No evidence of mass segregation in the low mass Galactic globular cluster NGC 6101
We used a combination of Hubble Space Telescope and ground based data to
probe the dynamical state of the low mass Galactic globular cluster NGC 6101.
We have re-derived the structural parameters of the cluster by using star
counts and we find that it is about three times more extended than thought
before. By using three different indicators, namely the radial distribution of
Blue Straggler Stars, that of Main Sequence binaries and the luminosity (mass)
function, we demonstrated that NGC 6101 shows no evidence of mass segregation,
even in the innermost regions. Indeed, both the BSS and the binary radial
distributions fully resemble that of any other cluster population. In addition
the slope of the luminosity (mass) functions does not change with the distance,
as expected for non relaxed stellar systems. NGC 6101 is one of the few
globulars where the absence of mass segregation has been observed so far. This
result provides additional support to the use of the "dynamical clock"
calibrated on the radial distribution of the Blue Stragglers as a powerful

Probing the MSP prenatal stage: the optical identification of the X-ray burster EXO 1745-248 in Terzan 5
We report on the optical identification of the neutron star burster EXO
1745-248 in Terzan 5. The identification was performed by exploiting HST/ACS
images acquired in Director's Discretionary Time shortly after (approximately 1
month) the Swift detection of the X-ray burst. The comparison between these
images and previous archival data revealed the presence of a star that
currently brightened by ~3 magnitudes, consistent with expectations during an
X-ray outburst. The centroid of this object well agrees with the position, in
the archival images, of a star located in the Turn-Off/Sub Giant Branch region
of Terzan 5. This supports the scenario that the companion should has recently
filled its Roche Lobe. Such a system represents the pre-natal stage of a
millisecond pulsar, an evolutionary phase during which heavy mass accretion on
the compact object occurs, thus producing X-ray outbursts and re-accelerating

The "UV-route" to search for Blue Straggler Stars in Globular Clusters: first results from the HST UV Legacy Survey
We used data from the HST UV Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters to
select the Blue Straggler Star (BSS) population in four intermediate/high
density systems (namely NGC 2808, NGC 6388, NGC 6541 and NGC 7078) through a
"UV-guided search". This procedure consists in using the F275W images in each
cluster to construct the master list of detected sources, and then force it to
the images acquired in the other filters. Such an approach optimizes the
detection of relatively hot stars and allows the detection of complete sample
of BSSs even in the central region of high-density clusters, because the light
from the bright cool giants, which dominates the optical emission in old
stellar systems, is sensibly reduced at UV wavelengths. Our UV-guided
selections of BSSs have been compared to the samples obtained in previous,
optical-driven surveys, clearly demonstrating the efficiency of the UV
approach. In each cluster we also measured the parameter A+, defined as the
area enclosed between the cumulative radial distribution of BSSs and that of a
reference population, which traces the level of BSS central segregation and the
level of dynamical evolution suffered by the system. The values measured for
the four clusters studied in this paper nicely fall along the dynamical

The Terzan 5 puzzle: discovery of a third, metal-poor component
We report on the discovery of 3 metal-poor giant stars in Terzan 5, a complex
stellar system in the the Galactic bulge, known to have two populations at
[Fe/H]=-0.25 and +0.3. For these 3 stars we present new echelle spectra
obtained with NIRSPEC at Keck II, which confirm their radial velocity
membership and provide average [Fe/H]=-0.79 dex iron abundance and
[alpha/Fe]=+0.36 dex enhancement. This new population extends the metallicity
range of Terzan~5 0.5 dex more metal poor, and it has properties consistent
with having formed from a gas polluted by core collapse supernovae.Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ Lette
First evidence of fully spatially mixed first and second generations in globular clusters: the case of NGC 6362
We present the first evidence of multiple populations in the Galactic
globular cluster NGC 6362. We used optical and near-UV Hubble Space Telescope
and ground based photometry, finding that both the sub giant and red giant
branches are split in two parallel sequences in all color magnitude diagrams
where the F336W filter (or U band) is used. This cluster is one of the least
massive globulars (M_tot~5x10^4 M_sun) where multiple populations have been
detected so far. Even more interestingly and at odds with any previous finding,
we observe that the two identified populations share the same radial
distribution all over the cluster extension. NGC 6362 is the first system where
stars from different populations are found to be completely spatially mixed.
Based on N-body and hydrodynamical simulations of multiple stellar generations,
we argue that, to reproduce these findings, NGC 6362 should have lost up to the

