Radio-Continuum Observations Of Small, Radially Polarised Supernova Remnant J0519-6902 In The Large Magellanic Cloud
We report on new Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of
SNR J0519-6902. The Supernova Remnant (SNR) is small in size (~8 pc) and
exhibits a typical SNR spectrum of alpha = -0.53 +- 0.07, with steeper spectral
indices found towards the northern limb of the remnant. SNR J0519-6902 contains
a low level of radially orientated polarisation at wavelengths of 3 & 6 cm,
which is characteristic of younger SNRs. A fairly strong magnetic field was
estimated of ~171 microG. The remnant appears to be the result of a typical
Type Ia supernovae, sharing many properties as another small and young Type Ia

Radio Continuum Study of Supernova Remnants in the Large Magellanic Cloud - SNR J0519-6926
We present the results of new high resolution ATCA observations of SNR
J0519-6926. We found that this SNR exhibits a typical "horseshoe" appearance
with alpha = -0.55 +- 0.08 and D=28+-1 pc. No polarization (or magnetic fields)
are detected to a level of 1%. This is probably due to a relatively poor
sampling of the uv plane caused be observing in "snap-shot" mode.Comment: 6 pages 4 figures, to be published in Serbian Astronomical Journa
Quenching of lamellar ordering in an n-alkane embedded in nanopores
We present an X-ray diffraction study of the normale alkane nonadecane
C_{19}H_{40} embedded in nanoporous Vycor glass. The confined molecular crystal
accomplishes a close-packed structure by alignment of the rod-like molecules
parallel to the pore axis while sacrificing one basic principle known from the
bulk state, i.e. the lamellar ordering of the molecules. Despite this disorder,
the phase transitions observed in the confined solid mimic the phase behavior
of the 3D unconfined crystal, though enriched by the appearance of a true
rotator phase known only from longer alkane chains.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

Radio-continuum study of Large Magellanic Cloud Supernova Remnant J0509-6731
We present a detailed study of Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA)
observations ( = 20, 13, 6 & 3~cm) of supernova remnant (SNR)
J0509--6731 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The remnant has a ring
morphology with brightened regions towards the south-western limb. We also find
a second brightened inner ring which is only seen in the radio-continuum. The
SNR is almost circular, with a diameter ranging from 7 to 8~pc, and a steep
radio spectral index between 36 and 3~cm of , which is
characteristic of younger SNRs. We also report detection of radially orientated
polarisation across the remnant at 6~cm, with a mean fractional polarisation
level of ~(26~~13)%. We find the magnetic field (168~G)
and ( ~W
m~Hz~sr , 7.35~pc) to be consistent with other young
remnants

The researchers at the Langley Research Center Flight Simulation Computing System are provided with an advanced real-time digital simulation capability. This capability is controlled at the user interface level by the Real Time Simulation Supervisor. The Supervisor is a group of subprograms loaded with a simulation application program. The Supervisor provides the interface between the application program and the operating system, and coordinates input and output to and from the simulation hardware. The Supervisor also performs various utility functions as required by a simulation application program
The Strongest 100 Point Radio Sources in the LMC at 1.4 GHz
We present the 100 strongest 1.4 GHz point sources from a new mosaic image in
the direction of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The observations making up
the mosaic were made over a ten year period and were combined with Parkes
single dish data at 1.4 GHz to complete the image for short spacing. An initial
list of co-identifications within 10" at 0.843, 4.8 and 8.6 GHz consisted of
2682 sources. Elimination of extended objects and artifact noise allowed the
creation of a refined list containing 1988 point sources. Most of these are
presumed to be background objects seen through the LMC; a small portion may
represent compact H II regions, young SNRs and radio planetary nebulae. For the
1988 point sources we find a preliminary average spectral index of -0.53 and
present a 1.4 GHz image showing source location in the direction of the LMC.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

Responding to university policies and initiatives: the role of reflexivity in the mid-career academic
How do academics make sense of university policies and strategic initiatives and act on them? Interviews were conducted with 27 mid-career academics in different disciplines, different research-intensive university environments and two countries (England and Australia). Data were analysed iteratively utilising a critical realist perspective, specifically, Archer’s modes of reflexivity. The paper argues that individuals’ responses to university policies and initiatives, to changes in policy and policy conflicts can at least partially be understood through interrogating the modes of reflexivity they employ
Academic artisans in the research university
In the changing context of universities, organisational structures for teaching and research problematize academic roles. This paper draws on a critical realist analysis of surveys and interviews with academics from universities in England and Australia. It identifies important academic work, not captured simply in descriptions of teaching or research. It shows that many academics, who are not research high flyers nor award-winning teachers, carry out this essential work which contributes to the effective functioning of their universities. That work is referred to as academic artisanal work and the people who do it as academic artisans. Characteristics and examples of academic artisans are presented and the nature of artisanal work is explored. Implications for higher education management and for future studies are discussed. The paper points to an urgent need to better understand the complex nature of academic work
