    This pilot study focuses on the potential of Evidence-based Dialogue Mapping as a participatory action research tool to investigate young teenagers’ scientific argumentation. Evidence-based Dialogue Mapping is a technique for representing graphically an argumentative dialogue through Questions, Ideas, Pros, Cons and Data. Our research objective is to better understand the usage of Compendium, a Dialogue Mapping software tool, as both (1) a learning strategy to scaffold school pupils’ argumentation and (2) as a method to investigate the quality of their argumentative essays. The participants were a science teacher-researcher, a knowledge mapping researcher and 20 pupils, 12-13 years old, in a summer science course for “gifted and talented” children in the UK. This study draws on multiple data sources: discussion forum, science teacher-researcher’s and pupils’ Dialogue Maps, pupil essays, and reflective comments about the uses of mapping for writing. Through qualitative analysis of two case studies, we examine the role of Evidence-based Dialogue Maps as a mediating tool in scientific reasoning: as conceptual bridges for linking and making knowledge intelligible; as support for the linearisation task of generating a coherent document outline; as a reflective aid to rethinking reasoning in response to teacher feedback; and as a visual language for making arguments tangible via cartographic conventions

    Impact of positive surgical margins on overall survival after partial nephrectomy—A matched comparison based on the National Cancer Database

    Introduction The impact of positive surgical margins (PSM) in partial nephrectomy (PN) has been a controversy. Previous studies on the relationship between PSM and overall survival (OS) were either underpowered or had highly dissimilar groups. We used the National Cancer Database with propensity score matching to determine the association between PSM and OS after PN. Materials and methods We identified patients with T1/T2 N0M0 renal cancer treated with PN between 2004 and 2009, and divided them into 2 groups based on their margin status. We used propensity score matching to ensure similarities in age, comorbidity score (CCI), tumor size, histology, and grade between groups. Covariates were compared by χ2 test. Cox multiple regression was used to estimate the hazard ratios (HR) for all-cause mortality. OS between matched groups were compared by log-rank, Breslow and Tarone-Ware tests. Results After excluding those with missing data on margin or survival status, 20,762 patients were eligible for matching. Each matched group had 1,265 patients, similar in age, sex, race, CCI, tumor size, histology, and grade. There were 386 recorded all-cause mortalities over a median follow-up duration of 72.6 months. Cox multiple regression showed a higher risk of all-cause mortality among cases with PSM (HR: 1.393, P = 0.001). Old age, high CCI, and large tumors had higher risks, while papillary and chromophore histologic subtypes had lower risks. PSM was associated with significantly worse OS by log-rank, Breslow, and Tarone-Ware tests. Conclusion PSM is associated with significantly worse OS after PN

    Enhancing surgical performance in cardiothoracic surgery with innovations from computer vision and artificial intelligence: a narrative review

    When technical requirements are high, and patient outcomes are critical, opportunities for monitoring and improving surgical skills via objective motion analysis feedback may be particularly beneficial. This narrative review synthesises work on technical and non-technical surgical skills, collaborative task performance, and pose estimation to illustrate new opportunities to advance cardiothoracic surgical performance with innovations from computer vision and artificial intelligence. These technological innovations are critically evaluated in terms of the benefits they could offer the cardiothoracic surgical community, and any barriers to the uptake of the technology are elaborated upon. Like some other specialities, cardiothoracic surgery has relatively few opportunities to benefit from tools with data capture technology embedded within them (as is possible with robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery, for example). In such cases, pose estimation techniques that allow for movement tracking across a conventional operating field without using specialist equipment or markers offer considerable potential. With video data from either simulated or real surgical procedures, these tools can (1) provide insight into the development of expertise and surgical performance over a surgeon’s career, (2) provide feedback to trainee surgeons regarding areas for improvement, (3) provide the opportunity to investigate what aspects of skill may be linked to patient outcomes which can (4) inform the aspects of surgical skill which should be focused on within training or mentoring programmes. Classifier or assessment algorithms that use artificial intelligence to ‘learn’ what expertise is from expert surgical evaluators could further assist educators in determining if trainees meet competency thresholds. With collaborative efforts between surgical teams, medical institutions, computer scientists and researchers to ensure this technology is developed with usability and ethics in mind, the developed feedback tools could improve cardiothoracic surgical practice in a data-driven way

