    Resonant x-ray scattering study on multiferroic BiMnO3

    Resonant x-ray scattering is performed near the Mn K-absorption edge for an epitaxial thin film of BiMnO3. The azimuthal angle dependence of the resonant (003) peak (in monoclinic indices) is measured with different photon polarizations; for the σπ\sigma\to\pi' channel a 3-fold symmetric oscillation is observed in the intensity variation, while the σσ\sigma\to\sigma' scattering intensity remains constant. These features are accounted for in terms of the peculiar ordering of the manganese 3d orbitals in BiMnO3. It is demonstrated that the resonant peak persists up to 770 K with an anomaly around 440 K; these high and low temperatures coincide with the structural transition temperatures, seen in bulk, with and without a symmetry change, respectively. A possible relationship of the orbital order with the ferroelectricity of the system is discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    Superclustering at Redshift Z=0.54

    We present strong evidence for the existence of a supercluster at a redshift of z=0.54 in the direction of Selected Area 68. From the distribution of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts we find that there is a large over-density of galaxies (a factor of four over the number expected in an unclustered universe) within the redshift range 0.530 < z < 0.555. By considering the spatial distribution of galaxies within this redshift range (using spectroscopic and photometric redshifts) we show that the galaxies in SA68 form a linear structure passing from the South-West of the survey field through to the North-East (with a position angle of approximately 35 deg East of North). This position angle is coincident with the positions of the X-ray clusters CL0016+16, RX J0018.3+1618 and a new X-ray cluster, RX J0018.8+1602, centered near the radio source 54W084. All three of these sources are at a redshift of approximately z=0.54 and have position angles, derived from their X-ray photon distributions, consistent with that measured for the supercluster. Assuming a redshift of 0.54 for the distribution of galaxies and a FWHM dispersion in redshift of 0.020 this represents a coherent structure with a radial extent of 31 Mpc, transverse dimension of 12 Mpc, and a thickness of approximately 4 Mpc. The detection of this possible supercluster demonstrates the power of using X-ray observations, combined with multicolor observations, to map the large scale distribution of galaxies at intermediate redshifts.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, Latex, aaspp4.sty, accepted for publication in Ap J Letters. This paper presents a new time synchronisation method working independently on each node without exchanging time-sync packets among nodes. This stand-along operation can make field measurement campaigns very time-efficient without a need of constructing and validating the wireless sensor network. The proposed method firstly time-stamps measurements using the accurate time-source from a GPS module on each node, and secondly re-samples the time-stamped data to get time-synchronised data. The time-stamping method proposed in the study utilises Pulse-Per-Second (PPS) signals and NMEA (National Marine Electronics Association) sentences generated by a low-cost GPS module, and the internal timer/counter unit of Arduino. Error analysis on the proposed time-stamping method was carried out and derived an analytical expression for the maximum variance of time-stamping error of the proposed method. Four experiments have been carried out to observe 1) the long-term operational stability of the GPS module, 2) the accuracy of the PPS signals, 3) the accuracy of the proposed time-stamping method, and 4) the validity of the proposed time-synchronisation method for output-only modal analysis on a laboratory floor structure. The GPS module was found to operate or to resume operating stably for the entire test period of seven days even with the limited field of view to the sky. The relative time errors of two PPS signals from four GPS modules were found to be within +/-400 nsec. The time-stamping error measured by two identical time-stamping Arduinos for common trigger signals was found to have a standard deviation of 40.8 nsec, which agreed well with the maximum value of 42.0 nsec predicted by the error analysis. From the output-only modal analysis, the estimated modal parameters were found to agree well with that from the wired acceleration sensors. The phase angle of the cross spectral density of the two wireless accelerations showed that there was no apparent time-synchronisation error observable.     The Luminosity Function of Field Galaxies in the CNOC1 Redshift Survey

    We have computed the luminosity function for 389 field galaxies from the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology cluster redshift survey (CNOC1), over redshifts z = 0.2-0.6. We find Schechter parameters M^* - 5 log h = -19.6 \pm 0.3 and \alpha = -0.9 \pm 0.2 in rest-frame B_{AB}. We have also split our sample at the color of a redshifted but nonevolving Sbc galaxy, and find distinctly different luminosity functions for red and blue galaxies. Red galaxies have a shallow slope \alpha \approx -0.4 and dominate the bright end of the luminosity function, while blue galaxies have a steep \alpha \approx -1.4 and prevail at the faint end. Comparisons of the CNOC1 results to those from the Canada-France (CFRS) and Autofib redshift surveys show broad agreement among these independent samples, but there are also significant differences which will require larger samples to resolve. Also, in CNOC1 the red galaxy luminosity density stays about the same over the range z = 0.2-0.6, while the blue galaxy luminosity density increases steadily with redshift. These results are consistent with the trend of the luminosity density vs. redshift relations seen in the CFRS, though the normalizations of the luminosity densities appear to differ for blue galaxies. Comparison to the local luminosity function from the Las Campanas redshift survey (LCRS) shows that the luminosity density at z \approx 0.1 is only about half that seen at z \approx 0.4. A change in the luminosity function shape, particularly at the faint end, appears to be required to match the CNOC1 and LCRS luminosity functions, if galaxy evolution is the sole cause of the differences seen.     Faint HI 21-cm Emission Line Wings at Forbidden-Velocities

