An enhancement to the Bees Algorithm with slope angle computation and Hill Climbing Algorithm and its applications on scheduling and continuous-type optimisation problem
This paper focuses on improvements to the Bees Algorithm (BA) with slope angle computation and Hill Climbing Algorithm (SACHCA) during the local search process. First, the SAC was employed to determine the inclination of the current sites. Second, according to the slope angle, the HCA was utilised to guide the algorithm to converge to the local optima. This enabled the global optimum of the given problem to be found faster and more precisely by focusing on finding the available local optima first before turning the attention on the global optimum. The proposed enhancements to the BA have been tested on continuous-type benchmark functions and compared with other optimisation techniques. The results show that the proposed algorithm performed better than other algorithms on most of the benchmark functions. The enhanced BA performs better than the basic BA, in particular on higher dimensional and complex optimisation problems. Finally, the proposed algorithm has been used to solve the single machine scheduling problem and the results show that the proposed SAC and HCA-BA outperformed the basic BA in almost all the considered instances, in particular when the complexity of the problem increases
Vortices and chirality of magnetostatic modes in quasi-2D ferrite disk particles
In this paper we show that the vortex states can be created not only in
magnetically soft "small" (with the dipolar and exchange energy competition)
cylindrical dots, but also in magnetically saturated "big" (when the exchange
is neglected) cylindrical dots. A property associated with a vortex structure
becomes evident from an analysis of confinement phenomena of magnetic
oscillations in a ferrite disk with a dominating role of magnetic-dipolar
(non-exchange-interaction) spectra. In this case the scalar
(magnetostatic-potential) wave functions may have a phase singularity in a
center of a dot. A non-zero azimuth component of the flow velocity demonstrates
the vortex structure. The vortices are guaranteed by the chiral edge states of
magnetic-dipolar modes in a quasi-2D ferrite disk

Preoperative predictors for residual tumor after surgery in patients with ovarian carcinoma
Objectives: Suboptimal debulking (>1 cm residual tumor) results in poor survival rates for patients with an advanced stage of ovarian cancer. The purpose of this study was to develop a prediction model, based on simple preoperative parameters, for patients with an advanced stage of ovarian cancer who are at risk of suboptimal cytoreduction despite maximal surgical effort. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 187 consecutive patients with a suspected clinical diagnosis of advanced-stage ovarian cancer undergoing upfront debulking between January 1998 and December 2003. Preoperative parameters were Karnofsky performance status, ascites and serum concentrations of CA 125, hemoglobin, albumin, LDH and blood platelets. The main outcome parameter was residual tumor >1 cm. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression was employed for testing possible prediction models. A clinically applicable graphic model (nomogram) for this prediction was to be developed. Results: Serum concentrations of CA 125 and blood platelets in the group with residual tumor >1 cm were higher in comparison to the optimally cytoreduced group (p 1 cm based on serum levels of CA 125 and albumin was established. Conclusion: Postoperative residual tumor despite maximal surgical effort can be predicted by preoperative CA 125 and serum albumin levels. With a nomogram based on these two parameters, probability of postoperative residual tumor in each individual patient can be predicted. A virtual collaborative platform to support building information modeling implementation for energy efficiency
There is increased interest in complying with the new regulations and policies associated with the climate change. In particular industries such as the AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) industry seek to find new strategies and practices for facilitating sustainability but also new regulations to improve efficiency at the building level. Institutions and industrial bodies are now in the process of alignment with new legislative stipulations regarding carbon emissions with wider reflection into environment, social and economic models. At building level such strategies refer to decarbonisation and energy efficiency supported with data driven techniques enriched with virtual collaboration and optimization methods.
The increased interest of the research community in Building Information Modeling (BIM) has facilitated numerous solutions ranging from digital products, information retrieval, and optimization techniques all aiming at addressing energy optimization and performance gap reduction.
In this paper we present how a virtual collaborative system can be efficiently used for implementing BIM based energy optimization for controlling, monitoring buildings and running energy optimization, greatly contributing to creating a BIM construction community with energy practices. The solution described, known as energy-bim.com platform, disseminates energy efficient practices and community engagement and provides support for building managers in implementing energy efficient optimization plans