    A comparative analysis of the skilled use of automated feedback tools through the lens of teacher feedback literacy

    Effective learning depends on effective feedback, which in turn requires a set of skills, dispositions and practices on the part of both students and teachers which have been termed feedback literacy. A previously published teacher feedback literacy competency framework has identified what is needed by teachers to implement feedback well. While this framework refers in broad terms to the potential uses of educational technologies, it does not examine in detail the new possibilities of automated feedback (AF) tools, especially those that are open by offering varying degrees of transparency and control to teachers. Using analytics and artificial intelligence, open AF tools permit automated processing and feedback with a speed, precision and scale that exceeds that of humans. This raises important questions about how human and machine feedback can be combined optimally and what is now required of teachers to use such tools skillfully. The paper addresses two research questions: Which teacher feedback competencies are necessary for the skilled use of open AF tools? and What does the skilled use of open AF tools add to our conceptions of teacher feedback competencies? We conduct an analysis of published evidence concerning teachers’ use of open AF tools through the lens of teacher feedback literacy, which produces summary matrices revealing relative strengths and weaknesses in the literature, and the relevance of the feedback literacy framework. We conclude firstly, that when used effectively, open AF tools exercise a range of teacher feedback competencies. The paper thus offers a detailed account of the nature of teachers’ feedback literacy practices within this context. Secondly, this analysis reveals gaps in the literature, signalling opportunities for future work. Thirdly, we propose several examples of automated feedback literacy, that is, distinctive teacher competencies linked to the skilled use of open AF tools

    A multilevel model for movement rehabilitation in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) using virtual environments

    This paper presents a conceptual model for movement rehabilitation of traumatic brain injury (TBI) using virtual environments. This hybrid model integrates principles from ecological systems theory with recent advances in cognitive neuroscience, and supports a multilevel approach to both assessment and treatment. Performance outcomes at any stage of recovery are determined by the interplay of task, individual, and environmental/contextual factors. We argue that any system of rehabilitation should provide enough flexibility for task and context factors to be varied systematically, based on the current neuromotor and biomechanical capabilities of the performer or patient. Thus, in order to understand how treatment modalities are to be designed and implemented, there is a need to understand the function of brain systems that support learning at a given stage of recovery, and the inherent plasticity of the system. We know that virtual reality (VR) systems allow training environments to be presented in a highly automated, reliable, and scalable way. Presentation of these virtual environments (VEs) should permit movement analysis at three fundamental levels of behaviour: (i) neurocognitive bases of performance (we focus in particular on the development and use of internal models for action which support adaptive, on-line control); (ii) movement forms and patterns that describe the patients' movement signature at a given stage of recovery (i.e, kinetic and kinematic markers of movement proficiency), (iii) functional outcomes of the movement. Each level of analysis can also map quite seamlessly to different modes of treatment. At the neurocognitive level, for example, semi-immersive VEs can help retrain internal modeling processes by reinforcing the patients' sense of multimodal space (via augmented feedback), their position within it, and the ability to predict and control actions flexibly (via movement simulation and imagery training). More specifically, we derive four - key therapeutic environment concepts (or Elements) presented using VR technologies: Embodiment (simulation and imagery), Spatial Sense (augmenting position sense), Procedural (automaticity and dual-task control), and Participatory (self-initiated action). The use of tangible media/objects, force transduction, and vision-based tracking systems for the augmentation of gestures and physical presence will be discussed in this context

    Scaffolding School Pupils’ Scientific Argumentation with Evidence-Based Dialogue Maps

