Dilated Convolutional Neural Networks for Cardiovascular MR Segmentation in Congenital Heart Disease

We propose an automatic method using dilated convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for segmentation of the myocardium and blood pool in cardiovascular MR (CMR) of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). Ten training and ten test CMR scans cropped to an ROI around the heart were provided in the MICCAI 2016 HVSMR challenge. A dilated CNN with a receptive field of 131x131 voxels was trained for myocardium and blood pool segmentation in axial, sagittal and coronal image slices. Performance was evaluated within the HVSMR challenge. Automatic segmentation of the test scans resulted in Dice indices of 0.80±\pm0.06 and 0.93±\pm0.02, average distances to boundaries of 0.96±\pm0.31 and 0.89±\pm0.24 mm, and Hausdorff distances of 6.13±\pm3.76 and 7.07±\pm3.01 mm for the myocardium and blood pool, respectively. Segmentation took 41.5±\pm14.7 s per scan. In conclusion, dilated CNNs trained on a small set of CMR images of CHD patients showing large anatomical variability provide accurate myocardium and blood pool segmentations

Are gritty leaders happier or unhappier? it depends on how prudent they are

    Get PDF
Grit in leaders (and, in general, all employees) typically results in greater success and well-being but also has potential downsides. We propose that gritty leaders also need to be prudent or they may spend excessive time and resources at work, leading to greater work-to-family conflict and, as a result, lower well-being. Findings of two studies support this reasoning. Grittier and imprudent leaders experience greater work-to-family conflict and lower affective well-being, whereas grittier and prudent leaders experience lower work-to-family conflict and greater affective well-being. We therefore conclude that the agentic resource of grit in leaders may be either positively or negatively related to their affective well-being depending on their prudence. Considering that work-to-family conflict and affective well-being are important for the leader’s health and performance, which in turn may influence team/organizational performance, our study contributes to a better understanding of the routes leading to better leadership and team/organizational functioning.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Can Andean Potato be agronomically biofortified with iron and zinc fertilizers?

    Get PDF
This field research shows that application of Zn fertilizers or Zn-enriched NPK fertilizers offers a prompt solution to increasing the Zn concentration in Andean potato tubers, and represents a useful complementary approach to on-going breeding programs. The diploid Chaucha cultivars that showed high tuber Zn concentrations in the absence of Zn fertilization also showed correspondingly higher Zn concentration in tubers following foliar and soil applied Zn. High levels of Zn in potato tubers may significantly improve the diets of Zn-deficient populations with high intake of potato and contribute to better nutritio

Laboratory and Field Studies on Herpetosoma Trypanosomes From Portugal

Several small mammals were trapped in the Arrabida region (Portugal) and checked for the presence of trypanosomes which were found in 33 of the 197 (11.1 %) Mus spretus and in 9 of the 29 (31 %) Crocidura russula observed. To our knowledge, this was the first time that trypanosomes were isolated from these mammals species. In the liver of one dead C. russula was observed different parasite forms. The studies of infectivity to experimental rodents, analyses of the DNA buoyant density and the isoenzymatic profiles, show that trypanosomes isolates from M. spretus were identical to Trypanosoma musculi isolates from Mus musculus. However the isolates from C. russula, although related to the isolates from murine rodents, were clearly separated from these and close to Trypanosoma microti. These findings may allow further studies on the detection of their vectors and on the study of trypanosome reproduction.publishersversionpublishe

Integrability of a conducting elastic rod in a magnetic field

We consider the equilibrium equations for a conducting elastic rod placed in a uniform magnetic field, motivated by the problem of electrodynamic space tethers. When expressed in body coordinates the equations are found to sit in a hierarchy of non-canonical Hamiltonian systems involving an increasing number of vector fields. These systems, which include the classical Euler and Kirchhoff rods, are shown to be completely integrable in the case of a transversely isotropic rod; they are in fact generated by a Lax pair. For the magnetic rod this gives a physical interpretation to a previously proposed abstract nine-dimensional integrable system. We use the conserved quantities to reduce the equations to a four-dimensional canonical Hamiltonian system, allowing the geometry of the phase space to be investigated through Poincar\'e sections. In the special case where the force in the rod is aligned with the magnetic field the system turns out to be superintegrable, meaning that the phase space breaks down completely into periodic orbits, corresponding to straight twisted rods.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figur

