    Constraining the Cosmic Background Light with four BL Lac TeV spectra

    The intrinsic BL Lac spectra above few hundreds GeV can be very different from the observed ones due to the absorption effects by the diffuse Extragalactic Background Light (EBL), at present poorly known. With the recent results, there are now 4 sources with good spectral information: Mkn 421 (z=0.031), Mkn 501 (z=0.034), 1ES 1426+428 (z=0.129) and 1ES 1959+650 (z=0.047). Making simple assumptions on the shape of the intrinsic spectra (according to the present blazar knowledge), we have considered the effects of different EBL spectral energy distributions (SED) for the first time on all 4 objects together, deriving constraints for the EBL fluxes.     Effectiveness of the spot-on combination of moxidectin and imidacloprid (AdvocateÂź) in the treatment of ocular thelaziosis by Thelazia callipaeda in naturally infected cats

    Background: The present study evaluated the therapeutic effectiveness of moxidectin 1.0% (w/v) and imidacloprid 10% (w/v) (AdvocateÂź spot-on solution for cats, Bayer Animal Health) against natural infections with the eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda in cats. This study was conducted as a GCP, negative-controlled, blinded and randomised field study in privately owned cats living in an area in southern Italy where T. callipaeda is enzootic. Methods: The study was carried out in 30 cats (19 females and 11 males, aged from 8 months to 5 years, weighing 1.2-5.2 kg) of different breeds, naturally infected by T. callipaeda. At study inclusion (Day 0), animals were physically examined and the infection level was assessed by examination of both eyes for clinical score and live adult T. callipaeda count. Each cat was weighed and randomly assigned to one of the treatment groups (G1: Advocate, G2: untreated control). Clinical assessments and T. callipaeda adult counts were performed on Day 14. At the study completion visit on Day 28, clinical assessments and counts of T. callipaeda adults and larvae were performed. All cats were daily observed by their owners and general health conditions were recorded during the entire period of the study. Results: The primary effectiveness variable was the percentage of animals in G1 group (Advocate) showing a complete elimination (parasitological cure) of adult eye worms at Day 14 and Day 28. The effectiveness of the treatment in the G1 group was 93.3 and 100% at Day 14 and Day 28, respectively, when compared to group G2. Total worm count reduction from both eyes for Advocate was 96.3% on Day 14 and 100% on Day 28. Clinical data were confirmed by the examination of conjunctival pouch flushing. An overall reduction in the number of cats with lacrimation and conjunctivitis was observed following treatment despite the fact that in a few cats treated with Advocate clinical signs persisted due to the chronic nature of the disease. Conclusions: Based on the results of the present trial, a single dose of Advocate was found to be safe and highly effective in the treatment of natural T. callipaeda infection in cats

    OPTIMIZATION TO INCREASE ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF A SIROCCO CENTRIFUGAL FAN USING COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS (CFD)

    This paper presents a numerical and experimental study on the aerodynamic performance of Sirocco centrifugal fans seeking an increase in energy efficiency. Numerical simulations are performed by the Finite-Volume Method commercial code ANSYS Fluent. Characteristics such as flow rate at the outlet, consumed power and sound pressure levels emitted by centrifugal fans with the original model of 16 blades and the optimized models of 16 and 14 blades are compared. Numerical calculations are performed by the continuity equation, the Reynolds Averaged Navier- Stokes (RANS) equations and the k-ω SST turbulence model. The quality of the mesh is evaluated for three different mesh densities. Results demonstrate that it was possible to obtain an increase of flow rate up to 22.7%, and reductions in the noise levels without increasing the consumption of the electric motor

    EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF THE AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE OF SMALL WIND TURBINES CONFECTIONED IN 3D PROTOTYPING

    This paper presents the experimental evaluation of the aerodynamic performance of two small wind turbines models with five blades in the Aerodynamic Tunnel Professor Debi Pada Sadhu. The models were confectioned on a reduced scale using 3D prototyping, the first one was designed using the blade element method, assuming the power coefficient of Betz, named Optimal Blade Betz (OBB) and the second is modified from the first one, named Optimal Blade Betz Modified (OBBM). The velocity distribution in the cross section of the tunnel was determined with the aid of a Pitot tube before the evaluation of the equipment. With the known tunnel velocity profile, the static torque of the prototypes were determined with the use of a digital torquemeter coupled to the machine axis, which recorded the readings for the speed range of 1 m/s to 9.88 m/s. Also with the torquemeter, were evaluated the influence of the angular position of the blades in the measured torque. The blades were designed allowing vary their angular position in the hub, thus changing the angle of attack, and by consequence, the torque produced. A photo tachometer was employed to measure the rotation of the model in free spin. With the experimental data, the curves of static torque and angular velocity were determined as a function of incident speed. Through experimental determination of the incident velocity profile and the velocity profile in the aerodynamic wake of each turbine, the variation of the amount of momentum of the outflow was evaluated, and so the power extracted by the rotor in free rotation. This study aims to contribute to the design of a real small wind turbine, informing the aerodynamic characteristics of the equipment that can be constructed with this layout. The experimental results demonstrate good approximation for torque and power to the results obtained by evaluation by element of the blade method. The turbine constructed with Optimal Betz Blades presented static torque 17.8% higher than constructed with the Modified Blades and extracted 22% more power from the air outflow

