The design and use of the Bioethics Consultation Form
The emergence of the ethics consultation as a means to resolve moral crises in clinical medicine has revealed the need for a worksheet that would facilitate intake and analysis. The author developed the “Bioethics Consultation Form” as an attempt to remedy this need. The form is arranged in an outline format and is a useful asset to ethics committee discussions and record keeping. The first section covers basic intake data concerning the patient's medical and personal information, advance directives, and values, as well as the values of the physician and family. After the intake section is completed with the above data, the ethics consultant then turns to the analysis section. This second section allows for (1) the discussion of conflicting values, (2) the identification of priorities, and (3) the elucidation of ethical norms relevant to the case.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/43229/1/11017_2004_Article_BF00489215.pd
Loss of Spin Entanglement For Accelerated Electrons in Electric and Magnetic Fields
Using an open quantum system we calculate the time dependence of the
concurrence between two maximally entangled electron spins with one accelerated
uniformly in the presence of a constant magnetic field and the other at rest
and isolated from fields. We find at high Rindler temperature the proper time
for the entanglement to be extinguished is proportional to the inverse of the
acceleration cubed.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, appendix and other discussion added, fixed some

THERMAL DENATURATION OF MONOMERIC AND TRIMERIC PHYCOCYANINS STUDIED BY STATIC AND SPECTROSCOPY POLARIZED TIME-RESOLVED FLUORESCENCE
C-Phycocyanin (PC) and allophycocyanin (APC). as well as the a-subunit of PC. have been
isolated from the blue-green alga (cyanobacterium). Spirulina platensis. The effects of partial thermal
denaturation of PC and of its state of aggregation have been studied by ps time-resolved, polarized
fluorescence spectroscopy. All measurements have been performed under low photon fluxes (< 10’ ’
photonsipulse x cm’) to minimize singlet-singlet annihilation processes. A complex decay is obtained
under most conditions, which can be fitted satisfactorily with a bi-exponential (7’ = 70400 ps. T? =
1000-3000 ps) for both the isotropic and the polarized part, but with different intensities and time
constants for the two decay curves. The data are interpreted in the frameworkof the model first developed
by Teak and Dale (Biochern. J. 116, 161 (1970)], which divides the spectroscopically different
chromophores in (predominantly) sensitizing (s) and fluorescing U, ones. If one assumes temperature
dependent losses in the energy transfer from the s to the f and between f chromophores. both the
biexponential nature of the isotropic fluorescence decay and the polarization data can be rationalized. In
the isotropic emission (corresponding to the population of excited states) the short lifetime is related to the
s-,f transfer. the longer one to the “free“ decay of the final acceptor(s) (= f). The polarized part is
dominated by an extremely short decay time. which is related to s+f transfer, as well as to resonance
transfer between the f-chromophores
Decoherence and entanglement degradation of a qubit-qutrit system in non-inertial frames
We study the effect of decoherence on a qubit-qutrit system under the
influence of global, local and multilocal decoherence in non-inertial frames.
We show that the entanglement sudden death can be avoided in non-inertial
frames in the presence of amplitude damping, depolarizing and phase damping
channels. However, degradation of entanglement is seen due to Unruh effect. It
is shown that for lower level of decoherence, the depolarizing channel degrades
the entanglement more heavily as compared to the amplitude damping and phase
damping channels. However, for higher values of decoherence parameters,
amplitude damping channel heavily degrades the entanglement of the hybrid
system. Further more, no ESD is seen for any value of Rob's acceleration.Comment: 16 pages, 5 .eps figures, 1 table; Quantum Information Processing,

Corporate governance and financial constraints on strategic turnarounds
The paper extends the Robbins and Pearce (1992) two-stage turnaround response model to include governance factors. In addition to the retrenchment and recovery, the paper proposes the addition of a realignment stage, referring specifically to the re-alignment of expectations of principal and agent groups. The realignment stage imposes a threshold that must be crossed before the retrenchment and hence recovery stage can be entered. Crossing this threshold is problematic to the extent that the interests of governance-stakeholder groups diverge in a crisis situation. The severity of the crisis impacts on the bases of strategy contingent asset valuation leading to the fragmentation of stakeholder interests. In some cases the consequence may be that management are prevented from carrying out turnarounds by governance constraints. The paper uses a case study to illustrate these dynamics, and like the Robbins and Pearce study, it focuses on the textile industry. A longitudinal approach is used to show the impact of the removal of governance constraints. The empirical evidence suggests that such financial constraints become less serious to the extent that there is a functioning market for corporate control. Building on governance research and turnaround literature, the paper also outlines the general case necessary and sufficient conditions for successful turnarounds
A de Sitter Hoedown
Rotating black holes in de Sitter space are known to have interesting limits
where the temperatures of the black hole and cosmological horizon are equal. We
give a complete description of the thermal phase structure of all allowed
rotating black hole configurations. Only one configuration, the rotating Nariai
limit, has the black hole and cosmological horizons both in thermal and
rotational equilibrium, in that both the temperatures and angular velocities of
the two horizons coincide. The thermal evolution of the spacetime is shown to
lead to the pure de Sitter spacetime, which is the most entropic configuration.
