Measurements of heavy quark production via single leptons at PHENIX
The measurement of single leptons from the semi-leptonic decay of
heavy-flavor hadrons has long been a means for studying heavy-quark production.
PHENIX has measured single muons in pp collisions at forward rapidity and
single electrons in both pp and AuAu collisions at mid-rapidity at
sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The most recent PHENIX single lepton results are presented
in the context of state-of-the-art pQCD calculations. An updated azimuthal
anisotropy, v2(pT), measurement for heavy-flavor single electrons in AuAu

Blood calcium concentration and performance in periparturient and early lactating dairy cows is influenced by plant bioactive lipid compounds
Previous studies ex vivo suggested that plant bioactive lipid compounds (PBLC) can increase ruminal calcium absorption. Therefore, we hypothesized that PBLC feeding around calving may potentially counteract hypocalcemia and support performance in postpartum dairy cows. The corresponding aim of the study was to investigate the effect of PBLC feeding on blood minerals in Brown Swiss (BS) and hypocalcemia-susceptible Holstein Friesian (HF) cows during the period from d −2 to 28 relative to calving and on milk performance until d 80 of lactation. A total of 29 BS cows and 41 HF cows were divided each into a control (CON) and PBLC treatment group. The latter was supplemented with 1.7 g/d menthol-rich PBLC from 8 d before expected calving to 80 d postpartum. Milk yield and composition, body condition score and blood minerals were measured. Feeding PBLC induced a significant breed × treatment interaction for iCa, supporting that PBLC increased iCa exclusively in HF cows; the increase was 0.03 mM over the whole period and 0.05 mM from d 1 to 3 after calving. Subclinical hypocalcemia was seen in one BS-CON and 8 HF-CON cows and 2 BS-PBLC and 4 HF-PBLC cows. Clinical milk fever was detected only in HF cows (2 HF-CON and one HF-PBLC). Other tested blood minerals, such as sodium, chloride, and potassium, as well as blood glucose, were neither affected by PBLC feeding nor breed, nor were their 2-way interactions, except for higher sodium levels in PBLC cows on d 21. Body condition score showed no effect of treatment, except for a lower body condition score in BS-PBLC compared with BS-CON at d 14. Dietary PBLC increased milk yield, milk fat yield, and milk protein yield at 2 consecutive dairy herd improvement test days. As indicated by treatment × day interactions, energy-corrected milk yield and milk lactose yield were increased by PBLC on the first test day only, and milk protein concentration decreased from test d 1 to test d 2 in CON only. The concentrations of fat, lactose, and urea, as well as somatic cell count, were not affected by treatment. The weekly milk yield over the first 11 wk of lactation was 29.5 kg/wk higher for PBLC versus CON across breeds. It is concluded that the applied PBLC induced a small but measurable improvement of calcium status in HF cows in the study period and had additional positive effects on milk performance in both breeds

subsequent lines and forms a state of self-organized criticality. We show the
connection to one-dimensional random walks and diffusion problems, and we

Parasitic helminths induce fetal-like reversion in the intestinal stem cell niche.
Epithelial surfaces form critical barriers to the outside world and are continuously renewed by adult stem cells1. Whereas dynamics of epithelial stem cells during homeostasis are increasingly well understood, how stem cells are redirected from a tissue-maintenance program to initiate repair after injury remains unclear. Here we examined infection by Heligmosomoides polygyrus, a co-evolved pathosymbiont of mice, to assess the epithelial response to disruption of the mucosal barrier. H. polygyrus disrupts tissue integrity by penetrating the duodenal mucosa, where it develops while surrounded by a multicellular granulomatous infiltrate2. Crypts overlying larvae-associated granulomas did not express intestinal stem cell markers, including Lgr53, in spite of continued epithelial proliferation. Granuloma-associated Lgr5- crypt epithelium activated an interferon-gamma (IFN-γ)-dependent transcriptional program, highlighted by Sca-1 expression, and IFN-γ-producing immune cells were found in granulomas. A similar epithelial response accompanied systemic activation of immune cells, intestinal irradiation, or ablation of Lgr5+ intestinal stem cells. When cultured in vitro, granuloma-associated crypt cells formed spheroids similar to those formed by fetal epithelium, and a sub-population of H. polygyrus-induced cells activated a fetal-like transcriptional program, demonstrating that adult intestinal tissues can repurpose aspects of fetal development. Therefore, re-initiation of the developmental program represents a fundamental mechanism by which the intestinal crypt can remodel itself to sustain function after injury

