Crustal structure of southeast Australia from teleseismic receiver functions
Abstract. In an effort to improve our understanding of the seismic character of the crust beneath southeast Australia and how it relates to the tectonic evolution of the region, we analyse teleseismic earthquakes recorded by 24 temporary and 8 permanent broadband stations using the receiver function method. Due to the proximity of the temporary stations to Bass Strait, only 13 of these stations yielded usable receiver functions, whereas seven permanent stations produced receiver functions for subsequent analysis. Crustal thickness, bulk seismic velocity properties, and internal crustal structure of the southern Tasmanides – an assemblage of Palaeozoic accretionary orogens that occupy eastern Australia – are constrained by H–κ stacking and receiver function inversion, which point to the following: a ∼ 39.0 km thick crust; an intermediate–high Vp/Vs ratio (∼ 1.70–1.76), relative to ak135; and a broad (> 10 km) crust–mantle transition beneath the Lachlan Fold Belt. These results are interpreted to represent magmatic underplating of mafic materials at the base of the crust. a complex crustal structure beneath VanDieland, a putative Precambrian continental fragment embedded in the southernmost Tasmanides, that features strong variability in the crustal thickness (23–37 km) and Vp/Vs ratio (1.65–193), the latter of which likely represents compositional variability and the presence of melt. The complex origins of VanDieland, which comprises multiple continental ribbons, coupled with recent failed rifting and intraplate volcanism, likely contributes to these observations. stations located in the East Tasmania Terrane and eastern Bass Strait (ETT + EB) collectively indicate a crust of uniform thickness (31–32 km), which clearly distinguishes it from VanDieland to the west. Moho depths are also compared with the continent-wide AusMoho model in southeast Australia and are shown to be largely consistent, except in regions where AusMoho has few constraints (e.g. Flinders Island). A joint interpretation of the new results with ambient noise, teleseismic tomography, and teleseismic shear wave splitting anisotropy helps provide new insight into the way that the crust has been shaped by recent events, including failed rifting during the break-up of Australia and Antarctica and recent intraplate volcanism.PhD study of lead author has been jointly funded by Abubakar TafawaBalewa University (ATBU
Experiences of disabled women during pregnancy, childbirth and early parenting services: implications for occupational therapy
The aim of this study was to understand the experiences
of women with physical and sensory disability during their
interaction with maternity services. The study was funded by a
national charity whose previous research identified that disabled
women had more negative experiences than non-disabled
women (Birthrights, 2013). This paper specifically discusses
implications for occupational therapy.
Two-phase, inter-professional mixed methods research
was used involving online surveys in phase 1 and narrative
interviews in phase 2. Recruitment was through disability
and parenting networks and social media. Survey data were
analysed descriptively and open questions were themed. Phase 2
telephone interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim
and analysed thematically.
Although overall satisfaction with care was scored highly in
phase 1, negative experiences were described. Key challenges
included a lack of continuity of carer; women feeling that
they were not being listened to; feeling they were treated less
favourably because of disability; and 56% feeling that maternity
care providers did not have appropriate attitudes to disability.
Interview themes echoed these, when women described
implications of not being listened to, including that their
judgement about their own bodies was ignored or undermined.
The research revealed that occupational therapists did
little to support women during this time. While some
occupational therapy input was described, this focused on
equipment provision. Minimal support with the occupations
of parenting was described. The results suggest a clear need
for interprofessional working and the need for occupational
therapists to liaise between midwifery staff and disabled women
Contamination by respiratory viruses on outer surface of medical masks used by hospital healthcare workers
© 2019 The Author(s). Background: Medical masks are commonly used in health care settings to protect healthcare workers (HCWs) from respiratory and other infections. Airborne respiratory pathogens may settle on the surface of used masks layers, resulting in contamination. The main aim of this study was to study the presence of viruses on the surface of medical masks. Methods: Two pilot studies in laboratory and clinical settings were carried out to determine the areas of masks likely to contain maximum viral particles. A laboratory study using a mannequin and fluorescent spray showed maximum particles concentrated on upper right, middle and left sections of the medical masks. These findings were confirmed through a small clinical study. The main study was then conducted in high-risk wards of three selected hospitals in Beijing China. Participants (n = 148) were asked to wear medical masks for a shift (6-8 h) or as long as they could tolerate. Used samples of medical masks were tested for presence of respiratory viruses in upper sections of the medical masks, in line with the pilot studies. Results: Overall virus positivity rate was 10.1% (15/148). Commonly