We then provide a comprehensive study of the wave equation for a massless
scalar in the rotating Nariai geometry. The absorption cross section at the
black hole horizon is computed and a condition is found for when the scattering
becomes superradiant. The boundary-to-boundary correlators at finite
temperature are computed at future infinity. The quasinormal modes are obtained
in explicit form. Finally, we obtain an expression for the expectation value of
the number of particles produced at future infinity starting from a vacuum
state with no incoming particles at past infinity. Some of our results are used
to provide further evidence for a recent holographic proposal between the
rotating Nariai geometry and a two-dimensional conformal field theory.Comment: 35 + 1 pages, 9 figures; v3: typos correcte
A Guide for the Design of Benchmark Environments for Building Energy Optimization
The need for algorithms that optimize building energy consumption is usually motivated with the high energy consumption of buildings on a global scale. However, the current practice for evaluating the performance of such algorithms does not reflect this goal, as in most cases the performance is reported for one specific simulated building only, which provides no indication about the generalization of the score on other buildings. One approach to overcome this severe issue is to establish a shared collection of environments, each representing one simulated building setup, that would enable researchers to systematically compare and contrast the efficacy of their building optimization algorithms at scale. However, this requires that the individual environments are well designed for this goal. This paper is thus targeting the design of suitable environments for such a collection based on a detailed analysis of related publications that allows the identification of relevant characteristics for suitable environments. Based on this analysis a guide is developed that distills these characteristics into questions, intended to support a discussion of relevant topics during the design of such environments. Additional explanations and examples are provided for each question to make the guide more comprehensible. Finally, it is demonstrated how the guide can be applied, by utilizing it for the design of a novel environment, which represents an office building in tropical climate. This environment is released open source alongside this publication. We also indicate how test scenarios from existing publications could be enhanced to comply with the required characteristics according to our guide, underlining its importance for the future development and evaluation of building energy optimization algorithms, and thus for the sustainability of buildings in general
Quantum Communication in Rindler Spacetime
A state that an inertial observer in Minkowski space perceives to be the
vacuum will appear to an accelerating observer to be a thermal bath of
radiation. We study the impact of this Davies-Fulling-Unruh noise on
communication, particularly quantum communication from an inertial sender to an
accelerating observer and private communication between two inertial observers
in the presence of an accelerating eavesdropper. In both cases, we establish
compact, tractable formulas for the associated communication capacities
assuming encodings that allow a single excitation in one of a fixed number of
modes per use of the communications channel. Our contributions include a
rigorous presentation of the general theory of the private quantum capacity as
well as a detailed analysis of the structure of these channels, including their
group-theoretic properties and a proof that they are conjugate degradable.
Connections between the Unruh channel and optical amplifiers are also
discussed.Comment: v3: 44 pages, accepted in Communications in Mathematical Physic
COVID-19 recovery packages can benefit climate targets and clean energy jobs, but scale of impacts and optimal investment portfolios differ among major economies
To meet the Paris temperature targets and recover from the effects of the pandemic, many countries have launched economic recovery plans, including specific elements to promote clean energy technologies and green jobs. However, how to successfully manage investment portfolios of green recovery packages to optimize both climate mitigation and employment benefits remains unclear. Here, we use three energy-economic models, combined with a portfolio analysis approach, to find optimal low-carbon technology subsidy combinations in six major emitting regions: Canada, China, the European Union (EU), India, Japan, and the United States (US). We find that, although numerical estimates differ given different model structures, results consistently show that a >50% investment in solar photovoltaics is more likely to enable CO2 emissions reduction and green jobs, particularly in the EU and China. Our study illustrates the importance of strategically managing investment portfolios in recovery packages to enable optimal outcomes and foster a post-pandemic green economy