M13 multiple stellar populations seen with the eyes of Stromgren photometry
We present a photometric study of M13 multiple stellar populations over a wide field of view, covering approximately 6.5 half-light radii, using archival Isaac Newton Telescope observations to build an accurate multiband Strömgren catalogue. The use of the Strömgren index cy permits us to separate the multiple populations of M13 on the basis of their position on the red giant branch. The comparison with medium and high resolution spectroscopic analysis confirms the robustness of our selection criterion. To determine the radial distribution of stars in M13, we complemented our data set with Hubble Space Telescope observations of the cluster core, to compensate for the effect of incompleteness affecting the most crowded regions. From the analysis of the radial distributions, we do not find any significant evidence of spatial segregation. Some residuals may be present in the external regions where we observe only a small number of stars. This finding is compatible with the short dynamical time-scale of M13 and represents, to date, one of the few examples of fully spatially mixed multiple populations in a massive globular cluster
Variable stars in Terzan 5: additional evidence of multi-age and multi-iron stellar populations
Terzan 5 is a complex stellar system in the Galactic bulge, harboring stellar
populations with very different iron content ({\Delta}[Fe/H] ~1 dex) and with
ages differing by several Gyrs. Here we present an investigation of its
variable stars. We report on the discovery and characterization of three RR
Lyrae stars. For these newly discovered RR Lyrae and for six Miras of known
periods we provide radial velocity and chemical abundances from spectra
acquired with X-SHOOTER at the VLT. We find that the three RR Lyrae and the
three short period Miras (P<300 d) have radial velocity consistent with being
Terzan 5 members. They have sub-solar iron abundances and enhanced
[{\alpha}/Fe], well matching the age and abundance patterns of the 12 Gyr
metal-poor stellar populations of Terzan 5. Only one, out of the three long
period (P>300 d) Miras analyzed in this study, has a radial velocity consistent
with being Terzan 5 member. Its super-solar iron abundance and solar-scaled
[{\alpha}/Fe] nicely match the chemical properties of the metal rich stellar
population of Terzan 5 and its derived mass nicely agrees with being several
Gyrs younger than the short period Miras. This young variable is an additional

Analysis of navigation pattern in the sport of rowing
The effect of weather and environmental conditions on sports has been extensively studied over the last few years (Pezzoli et al., 2010). Based upon the studies of Lobozewicz (1981) and of Kay and Vamplew (2002), Pezzoli and Cristofori (2008) have studied the impact of some specific environmental parameters over different sports using a particular impact index divided into five classes. This analysis clearly shows that most of the outdoor sport activities are strongly influenced by the variation of meteorological parameters. However the impact of meteorological conditions on outdoor sport activities has not yet been extensively studied. The aim of this research is to show that an accurate assessment of wind and wave parameters enables decisive improvements in both training and race strategy planning. Furthermore this analysis provide a very innovative working method for the applied sport research. The work has been based on in-situ measurements of both environmental and performance parameters (wind direction, wind velocity, boat speed and stroke rate) made over different classes and in different race conditions during the 2009 FISA World Championship (Poznan, Poland). In particular a detailed environmental analysis was performed by measuring the wind direction, the wind speed and by evaluating the significant wave height and the wave peak period for each class during the semi-final phase and the final phase. It should be noted that, since wind is a key parameter affecting not only the boat speed but also the race strategy, the assessment of the wind velocity and of the wind direction has been made in connection with the boat movement. The comparison between coupled wind-wave data, boat speed and stroke rate evidently demonstrates that only crews that managed the adaption to changing in the environmental conditions from semi-final to final phase of the race, were able to get better results. Ultra-deep GEMINI near-infrared observations of the bulge globular cluster NGC 6624
We used ultra-deep and images secured with the near-infrared GSAOI
camera assisted by the multi-conjugate adaptive optics system GeMS at the
GEMINI South Telescope in Chile, to obtain a (, ) color-magnitude
diagram (CMD) for the bulge globular cluster NGC 6624. We obtained the deepest
and most accurate near-infrared CMD from the ground for this cluster, by
reaching 21.5, approximately 8 magnitudes below the horizontal
branch level. The entire extension of the Main Sequence (MS) is nicely sampled
and at 20 we detected the so-called MS "knee" in a purely
near-infrared CMD. By taking advantage of the exquisite quality of the data, we
estimated the absolute age of NGC 6624 ( = 12.0 0.5 Gyr), which
turns out to be in good agreement with previous studies in the literature. We
also analyzed the luminosity and mass functions of MS stars down to M
0.45 M finding evidence of a significant increase of low-mass stars
at increasing distances from the cluster center. This is a clear signature of
mass segregation, confirming that NGC 6624 is in an advanced stage of dynamical
