Guide To Popular Diets, Food Choices, And Their Health Outcome
Integrative medicine is becoming increasingly important for a patient population afflicted with preventable illnesses such as cardiometabolic disease. Diet and nutrition are an under-tapped opportunity in health care for improving wellness and patient-centered health outcomes. Key nutritional principles are reviewed for alternate dietary strategies patients choose from in pursuit of healthy living or to alleviate chronic illness. Whole food eating plans are discussed including plant-based, Mediterranean, Paleo, and ketogenic diets as well as the specific carbohydrate and low FODMAP diets for colitis and irritable bowel syndrome. Opposed to the traditional categorization of diets by macronutrient composition, it is more useful to discuss the nutritional quality of specific foods and available micronutrients. Cardiovascular and other risk factors are reviewed for foods and food combinations, supporting a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, nuts/seeds, and seafood omega-3 fats.Nutrition and lifestyle education is needed to counsel patients on the best dietary strategy that ensures their adherence and improves long-term health outcomes
Comment on `Universal relation between the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and the thermodynamic entropy in simple liquids'
The intriguing relations between Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and self diffusion
coefficients and the excess (thermodynamic) entropy found by Dzugutov and
collaborators do not appear to hold for hard sphere and hard disks systems.Comment: 1 page revte
Affinities of the family Sollasellidae (Porifera, Demospongiae). I. Morphological evidence
Comparison of Sollasella digitata Lendenfeld, 1888, up until the present assigned to its own family Sollasellidae Lendenfeld, 1887 in the order Hadromerida, and Raspailopsis cervicornis Burton, 1959, assigned to Raspailiidae Nardo, 1833 in the order Poecilosclerida, leads to the conclusion that both should be considered congeneric and are best assigned to a single genus Sollasella. This conclusion is based on examination of habit and skeletal characters of the type material of S. digitata and both type and freshly collected material of S. cervicornis. The conclusion is strengthened by the discovery of a new species, Sollasella moretonensis n.sp. collected in North Australia (primarily in the northeastern coast, but also an isolated record from the northwestern Australian coast), which possesses in addition to the characteristic surface pattern and skeletal structure, genuine echinating acanthostyles. The redefined genus Sollasella shares axial / extra-axial arrangement of the skeleton, special surface brushes of oxeas surrounding a single protruding style, and vestigial occurrence of acanthostyles with many Raspailia s.l. Nevertheless, it is retained as a separate genus, on account of its peculiar polygonal arrangement of surface pores. The distribution of the genus is disjunctive including both (southeast, northeast and northwest) Australian and Western Indian Ocean localities, but so far no intermediate records. Based on this morphological evidence, it is proposed – pending publication of corroborating molecular evidence to be presented in a follow-up study – to reassign Sollasella and the family Sollasellidae to the poecilosclerid family Raspailiidae
Mode-coupling theory of the stress-tensor autocorrelation function of a dense binary fluid mixture
We present a generalized mode-coupling theory for a dense binary fluid
mixture. The theory is used to calculate molecular-scale renormalizations to
the stress-tensor autocorrelation function (STAF) and to the long-wavelength
zero-frequency shear viscosity. As in the case of a dense simple fluid, we find
that the STAF appears to decay as over an intermediate range of
time. The coefficient of this long-time tail is more than two orders of
magnitude larger than that obtained from conventional mode-coupling theory. Our
study focuses on the effect of compositional disorder on the decay of the STAF
in a dense mixture.Comment: Published; withdrawn since ordering in the archive gives misleading

Short-wavelength collective modes in a binary hard-sphere mixture
We use hard-sphere generalized hydrodynamic equations to discuss the extended
hydrodynamic modes of a binary mixture. The theory presented here is analytic
and it provides us with a simple description of the collective excitations of a
dense binary mixture at molecular length scales. The behavior we predict is in
qualitative agreement with molecular-dynamics results for soft-sphere mixtures.