    This chapter reports pilot work investigating the potential of Evidence-based Dialogue Mapping to scaffold young teenagers’ scientific argumentation. Our research objective is to better understand pupils’ usage of dialogue maps created in Compendium to write scientific ex-planations. The participants were 20 pupils, 12-13 years old, in a summer science course for “gifted and talented” children in the UK. Through qualitative analysis of three case studies, we investigate the value of dialogue mapping as a mediating tool in the scientific reasoning process during a set of learning activities. These activities were published in an online learning envi-ronment to foster collaborative learning. Pupils mapped their discussions in pairs, shared maps via the online forum and in plenary discussions, and wrote essays based on their dialogue maps. This study draws on these multiple data sources: pupils’ maps in Compendium, writings in science and reflective comments about the uses of mapping for writing. Our analysis highlights the diversity of ways, both successful and unsuccessful, in which dialogue mapping was used by these young teenagers

    Novel Use of Folate-Targeted Intraoperative Fluorescence, OTL38, in Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy: Report of the First Three Cases

    Partial nephrectomy is now the preferred surgical option for small renal tumors because it allows nephron preservation without compromising oncologic clearance. Its outcomes depend on the surgeon's ability to continuously identify the edges of the tumor during resection, thus leaving an adequate margin around the tumor without excessive removal of normal parenchyma, as well as keeping a short ischemic time. Folate receptors are highly abundant in the normal kidney, and there is a difference in folate receptor expression between malignant and normal renal tissues. Thus, the use of fluorescent agents that target folate receptors should result in differential fluorescence between the tumor and surrounding parenchyma during partial nephrectomy, which, in turn, helps tumor demarcation for identification and resection. A phase 2 study on the novel use of OTL38 in robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy is currently in progress in our institution. The outcomes of the first three cases have shown the possible advantages of OTL38 in intraoperative tumor identification before resection and recognition of residual disease in the surrounding parenchyma after resection. The tumors typically appeared dark while the surrounding parenchyma showed brighter fluorescence. Immediately after tumor resection, the margins of all the specimens appeared to have a uniformly bright fluorescence, suggestive of an intact margin of normal renal parenchyma along the plane of excision. The pattern of intraoperative fluorescence correlates well with immunohistochemistry. No OTL38-related adverse effects have been seen among these three patients.     Ethane steam reforming over a platinum/alumina catalyst: effect of sulphur poisoning

    In this study we have examined the adsorption of hydrogen sulfide and methanethiol over platinum catalysts and examined the effect of these poisons on the steam reforming of ethane. Adsorption of hydrogen sulfide was measured at 293 and 873 K. At 873 K the adsorbed state of hydrogen sulfide in the presence of hydrogen was SH rather than S, even though the Pt:S ratio was unity. The effect of 11.2 ppm hydrogen sulfide or methanethiol on the steam reforming of ethane was studied at 873 K and 20 barg. Both poisons deactivated the catalyst over a number of hours, but methanethiol was found to be more deleterious, reducing the conversion by almost an order of magnitude, possibly due to the co-deposition of sulfur and carbon. Changes in the selectivity revealed that the effect of sulfur was not uniform on the reactions occurring, with the production of methane reduced proportionally more than the other products, due to the surface sensitivity of the hydrogenolysis and methanation reactions. The water-gas shift reaction was affected to a lesser extent. No regeneration was observed when hydrogen sulfide was removed from the feedstream in agreement with adsorption studies. A slight regeneration was observed when methanethiol was removed from the feed, but this was believed to be due to the removal of carbon rather than sulfur. The overall effect of sulfur poisoning was to reduce activity and enhance hydrogen selectivity

    Mechanical Control of Spin States in Spin-1 Molecules and the Underscreened Kondo Effect

    The ability to make electrical contact to single molecules creates opportunities to examine fundamental processes governing electron flow on the smallest possible length scales. We report experiments in which we controllably stretch individual cobalt complexes having spin S = 1, while simultaneously measuring current flow through the molecule. The molecule's spin states and magnetic anisotropy were manipulated in the absence of a magnetic field by modification of the molecular symmetry. This control enabled quantitative studies of the underscreened Kondo effect, in which conduction electrons only partially compensate the molecular spin. Our findings demonstrate a mechanism of spin control in single-molecule devices and establish that they can serve as model systems for making precision tests of correlated-electron theories.Comment: main text: 5 pages, 4 figures; supporting information attached; to appear in Science