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmatic antibodies and lung disease in cystic fibrosis
AbstractBackground: Bactericidal-permeability-increasing protein (BPI) is a potent anti-microbial protein produced by neutrophil granulocytes. Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmatic antibodies (ANCA) directed against BPI have been detected in up to 91% in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of BPI-ANCA in our CF patients and to determine whether presence of BPI-ANCA is correlated with organ damage. Methods: Twenty-four patients performed respiratory function testing and pulmonary high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). HRCT was scored by using a modified Bhalla method. Serum samples were analysed by direct binding enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for BPI-ANCA. Results: The prevalence of anti-BPI-IgG was 71% and anti-BPI-IgA 33%. Twenty-nine percent of our patients were positive for both BPI-ANCA isotypes. Mean HRCT score was 8.0 ranging from 0 to 22, bronchiectasis presented the most common finding (79%). There was a significant correlation between BPI-ANCA and both HRCT score and FEV1 (p<0.01). High levels of BPI-ANCA were correlated to chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infection (p<0.01). Conclusions: BPI-ANCA was common in our study group. Highly significant correlations between BPI-ANCA and parameters to evaluate lung disease in CF may be a consequence of the inflammation process, or it may indicate a pathogenic role of BPI-ANCA levels in the development of lung disease. More research is needed and the clinical significance of our findings needs further evaluation
Future Research and Developments on Reuse and Recycling of Steelmaking By-Products
In the steel sector, sustainable management of by-products is a key challenge to preserve natural resources and achieve the zero waste goal. In this paper, the main trends of future research and development on reuse and recycling of by-products of the steel industry are presented in the form of a roadmap, which is the outcome of a dissemination project funded by the European Union based on the analysis of the most relevant and recent European projects concerning reuse and recycling of by-products from the steel production cycle. In particular, the developed roadmap highlights the
most important topics of future research activities and challenges related to reuse and recycling of by-products from the existing or alternative steelmaking routes. A time horizon of 10 years has been considered, taking into account the European Commission targets to achieve carbon neutrality in a circular economy context. In addition, current technological trends derived from past and ongoing research projects are analysed. Research needs are based on the main categories of by-products and residual materials. Due to the different pathways to reduce CO2 emissions, each category is divided into subcategories considering both current and novel process routes targeting decarbonization of steel production. This work identifies the most urgent and demanding research directions for the coming years based on a survey targeting the steel companies, services providers of the steel industry and research organizations active in the field

Population genomics of an outbreak of the potato late blight pathogen, <i>Phytophthora infestans</i>, reveals both clonality and high genotypic diversity
An outbreak of the potato late blight pathogen Phytophthora infestans in Denmark was characterized in order to resolve the population structure and determine to what extent sexual reproduction was occurring. A standard set of microsatellite simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers generated using restriction site‐associated DNA sequencing (RAD‐seq) were employed in parallel. A total of 83 individuals, isolated from seven different potato fields in 2014, were analysed together with five Danish whole‐genome sequenced isolates, as well as two Mexican individuals used as an outgroup. From a filtered dataset of 55 288 SNPs, population genomics analyses revealed no sign of recombination, implying clonality. In spite of this, multilocus genotypes were unique to individual potato fields, with little evidence of gene flow between fields. Ploidy analysis performed on the SNPs dataset indicated that the majority of isolates were diploid. These contradictory results with clonality and high genotypic diversity may suggest that rare sexual events likely still contribute to the population. Comparison of the results generated by SSRs vs SNPs data indicated that large marker sets, generated by RAD‐seq, may be advised going forward, as it provides a higher level of genetic discrimination than SSRs