    The FIRST Bright Quasar Survey. II. 60 Nights and 1200 Spectra Later

    We have used the VLA FIRST survey and the APM catalog of the POSS-I plates as the basis for constructing a new radio-selected sample of optically bright quasars. This is the first radio-selected sample that is competitive in size with current optically selected quasar surveys. Using only two basic criteria, radio-optical positional coincidence and optical morphology, quasars and BL Lacs can be identified with 60% selection efficiency; the efficiency increases to 70% for objects fainter than magnitude 17. We show that a more sophisticated selection scheme can predict with better than 85% reliability which candidates will turn out to be quasars. This paper presents the second installment of the FIRST Bright Quasar Survey with a catalog of 636 quasars distributed over 2682 square degrees. The quasar sample is characterized and all spectra are displayed. The FBQS detects both radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars out to a redshift z>3. We find a large population of objects of intermediate radio-loudness; there is no evidence in our sample for a bimodal distribution of radio characteristics. The sample includes ~29 broad absorption line quasars, both high and low ionization, and a number of new objects with remarkable optical spectra.Comment: 41 pages plus 39 gifs which contain all quasar spectra.     The (co-)occurrence of problematic video gaming, substance use, and psychosocial problems in adolescents

    Aims. The current study explored the nature of problematic (addictive) video gaming and the association with game type, psychosocial health, and substance use. Methods. Data were collected using a paper and pencil survey in the classroom setting. Three samples were aggregated to achieve a total sample of 8478 unique adolescents. Scales included measures of game use, game type, the Video game Addiction Test (VAT), depressive mood, negative self-esteem, loneliness, social anxiety, education performance, and use of cannabis, alcohol and nicotine (smoking). Results. Findings confirmed problematic gaming is most common amongst adolescent gamers who play multiplayer online games. Boys (60%) were more likely to play online games than girls (14%) and problematic gamers were more likely to be boys (5%) than girls (1%). High problematic gamers showed higher scores on depressive mood, loneliness, social anxiety, negative self-esteem, and self-reported lower school performance. Nicotine, alcohol, and cannabis using boys were almost twice more likely to report high PVG than non-users. Conclusions. It appears that online gaming in general is not necessarily associated with problems. However, problematic gamers do seem to play online games more often, and a small subgroup of gamers – specifically boys – showed lower psychosocial functioning and lower grades. Moreover, associations with alcohol, nicotine, and cannabis use are found. It would appear that problematic gaming is an undesirable problem for a small subgroup of gamers. The findings encourage further exploration of the role of psychoactive substance use in problematic gaming

    Simultaneous multi-wavelength observations of the TeV Blazar Mrk 421 during February - March 2003: X-ray and NIR correlated variability

    In the present paper, we have reported the result of simultaneous multi-wavelength observations of the TeV blazar Mrk 421 during February −- March 2003. In this period, we have observed Mrk 421 using Pachmarhi Array of \v{C}erenkov Telescopes (PACT) of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research at Pachmarhi, India. Other simultaneous data were taken from the published literature and public data archives. We have analyzed the high quality X-ray (2-20 keV) observations from the NASA Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We have seen a possible correlated variability between X-ray and J band (1.25 ÎŒ\mu) near infrared (NIR) wavelength. This is the first case of X-ray and NIR correlated variability in Mrk 421 or any high energy peaked (HBL) blazar. The correlated variability reported here is indicating a similar origin for NIR and X-ray emission. The emission is not affected much by the environment of the surrounding medium around the central engine of the Mrk 421. The observations are consistent with the shock-in-jet model for the emission of radiations.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for Publication in ChJA

    Cosmic Ray Protons and Magnetic Fields in Clusters of Galaxies and their Cosmological Consequences

    The masses of clusters of galaxies estimated by gravitational lensing exceed in many cases the mass estimates based on hydrostatic equilibrium. This may suggest the existence of nonthermal pressure. We ask if radio galaxies can heat and support the cluster gas with injected cosmic ray protons and magnetic field densities, which are permitted by Faraday rotation and gamma ray observations of clusters of galaxies. We conclude that they are powerful enough to do this within a cluster radius of roughly 1 Mpc. If present, nonthermal pressures could lead to a revised estimate of the ratio of baryonic mass to total mass, and the apparent baryonic overdensity in clusters would disappear. In consequence, Ωcold\Omega_{\rm cold}, the clumping part of the cosmological density Ωo\Omega_{o}, would be larger than 0.4 h50−1/20.4\,h_{50}^{-1/2}.Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 16 pages, LaTeX, 2 figures, epsfig.sty, aaspp4.st
