoria isochrones and MESA models in order to refine our estimates of
the evolutionary stages of our targets.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figure
Learning Interpretable Temporal Properties from Positive Examples Only
We consider the problem of explaining the temporal behavior of black-boxsystems using human-interpretable models. To this end, based on recent researchtrends, we rely on the fundamental yet interpretable models of deterministicfinite automata (DFAs) and linear temporal logic (LTL) formulas. In contrast tomost existing works for learning DFAs and LTL formulas, we rely on onlypositive examples. Our motivation is that negative examples are generallydifficult to observe, in particular, from black-box systems. To learnmeaningful models from positive examples only, we design algorithms that relyon conciseness and language minimality of models as regularizers. To this end,our algorithms adopt two approaches: a symbolic and a counterexample-guidedone. While the symbolic approach exploits an efficient encoding of languageminimality as a constraint satisfaction problem, the counterexample-guided onerelies on generating suitable negative examples to prune the search. Both theapproaches provide us with effective algorithms with theoretical guarantees onthe learned models. To assess the effectiveness of our algorithms, we evaluateall of them on synthetic data.<br
Home-based pre-surgical psychological intervention for knee osteoarthritis (HAPPiKNEES): a feasibility randomized controlled trial
Objective: To determine the feasibility of conducting a trial of a pre-surgical psychological intervention on pain, function, and mood in people with knee osteoarthritis listed for total knee arthroplasty.
Design: Multi-centre, mixed-methods feasibility randomized controlled trial of intervention plus usual care versus usual care.
Setting: Participants’ homes or hospital.
Participants: Patients with knee osteoarthritis listed for total knee arthroplasty and score >7 on either subscales of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale.
Intervention: Up-to 10 sessions of psychological intervention (based on cognitive behavioural therapy).
Main measures: Feasibility outcomes (recruitment and retention rates, acceptability of trial procedures and intervention, completion of outcome measures), and standardized questionnaires assessing pain, function, and mood at baseline, and four and six months post-randomisation.
Results: Of 222 people screened, 81 did not meet inclusion criteria, 64 did not wish to participate, 26 were excluded for other reasons, and 51 were randomized. A total of 30 completed 4-months outcomes and 25 completed 6-month outcomes. Modal number of intervention sessions completed was three (range 2–8). At six-month follow-up, mood, pain, and physical function scores were consistent with clinically important benefits from intervention, with effect sizes ranging from small (d = 0.005) to moderate (d = 0.74), and significant differences in physical function between intervention and usual care groups (d = 1.16). Feedback interviews suggested that participants understood the rationale for the study, found the information provided adequate, the measures comprehensive, and the intervention acceptable.
Conclusion: A definitive trial is feasible, with a total sample size of 444 people. Pain is a suitable primary outcome, but best assessed 6 and 12 months post-surgery
Telomeric circles are abundant in the stn1-M1 mutant that maintains its telomeres through recombination
Some human cancers maintain their telomeres using the alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) mechanism; a process thought to involve recombination. Different types of recombinational telomere elongation pathways have been identified in yeasts. In senescing yeast telomerase deletion (ter1-Δ) mutants with very short telomeres, it has been hypothesized that copying a tiny telomeric circle (t-circle) by a rolling circle mechanism is the key event in telomere elongation. In other cases more closely resembling ALT cells, such as the stn1-M1 mutant of Kluyveromyces lactis, the telomeres appear to be continuously unstable and routinely reach very large sizes. By employing two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and electron microscopy, we show that stn1-M1 cells contain abundant double stranded t-circles ranging from ∼100 to 30 000 bp in size. We also observed small single-stranded t-circles, specifically composed of the G-rich telomeric strand and tailed circles resembling rolling circle replication intermediates. The t-circles most likely arose from recombination events that also resulted in telomere truncations. The findings strengthen the possibility that t-circles contribute to telomere maintenance in stn1-M1 and ALT cells
MINPP1 prevents intracellular accumulation of the chelator inositol hexakisphosphate and is mutated in Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia
Inositol polyphosphates are vital metabolic and secondary messengers, involved in diverse cellular functions. Therefore, tight regulation of inositol polyphosphate metabolism is essential for proper cell physiology. Here, we describe an early-onset neurodegenerative syndrome caused by loss-of-function mutations in the multiple inositol-polyphosphate phosphatase 1 gene (MINPP1). Patients are found to have a distinct type of Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia with typical basal ganglia involvement on neuroimaging. We find that patient-derived and genome edited MINPP1−/− induced stem cells exhibit an inefficient neuronal differentiation combined with an increased cell death. MINPP1 deficiency results in an intracellular imbalance of the inositol polyphosphate metabolism. This metabolic defect is characterized by an accumulation of highly phosphorylated inositols, mostly inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6), detected in HEK293 cells, fibroblasts, iPSCs and differentiating neurons lacking MINPP1. In mutant cells, higher IP6 level is expected to be associated with an increased chelation of intracellular cations, such as iron or calcium, resulting in decreased levels of available ions. These data suggest the involvement of IP6-mediated chelation on Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia disease pathology and thereby highlight the critical role of MINPP1 in the regulation of human brain development and homeostasis