This study provides some insight into the role of compositional disorder in
forming glassy configurations.Comment: Published; withdrawn since already published. Ordering in the archive

Transport coefficients for dense hard-disk systems
A study of the transport coefficients of a system of elastic hard disks,
based on the use of Helfand-Einstein expressions is reported. The
self-diffusion, the viscosity, and the heat conductivity are examined with
averaging techniques especially appropriate for the use in event-driven
molecular dynamics algorithms with periodic boundary conditions. The density
and size dependence of the results is analyzed, and comparison with the
predictions from Enskog's theory is carried out. In particular, the behavior of
the transport coefficients in the vicinity of the fluid-solid transition is
investigated and a striking power law divergence of the viscosity in this
region is obtained, while all other examined transport coefficients show a drop
in that density range.Comment: submitted to PR
Phylogeography of the Sponge Suberites diversicolor in Indonesia: Insights into the Evolution of Marine Lake Populations
The existence of multiple independently derived populations in landlocked marine lakes provides an opportunity for fundamental research into the role of isolation in population divergence and speciation in marine taxa. Marine lakes are landlocked water bodies that maintain a marine character through narrow submarine connections to the sea and could be regarded as the marine equivalents of terrestrial islands. The sponge Suberites diversicolor (Porifera: Demospongiae: Suberitidae) is typical of marine lake habitats in the Indo-Australian Archipelago. Four molecular markers (two mitochondrial and two nuclear) were employed to study genetic structure of populations within and between marine lakes in Indonesia and three coastal locations in Indonesia, Singapore and Australia. Within populations of S. diversicolor two strongly divergent lineages (A & B) (COI: p = 0.4% and ITS: p = 7.3%) were found, that may constitute cryptic species. Lineage A only occurred in Kakaban lake (East Kalimantan), while lineage B was present in all sampled populations. Within lineage B, we found low levels of genetic diversity in lakes, though there was spatial genetic population structuring. The Australian population is genetically differentiated from the Indonesian populations. Within Indonesia we did not record an East-West barrier, which has frequently been reported for other marine invertebrates. Kakaban lake is the largest and most isolated marine lake in Indonesia and contains the highest genetic diversity with genetic variants not observed elsewhere. Kakaban lake may be an area where multiple putative refugia populations have come into secondary contact, resulting in high levels of genetic diversity and a high number of endemic specie
Bearing the wrong identity: A case study of an Indo-Pacific common shallow water sponge of the genus Neopetrosia (Haplosclerida; Petrosiidae).
Sponges of the order Haplosclerida are often abundant and characteristic components of Indo-Pacific reefs, but are often misidentified, because of the lack of clear distinctive morphological characters. Neopetrosia exigua is an example of a haplosclerid sponge that is very common in Indonesian shallow coral reef environments but bears several different names. In the present study we investigated type material of several Indo-Pacific Neopetrosia species with a similar morphology and examined freshly collected specimen materials including specimens that are deposited at several institutions. In addition, we used molecular phylogenetic methods for assisting the morphological examinations. We conclude that the true identity of Neopetrosia exigua should be Neopetrosia chaliniformis. Likewise, N. exigua and N. pacifica should be considered as junior synonyms of N. chaliniformis. In conclusion, we advocate that molecular barcoding could significantly aid on sponge species' delimitation that possess limited morphological characters.Conservation Biolog
Phylogenetic Relationships of the Marine Haplosclerida (Phylum Porifera) Employing Ribosomal (28S rRNA) and Mitochondrial (cox1, nad1) Gene Sequence Data
The systematics of the poriferan Order Haplosclerida (Class Demospongiae) has been under scrutiny for a number of years without resolution. Molecular data suggests that the order needs revision at all taxonomic levels. Here, we provide a comprehensive view of the phylogenetic relationships of the marine Haplosclerida using many species from across the order, and three gene regions. Gene trees generated using 28S rRNA, nad1 and cox1 gene data, under maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches, are highly congruent and suggest the presence of four clades. Clade A is comprised primarily of species of Haliclona and Callyspongia, and clade B is comprised of H. simulans and H. vansoesti (Family Chalinidae), Amphimedon queenslandica (Family Niphatidae) and Tabulocalyx (Family Phloeodictyidae), Clade C is comprised primarily of members of the Families Petrosiidae and Niphatidae, while Clade D is comprised of Aka species. The polyphletic nature of the suborders, families and genera described in other studies is also found here
Long Wavelength Instability for Uniform Shear Flow
Uniform Shear Flow is a prototype nonequilibrium state admitting detailed
study at both the macroscopic and microscopic levels via theory and computer
simulation. It is shown that the hydrodynamic equations for this state have a
long wavelength instability. This result is obtained first from the
Navier-Stokes equations and shown to apply at both low and high densities.
Next, higher order rheological effects are included using a model kinetic
theory. The results are compared favorably to those from Monte Carlo
simulation.Comment: 12 pages, including 2 figure