    We present the results of a search for faint HI 21-cm emission line wings at velocities forbidden by Galactic rotation in the Galactic plane using the Leiden/Dwingeloo HI Survey data and the HI Southern Galactic Plane Survey data. These ``forbidden-velocity wings (FVWs)'' appear as protruding excessive emission in comparison with their surroundings in limited (< 2 deg) spatial regions over velocity extent more than ~20 km/s in large-scale (l-v) diagrams. Their high-velocities imply that there should be some dynamical phenomena associated. We have identified 87 FVWs. We present their catalog, and discuss their distribution and statistical properties. We found that 85% of FVWs are not coincident with known supernova remnants (SNRs), galaxies, or high-velocity clouds. Their natures are currently unknown. We suspect that many of them are fast-moving HI shells and filaments associated with the oldest SNRs that are essentially invisible except via their HI line emission.     Viability of optical tracking systems for monitoring deformations of a long span bridge

Paper presented at 6th European Conference on Structural Control (EACS 2016); July 11th - July 13th 2016 - Sheffield, England.Characterisation of both dynamic and quasi-static deformations of suspension bridges is essential to manage their serviceability and to appreciate the internal forces due to the various live loads effects of wind, temperature and traffic. GPS is commonly used for the largest, most flexible structures but the limitations are not well understood and accelerometers cannot capture the extreme low frequency movements. Optical displacement tracking has potential to avoid all these errors but has different types of limitation that need to be evaluated and mitigated. In attempt to cross-validate optical tracking technology against GPS data, a commercial optical system the Imetrum ‘Video Gauge’ was used at Humber Bridge, after first initial experiments on a short span bridge to identify the most effective way to deploy it in the field for measurements at very long range. Some results are presented illustrating the character of the observed deformations and the limitations of the various forms of deformation monitoring instrumentation.     Dynamics of axialized laser-cooled ions in a Penning trap

    We report the experimental characterization of axialization - a method of reducing the magnetron motion of a small number of ions stored in a Penning trap. This is an important step in the investigation of the suitability of Penning traps for quantum information processing. The magnetron motion was coupled to the laser-cooled modified cyclotron motion by the application of a near-resonant oscillating quadrupole potential (the "axialization drive"). Measurement of cooling rates of the radial motions of the ions showed an order-of-magnitude increase in the damping rate of the magnetron motion with the axialization drive applied. The experimental results are in good qualitative agreement with a recent theoretical study. In particular, a classical avoided crossing was observed in the motional frequencies as the axialization drive frequency was swept through the optimum value, proving that axialization is indeed a resonant effect.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

    Optical Spectroscopy of Active Galactic Nuclei in SA57

    The cosmological evolution of X-ray-selected and optically selected Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) show different behaviours interpreted in terms of two different populations. The difference is evident mainly for low luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs), many of which are lost by optical photometric surveys. We are conducting a spectroscopical study of a composite sample of AGN candidates selected in SA57 following different searching techniques, to identify low luminosity AGNs and break down the sample into different classes of objects. AGN candidates were obtained through optical variability and/or X-ray emission. Of special interest are the extended variable objects, which are expected to be galaxies hosting LLAGNs. Among the 26 classified objects a fair number (9) show typical AGN spectra. 10 objects show Narrow Emission Line Galaxy spectra, and in most of them (8/10) optical variability suggests the presence of LLAGNs.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, to appear in A&

    Fuzzy Controller Algorithm for Automated HVAC Control

    This research presents the design framework of the artificial intelligent algorithm for an automated building management system. The AI system uses wireless sensor data or IoT (Internet of Things) and user\u27s feedback together. The wireless sensors collect data such as temperature (indoor and outdoor), humidity, light, user occupancy of the facility, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) which is known as the source of the Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) or New Building Syndrome because VOC are often found in new buildings or old buildings with new interior improvement and they can be controlled and reduced by appropriate ventilation efforts. The collected data using wireless sensors are post-processed to be used in the neural network, which is trained in accordance with the collected data pattern. When the users of the facility have the control of the building\u27s ventilation system and the AI system is fully trained using the user input, it will mimic the user\u27s pattern and control the building system automatically just as the user wants. In this research, data were collected from 4 different buildings: university library, university cafeteria, a local coffee shop, and a residential house. Fuzzy logic controller is also developed for better performance of the HVAC. Indoor air quality, temperature (indoor and outdoor), HVAC fan speed and heater power are used for fuzzified output. As a result, the framework and simulation model for the energy efficient AI controller has been developed using fuzzy logic controller and the neural network-based energy usage prediction model
