    Tepung Dami Nangka Sebagai Pensubstitusi Karagenan Pada Permen Jelly Nangka

    Jackfruit rags are a jackfruit waste that has the potential properties of a gelling agent in making jackfruit jelly candy. The purpose of this study was to see how the substitution of kappa carrageenan for jackfruit rags, as well as the sugar concentration, affected the sensory properties of jackfruit jelly candy and to figure out which treatment was best, as well as to see how the chemical properties of jackfruit jelly candy with and without jackfruit rags differed. A randomized block design with 2 factors of treatments was applied in this study, i.e.: the proportion of jackfruit rags and kappa-carrageenan (70:30; 60:40; and 50:50%) and the concentration of sucrose (30, 40 and 50%). The substitution of jackfruit rags affected the texture of the jelly candy, making it softer and less clear in appearance, but gave the best flavour and preference score. The sensory qualities of jelly sweets were also affected by sugar concentration. Increasing the concentration of added sugar affected the sweetness of the jelly candy, which became sweeter. The color of the jelly candy changed to brown, which changed the flavour of the jelly candy and made it appealing to the panellists. The best treatment from the analysis was the use of 30% jackfruit rags substitution with 50% sugar with chemical characteristics of 16.47% moisture, 0.458% ash, 7.91% reducing sugar, and acidity degree of 4.49. Compared to jelly candy treated without substituting jackfruit rags (control), the best product (K1G3) contained lower ash and reducing sugar but had higher water content and acidity degree. Keywords: Carrageenan; jackfruit rags; jelly candy; sucrose.   ABSTRAK Dami nangka merupakan salah satu limbah dari buah nangka yang masih jarang untuk dimanfaatkan. Padahal dami nangka memiliki kandungan serat dan pektin yang cukup tinggi, sehingga perlu dimanfaatkan. Salah satu bentuk pemanfaatannya yaitu sebagai substitusi untuk gelling agent pada permen jelly nangka. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh substitusi dami nangka dan konsentrasi sukrosa terhadap sifat sensori permen jelly serta menentuan perlakuan terbaik dan mengkaji perbedaan sifat kimianya dengan permen jelly tanpa substitusi dami nangka. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental rancangan acak kelompok faktorial dengan dua faktor yaitu perbandingan kappa karagenan dan tepung dami nangka terdiri 3 taraf yaitu (70: 30; 60:40; dan 50:50%) dan variasi konsentrasi sukrosa terdiri dari 3 taraf (30, 40 dan 50%). Hasil penelitian menunjukan substitusi dami nangka dan perbedaan konsentrasi sukrosa dalam permen jelly berpengaruh secara nyata terhadap sifat sensori permen jelly yaitu tekstur, kenampakan, flavor, kesukaan, warna dan rasa manis. Perlakuan terbaik yaitu penggunaan substitusi dami nangka sebesar 70:30 dengan sukrosa 50% yang memiliki karakteristik sensori tekstur agak kenyal (2,98), kenampakan agak jernih (3,31), warna kuning (4,66), rasa manis yaitu manis (4,08), flavor enak (3,73), dan kesukaan yaitu suka (3,58). Karakteristik kimia pada perlakuan terbaik yaitu kadar air sebesar 16,47%, kadar abu 0,458%, kadar gula reduksi 7,91% dan derajat keasaman (pH) sebesar 4,49 (asam). Apabila dibandingkan dengan permen jelly tanpa subtitusi dami nangka (kontrol), produk terbaik (K1G3) memiliki kadar abu dan kadar gula reduksi yang lebih rendah namun memiliki kadar air dan derajat keasaman yang lebih tinggi.     Does low-energy sweetener consumption affect energy intake and body weight? A systematic review, including meta-analyses, of the evidence from human and animal studies

