New Sources for the teaching of history of the Constitution in the Soviet Union: textbooks and school exercise books (1945-1965)
Russian and Soviet Schooling: educational legacies, institutional reforms and national identities.
Robustness of avalanche dynamics in sheared amorphous solids as probed by transverse diffusion
Using numerical simulations, we perform an extensive finite-size analysis of
the transverse diffusion coefficient in a sheared 2D amorphous solid, over a
broad range of strain rates, at temperatures up to the supercooled liquid
regime. We thus obtain direct qualitative evidence for the persistence of
correlations between elementary plastic events up to the vicinity of the glass
transition temperature . A quantitative analysis of the data, combined
with a previous study of the - and -dependence of the
macroscopic stress \cite{ChattorajCaroliLemaitre2010}, leads us to conclude
that the average avalanche size remains essentially unaffected by temperature

The introduction and spread of european-style creches in Russia
The article was submitted on 17.05.2016. This article considers Russia’s turn at the end of the 18th century to European educational models, both institutionally (orphanages, schools, nurseries, and lyceums) and in terms of pedagogical methodology. The crèche is an example of one such institution that was spread widely across the Russian Empire. The aim of this research is to show the development of this institution and to define its function. The author considers how this model was adapted to Russian conditions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Immediately after the Great Reforms, the organisation of crèches was exclusively a product of private initiative: it was only from 1891 that they were developed systematically with support from the state and the ruling dynasty. On the basis of descriptions and statistics, the article evaluates how many children were accepted into these institutions, the methods of education used, the deployment of hygenic safeguards, the financial support available, and the level of education possessed by crèche teachers. The relationships that mothers from the peasantry and the working classes had with these establishments is also discussed. Finally, this piece looks at how the development of a network of creches was linked with the important demographic phenomenon of child mortality. Drawing comparisons with Western and Central Europe, the author arrives at the conclusion that although crèches followed the same scheme in Russia as they did elsewhere, their general condition was unsatisfactory. Thanks to the government’s disinterest until quite late, many plans for crèches remained unrealised on the eve of the First World War
Stability of critical bubble in stretched fluid of square-gradient density-functional model with triple-parabolic free energy
The square-gradient density-functional model with triple-parabolic free
energy, that was used previously to study the homogeneous bubble nucleation [J.
Chem. Phys. 129, 104508 (2008)], is used to study the stability of the critical
bubble nucleated within the bulk under-saturated stretched fluid. The stability
of the bubble is studied by solving the Schr"odinger equation for the
fluctuation. The negative eigenvalue corresponds to the unstable growing mode
of the fluctuation. Our results show that there is only one negative eigenvalue
whose eigenfunction represents the fluctuation that corresponds to the
isotropically growing or shrinking nucleus. In particular, this negative
eigenvalue survives up to the spinodal point. Therefore the critical bubble is
not fractal or ramified near the spinodal.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, Journal of Chemical Physics accepted for

Polarimetry in X- and Gamma-Ray Astronomy: The Ultimate Dimension
Polarization has been a powerful diagnostic tool in radio, microwave, and visible astronomy, providing details of photonproduction mechanisms on much smaller scales than can bedirectly imaged or deduced from photon intensity and energyalone. While polarimetry at other these wavebands (radio, microwave, and optical) is an established technique, highenergy astrophysics lags far behind in this respect. Yet polarizationanalysis has the potential of revealing many detailsabout the magnetic fields, geometries, and emission mechanismsfound in high energy emitting sources. Deviations fromspherical symmetry and/or the presence of ordered magneticfields give rise to polarized radiation: some examples includeanisotropy in solar flares, the presence of jets in microquasarsand blazars, accretion disks around stellar and massive blackholes, accreting and rotation-powered pulsars, and beams ingamma-ray bursts. In addition, null polarization detectionsfrom gamma-ray bursts at x-ray energies have been usedas a test of fundamental physics by placing limits on the possibleviolation of Lorentz invariance
Perturbation of Tunneling Processes by Mechanical Degrees of Freedom in Mesoscopic Junctions
We investigate the perturbation in the tunneling current caused by
non-adiabatic mechanical motion in a mesoscopic tunnel junction. A theory
introduced by Caroli et al. \cite{bi1,bi2,bi3} is used to evaluate second order
self-energy corrections for this non-equilibrium situation lacking
translational invariance. Inelastic signatures of the mechanical degrees of
freedom are found in the current-voltage characteristics. These give
rise to sharp features in the derivative spectrum, .Comment: 22 pages LaTeX + 3 uuencoded PS picture
Resonant tunneling and Fano resonance in quantum dots with electron-phonon interaction
We theoretically study the resonant tunneling and Fano resonance in quantum
dots with electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction. We examine the bias-voltage ()
dependence of the decoherence, using Keldysh Green function method and
perturbation with respect to the e-ph interaction. With optical phonons of
energy , only the elastic process takes place when , in
which electrons emit and absorb phonons virtually. The process suppresses the
resonant amplitude. When , the inelastic process is possible which
is accompanied by real emission of phonons. It results in the dephasing and
broadens the resonant width. The bias-voltage dependence of the decoherence
cannot be obtained by the canonical transformation method to consider the e-ph
interaction if its effect on the tunnel coupling is neglected. With acoustic
phonons, the asymmetric shape of the Fano resonance grows like a symmetric one
as the bias voltage increases, in qualitative accordance with experimental
results.Comment: 28 pages, 11 figure
Derivation of the transverse force on a moving vortex in a superfluid
We describe an exact derivation of the total nondissipative transverse force
acting on a quantized vortex moving in a uniform background. The derivation is
valid for neutral boson or fermion superfluids, provided the order parameter is
a complex scalar quantity. The force is determined by the one-particle density
matrix far away from the vortex core, and is found to be the Magnus force
proportional to the superfluid density.Comment: Latex, 6 page