isolated viruses from masks samples were adenovirus (n = 7), bocavirus (n = 2), respiratory syncytial virus (n = 2) and influenza virus (n = 2). Virus positivity was significantly higher in masks samples worn for > 6 h (14.1%, 14/99 versus 1.2%, 1/49, OR 7.9, 95% CI 1.01-61.99) and in samples used by participants who examined > 25 patients per day (16.9%, 12/71 versus 3.9%, 3/77, OR 5.02, 95% CI 1.35-18.60). Most of the participants (83.8%, 124/148) reported at least one problem associated with mask use. Commonly reported problems were pressure on face (16.9%, 25/148), breathing difficulty (12.2%, 18/148), discomfort (9.5% 14/148), trouble communicating with the patient (7.4%, 11/148) and headache (6.1%, 9/148). Conclusion: Respiratory pathogens on the outer surface of the used medical masks may result in self-contamination. The risk is higher with longer duration of mask use (> 6 h) and with higher rates of clinical contact. Protocols on duration of mask use should specify a maximum time of continuous use, and should consider guidance in high contact settings. Viruses were isolated from the upper sections of around 10% samples, but other sections of masks may also be contaminated. HCWs should be aware of these risks in order to protect themselves and people around them
Transdimensional ambient noise tomography of Bass Strait, southeast Australia, reveals the sedimentary basin and deep crustal structure beneath a failed continental rift
Debate is ongoing as to which tectonic model is most consistent with the known geology of southeast Australia, formerly part of the eastern margin of Gondwana. In particular, numerous tectonic models have been proposed to explain the enigmatic geological relationship between Tasmania and the mainland, which is separated by Bass Strait. One of the primary reasons for the lack of certainty is the limited exposure of basement rocks, which are masked by the sea and thick Mesozoic–Cenozoic sedimentary and volcanic cover sequences. We use ambient noise tomography recorded across Bass Strait to generate a new shear wave velocity model in order to investigate crustal structure. Fundamental mode Rayleigh wave phase velocity dispersion data extracted from long-term cross-correlation of ambient noise data are inverted using a transdimensional, hierarchical, Bayesian inversion scheme to produce phase velocity maps in the period range 2–30 s. Subsequent inversion for depth-dependent shear wave velocity structure across a dense grid of points allows a composite 3-D shear wave velocity model to be produced. Benefits of the transdimensional scheme include a data-driven parametrization that allows the number and distribution of velocity unknowns to vary, and the data noise to also be treated as an unknown in the inversion. The new shear wave velocity model clearly reveals the primary sedimentary basins in Bass Strait as slow shear velocity zones which extend down to 14 km in depth. These failed rift basins, which formed during the early stages of Australia–Antarctica break-up, appear to be overlying thinned crust, where high velocities of 3.8–4.0 km s−1 occur at depths greater than 20 km. Along the northern margin of Bass Strait, our new model is consistent with major tectonic boundaries mapped at the surface. In particular, we identify an east dipping velocity transition zone in the vicinity of the Moyston Fault, a major tectonic boundary between the Lachlan and Delamerian orogens, which are part of the Phanerozoic accretionary terrane that makes up eastern Australia. A pronounced lineament of high shear wave velocities (∼3.7–3.8 km s−1) in the lower crust of our new model may represent the signature of relict intrusive magmatism from failed rifting in the early stages of Australia–Antarctica break-up along a crustal scale discontinuity in the Selwyn Block microcontinent which joins Tasmania and Victoria
Temperature dependence of the anomalous effective action of fermions in two and four dimensions
The temperature dependence of the anomalous sector of the effective action of
fermions coupled to external gauge and pseudo-scalar fields is computed at
leading order in an expansion in the number of Lorentz indices in two and four
dimensions. The calculation preserves chiral symmetry and confirms that a
temperature dependence is compatible with axial anomaly saturation. The result
checks soft-pions theorems at zero temperature as well as recent results in the
literature for the pionic decay amplitude into static photons in the chirally

An investigation of corrosion in liquid-metal heat pipes
Research is underway to develop a 75-kW heat pipe to transfer solar energy from the focus of a parabolic dish concentrator to the heater tubes of a Stirling engine. The high flux levels and high total power level encountered in this application have made it necessary to use a high-performance wick structure with fibers on the order of 4 to 8 microns in diameter. This fine wick structure is highly susceptible to corrosion damage and plugging, as dissolved contaminants plate out on the evaporator surface. Normal operation of the heat pipe also tends to concentrate contaminants in localized areas of the evaporator surface where heat fluxes are the highest. Sandia National Laboratories is conducting a systematic study to identify procedures that reduce corrosion and contamination problems in liquid-metal heat pipes. A series of heat pipes are being tested to explore different options for cleaning heat-pipe systems. Models are being developed to help understand the overall importance of operating parameters on the life of heat-pipe systems.
