Alternative Size and Lifetime Measurements for High-Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions
Two-Particle correlations based on the interference of identical particles
has provided the chief means for determining the shape and lifetime of sources
in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Here, Strong and Coulomb induced
correlations are shown to provide equivalent information.Comment: Two confusing typographical errors were correcte
Multiplicity dependence of the average transverse momentum in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC
Cyanobacteria, a group of photosynthetic prokaryotes, oscillate between day and night time metabolisms with concomitant oscillations in gene expression in response to light/dark cycles (LD). The oscillations in gene expression have been shown to sustain in constant light (LL) with a free running period of 24 h in a model cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942. However, equivalent oscillations in metabolism are not reported under LL in this non-nitrogen fixing cyanobacterium. Here we focus on Cyanothece sp. ATCC 51142, a unicellular, nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium known to temporally separate the processes of oxygenic photosynthesis and oxygen-sensitive nitrogen fixation. In a recent report, metabolism of Cyanothece 51142 has been shown to oscillate between photosynthetic and respiratory phases under LL with free running periods that are temperature dependent but significantly shorter than the circadian period. Further, the oscillations shift to circadian pattern at moderate cell densities that are concomitant with slower growth rates. Here we take this understanding forward and demonstrate that the utradian rhythm under LL sustains at much higher cell densities when grown under turbulent regimes that simulate flashing light effect. Our results suggest that the ultradian rhythm in metabolism may be needed to support higher carbon and nitrogen requirements of rapidly growing cells under LL. With a comprehensive Real time PCR based gene expression analysis we account for key regulatory interactions and demonstrate the interplay between clock genes and the genes of key metabolic pathways. Further, we observe that several genes that peak at dusk in Synechococcus peak at dawn in Cyanothece and vice versa. The circadian rhythm of this organism appears to be more robust with peaking of genes in anticipation of the ensuing photosynthetic and respiratory metabolic phases
Enhanced Out-of-plane Emission of K+ Mesons observed in Au+Au Collisions at 1 AGeV
The azimuthal angular distribution of K+ mesons has been measured in Au + Au
collisions at 1 AGeV. In peripheral and semi-central collisions, K+ mesons
preferentially are emitted perpendicular to the reaction plane. The strength of
the azimuthal anisotropy of K+ emission is comparable to the one of pions. No
in-plane flow was found for K+ mesons near projectile and target rapidity.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.Let
Hard photon and neutral pion production in cold nuclear matter
The production of hard photons and neutral pions in 190 MeV proton induced
reactions on C, Ca, Ni, and W targets has been for the first time concurrently
studied. Angular distributions and energy spectra up to the kinematical limit
are discussed and the production cross-sections are presented. From the target
mass dependence of the cross-sections the propagation of pions through nuclear
matter is analyzed and the production mechanisms of hard photons and primordial
pions are derived. It is found that the production of subthreshold particles
proceeds mainly through first chance nucleon-nucleon collisions. For the most
energetic particles the mass scaling evidences the effect of multiple
collisions.Comment: submitted to Phys. Lett.
Recent results in relativistic heavy ion collisions: from ``a new state of matter'' to "the perfect fluid"
Experimental Physics with Relativistic Heavy Ions dates from 1992 when a beam
of 197Au of energy greater than 10A GeV/c first became available at the
Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL)
soon followed in 1994 by a 208Pb beam of 158A GeV/c at the Super Proton
Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research). Previous
pioneering measurements at the Berkeley Bevalac in the late 1970's and early
1980's were at much lower bombarding energies (~ 1 A GeV/c) where nuclear
breakup rather than particle production is the dominant inelastic process in
A+A collisions. More recently, starting in 2000, the Relativistic Heavy Ion
Collider (RHIC) at BNL has produced head-on collisions of two 100A GeV beams of
fully stripped Au ions, corresponding to nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy,
sqrt(sNN)=200 GeV, total c.m. energy 200A GeV. The objective of this research
program is to produce nuclear matter with extreme density and temperature,
possibly resulting in a state of matter where the quarks and gluons normally
confined inside individual nucleons (r < 1 fm) are free to act over distances
an order of magnitude larger. Progress from the period 1992 to the present will
be reviewed, with reference to previous results from light ion and
proton-proton collisions where appropriate. Emphasis will be placed on the
measurements which formed the basis for the announcements by the two major
laboratories: "A new state of matter", by CERN on Feb 10, 2000 and "The perfect
fluid", by BNL on April 19, 2005.Comment: 62 pages, 39 figures. Review article published in Reports on Progress

K^+ production in baryon-baryon and heavy-ion collisions
Kaon production cross sections in nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-delta and
delta-delta interactions are studied in a boson exchange model. For the latter
two interactions, the exchanged pion can be on-mass shell, only contributions
due to a virtual pion are included via the Peierls method by taking into
account the finite delta width. With these cross sections and also those for
pion-baryon interactions, subthreshold kaon production from heavy ion
collisions is studied in the relativistic transport model.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev.
Two-pion correlations in Au+Au collisions at 10.8 GeV/c per nucleon
Two-particle correlation functions for positive and negative pions have been
measured in Au+Au collisions at 10.8~GeV/c per nucleon. The data were analyzed
using one- and three-dimensional correlation functions. From the results of the
three-dimensional fit the phase space density of pions was calculated. It is
consistent with local thermal equilibrium.Comment: 5 pages RevTeX (including 3 Figures
Strong enhancement of extremely energetic proton production in central heavy ion collisions at intermediate energy
The energetic proton emission has been investigated as a function of the
reaction centrality for the system 58Ni + 58Ni at 30A MeV. Extremely energetic
protons (EpNN > 130 MeV) were measured and their multiplicity is found to
increase almost quadratically with the number of participant nucleons thus
indicating the onset of a mechanism beyond one and two-body dynamics.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letter
Strangeness production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions
In these lectures we discuss the investigation of the strange meson
production in proton-proton () and in proton-nucleus () reactions
within an effective Lagrangian model. The kaon production proceeds mainly via
the excitations of (1650), (1710), and (1720) resonant
intermediate nucleonic states, in the collision of two initial state nucleons.
Therefore, the strangeness production is expected to provide information about
the resonances lying at higher excitation energies. For beam energies very
close to the kaon production threshold the hyperon-proton final state
interaction effects are quite important. Thus, these studies provide a check on
the models of hyperon-nucleon interactions. The in-medium production of kaons
show strong sensitivity to the self energies of the intermediate mesons.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, Talk presented in the workshop on Hadron