In the present study, a prediction of hardness deterioration and abrasive wear was performed through a neural network using artificial intelligence on a material printed in SLA. This article aims to predict the mechanical properties, wear resistance and surface hardness of parts manufactured by SLA stereolithography printing. A full factorial DOE was used to associate the peculiar parameters (print orientation, cure time, layer height) to perform experiments. The mechanical properties were evaluated according to ASTM regulations, with the objective of obtaining feeding data and validation of the predictions of the Taber Wear Index and hardness using an artificial neural network. The experimental results are in good agreement with the measured data with satisfactory prediction errors with a mean square error (MSE) of 0.01 corresponding to abrasive wear using the clear resin and a mean absolute error (MSE) of 0.09 with an R2 of 0.756, the prediction with the neural network with a mean square error (MSE) of 2.47 corresponding to abrasive wear using the tough resin and a mean absolute error (MSE) of 14.3 with an R2 of 0.97. It was shown that the accuracy of the prediction is reasonable, and the network has the potential to be improved if the experimental database for training the network could be expanded.

Sexual risk reduction among Zambian couples

Zambia has over 1 million HIV infections nationwide and an urban prevalence rate of 23%. This study compared the impact of maleinvolvement in multiple and single session risk reduction interventions among inconsistent condom users in Zambia and the role ofserostatus among HIV-seropositive and serodiscordant couples. Couples (N=392) were randomised into intervention arms. Amonginconsistent condom users at baseline (N=83), condom use increased in both conditions and this increase was maintained over a 12-month period. At 12 months, seronegative men in the multiple session condition increased sexual barrier (male and female condoms)use in comparison with those in the single session condition (F=16.13, p=0.001) while seropositive individuals increased sexualbarrier use regardless of condition. Results illustrate the importance of both single and multiple session risk reduction counsellingamong seronegative men in serodiscordant couples in Zambia, and highlight the differing perception of risk between seropositiveand serodiscordant persons. Keywords: HIV, men, women, Africa, high-risk behaviour, behavioural intervention

Walking clinic in ambulatory surgery: a patient based concept: a Portuguese pioneer project

    Get PDF
Walking Clinic is an innovative, efficient and easily reproducible concept adapted to ambulatory surgery. It consists of a preoperative single day work-up, with a surgeon, an anesthetist and a nurse. The aim of this study was to evaluate patient satisfaction and its determinants. Methods: A survey was applied to 171 patients (101 of the Walking Clinic group and 70 not engaged in this new concept). Patient satisfaction was assessed evaluating five major questionnaire items: secretariat (quality of the information and support given), physical space (overall comfort and cleanliness), nurses and medical staff (willingness and expertise), and patients (waiting time until pre-operative consults and exams, waiting time until being scheduled for surgery, surgery day waiting time and postoperative pain control). Furthermore, overall assessment of the received treatment, and probability of patient recommending or returning to our ambulatory unit were also analyzed

Statistical mechanics of topological phase transitions in networks

We provide a phenomenological theory for topological transitions in restructuring networks. In this statistical mechanical approach energy is assigned to the different network topologies and temperature is used as a quantity referring to the level of noise during the rewiring of the edges. The associated microscopic dynamics satisfies the detailed balance condition and is equivalent to a lattice gas model on the edge-dual graph of a fully connected network. In our studies -- based on an exact enumeration method, Monte-Carlo simulations, and theoretical considerations -- we find a rich variety of topological phase transitions when the temperature is varied. These transitions signal singular changes in the essential features of the global structure of the network. Depending on the energy function chosen, the observed transitions can be best monitored using the order parameters Phi_s=s_{max}/M, i.e., the size of the largest connected component divided by the number of edges, or Phi_k=k_{max}/M, the largest degree in the network divided by the number of edges. If, for example the energy is chosen to be E=-s_{max}, the observed transition is analogous to the percolation phase transition of random graphs. For this choice of the energy, the phase-diagram in the [,T] plane is constructed. Single vertex energies of the form E=sum_i f(k_i), where k_i is the degree of vertex i, are also studied. Depending on the form of f(k_i), first order and continuous phase transitions can be observed. In case of f(k_i)=-(k_i+c)ln(k_i), the transition is continuous, and at the critical temperature scale-free graphs can be recovered.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, minor changes, added a new refernce, to appear in PR
