High precision frequency estimation for harpsichord tuning classification

    Get PDF
We present a novel music signal processing task of classifying the tuning of a harpsichord from audio recordings of standard musical works. We report the results of a classification experiment involving six different temperaments, using real harpsichord recordings as well as synthesised audio data. We introduce the concept of conservative transcription, and show that existing high-precision pitch estimation techniques are sufficient for our task if combined with conservative transcription. In particular, using the CQIFFT algorithm with conservative transcription and removal of short duration notes, we are able to distinguish between 6 different temperaments of harpsichord recordings with 96% accuracy (100% for synthetic data)

The Development of a Match to Sample Memory Task and Test of Impulsivity to Investigate Rat Models of Schizophrenia

Animal models of schizophrenia have been developed using chronic exposure to the dissociative anesthetics phencycladine (PCP) and ketamine to induce psychosis in rats. Preliminary research in our laboratory has shown marginal effects of low doses of PCP on the rat P300 event related potential (ERP) similar to those found in human male schizophrenics. As part of a broader program of research investigating the P300 ERP in a rat model of schizophrenia, we have been developing a battery of behavioral paradigms to test for memory deficits and impulsiveness that can be used to differentiate schizophrenic-like behavior from normal behavior in rats. The present research is directed toward developing a Y-maze match to sample (MTS) and a two lever MTS paradigm to screen for memory deficits. In these tests the rat receives a water reinforcer only if it chooses to run to the alley that was lighted or press the lever that was lighted during the sample phase. Memory is tested by inserting a delay interval during which the light cue disappears and the response is prevented. We are also developing a test of impulsivity in which the rat must inhibit a nose poke response until the third brief presentation of a light to obtain a water reinforcer. Early nose pokes result in a time out. Olin Hall construction delayed the initiation of this experiment. Accordingly preliminary results will be presented

Kinderanästhesie zur Protonenbestrahlung: Medizin fernab der Klinik

    Get PDF

Analysis of Ten Generations of Selection for Residual Feed Intake in Yorkshire Pigs

    Get PDF
Ten generations (G) of divergent selection for residual feed intake (RFI) was practiced in Yorkshire pigs. This study shows that feed efficiency based on RFI was moderately heritable and responded to selection. Pigs selected for increased feed efficiency from the low RFI line ate less, grew slightly slower, and were leaner than pigs from the high RFI line. Thus, the results of this study show that selection for decreased RFI can improve feed efficiency and can be included in an economic selection index in addition to growth for reducing feed cost

    Membrane-type 1 matrix metalloproteinase-mediated progelatinase A activation in non-tumorigenic and tumorigenic humaneratinocytes

Elevated expression of type IV collagenases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) has been strongly correlated with tumour progression and metastasis in various tumours. Here, we analysed expression and activation of these MMPs in non-tumourigenic HaCaT cells and the malignant HaCaT variant II-4 rt. In monolayer cultures, both cell types secreted latent MMP-2 (proMMP-2) in comparable amounts, while MMP-9 production was clearly higher in II-4 rt cells. Upon contact with fibrillar collagen type I the malignant II-4 rt cells, but not the HaCaT cells, gained the capability to activate proMMP-2. This process is shown to be membrane-associated and mediated by MT1-MMP. Surprisingly, all membrane preparations from either HaCaT cells or II-4 rt cells grown as monolayers, as well as within collagen gels, contained considerable amounts of active MT1-MMP. However, within collagen gels HaCaT cells showed significantly higher TIMP-2 levels compared to II-4 rt cells. This indicates that TIMP-2 might play a central role for MT1-MMP-mediated gelatinolytic activity. Indeed, collagen type I-induced MT1-MMP-mediated proMMP-2 activation by II-4 rt membranes could be completely abolished by an excess of TIMP-2. In conclusion, our data suggest that MT1-MMP-mediated proMMP-2 activation might be associated with malignant progression of epidermal tumour cells. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