    By reducing energy density, low-energy sweeteners (LES) might be expected to reduce energy intake (EI) and body weight (BW). To assess the totality of the evidence testing the null hypothesis that LES exposure (versus sugars or unsweetened alternatives) has no effect on EI or BW, we conducted a systematic review of relevant studies in animals and humans consuming LES with ad libitum access to food energy. In 62 of 90 animal studies exposure to LES did not affect or decreased BW. Of 28 reporting increased BW, 19 compared LES with glucose exposure using a specific ‘learning’ paradigm. Twelve prospective cohort studies in humans reported inconsistent associations between LES use and Body Mass Index (-0.002 kg/m2/year, 95%CI -0.009 to 0.005). Meta-analysis of short- term randomized controlled trials (RCTs, 129 comparisons) showed reduced total EI for LES- versus sugar-sweetened food or beverage consumption before an ad libitum meal (-94 kcal, 95%CI -122 to -66), with no difference versus water (-2 kcal, 95%CI -30 to 26). This was consistent with EI results from sustained intervention RCTs (10 comparisons). Meta-analysis of sustained intervention RCTs (4 weeks to 40 months) showed that consumption of LES versus sugar led to relatively reduced BW (nine comparisons; -1.35 kg, 95%CI –2.28 to - 0.42), and a similar relative reduction in BW versus water (three comparisons; -1.24 kg, 95%CI –2.22 to -0.26). Most animal studies did not mimic LES consumption by humans, and reverse causation may influence the results of prospective cohort studies. The preponderance of evidence from all human RCTs indicates that LES do not increase EI or BW, whether compared with caloric or non-caloric (e.g., water) control conditions. Overall, the balance of evidence indicates that use of LES in place of sugar, in children and adults, leads to reduced EI and BW, and possibly also when compared with water

    Sweet taste exposure and the subsequent acceptance and preference for sweet taste in the diet : systematic review of the published literature

    Background: There are consistent, evidence-based global public health recommendations to reduce intakes of free sugars. However, the corresponding evidence for recommending reduced exposure to sweetness is less clear. Objective: Our aim was to identify and review the published evidence investigating the impact of dietary exposure to sweet-tasting foods or beverages on the subsequent generalized acceptance, preference, or choice of sweet foods and beverages in the diet. Design: Systematic searches were conducted to identify all studies testing relations of variation in exposure to sweetness through foods and beverages with subsequent variation in the generalized acceptance, preference, or choice of sweetened foods or beverages, in humans aged >6 mo. Results: Twenty-one studies met our inclusion criteria, comprising 7 population cohort studies involving 2320 children and 14 controlled trials involving 1113 individuals. These studies were heterogeneous in study design, population, exposure, and outcomes measured, and few were explicitly designed to address our research question. The findings from these were inconsistent. We found equivocal evidence from population cohort studies. The evidence from controlled studies suggests that a higher sweet taste exposure tends to lead to reduced preferences for sweetness in the shorter term, but very limited effects were found in the longer term. Conclusions: A small and heterogeneous body of research currently has considered the impact of varying exposure to sweet taste on subsequent generalized sweet taste preferences, and this evidence is equivocal regarding the presence and possible direction of a relation. Future work should focus on adequately powered studies with well-characterized exposures of sufficient duration.Peer reviewe

    Laboratory Experiment on the Effect of Carbibe Waste and Metakaolin on Strength and Durability Properties of Blended Concrete

    The versatility of concrete makes it the most desirable construction material in the construction industry. The increase in global population growth and urbanization leads to a high demand for more basic infrastructure. The high cost of concrete structures is largely influenced by cost of the constituent materials and it is an important constituent in the making of concrete There are other cementing materials which have shown the ability to improve the properties of concrete and also presents both environmental sustainability and economic benefits. For this study investigation into the suitability of using calcium carbide waste and metakaolin in concrete production, this investigation involves the replacement of cement with blend of calcium carbide waste and metakaolin in an increment of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%. Concrete cube containing CCW-MK was tested for strength at 3, 7, 14, 28 and 56 days of curing age. The optimum compressive strength was recorded at 10% CCW-MK content. 5% concentration of H2SO4 was used to cure the concrete for 28 days. Oxide composition test was done on the CCW and MK. The results revealed that CCW had a CaO content of 86.43% and MK had a sum of Al2O3, SiO2 and Fe2O3 as 98.6%. The workability of CCW-MK increases with increase as the dosage of CCW-MK increase. The compressive strength of CCW-MK concrete increased with an increase in the dosage of CCW-MK and curing period respectively. The retained compressive strength of CCWMK concrete cured in H2SO4 with an increase in the dosage of CCW-MK. Furthermore, the water absorption increases with an increase in the dosage of CCW-MK. Microstructural analysis of CCW-MK concrete was done with the aid scanning electron microscope equipment. The microstructure of the maximum compressive strength sample shows a denser, more homogenous and compact hardened concrete with respect to the control. It was concluded that blended concrete with sufficient strength can be achieved with the addition of CCW and MK blends can as supplementary cementing materials in concrete production

    he book describes the reasons that led the Regional Department of Rural and Territorial Development to take part in the PROFORBIOMED Project. They can be summarized by the need to dispose of a tool for the sustainable management of all the state-owned forests of the Region. As a matter of fact, the Project aims at developing a model of sustainable forest management, through the recovery and reuse of wood scraps from ordinary silvicultural operations, to be used for the production of power and heat inside of a process adopting natural renewable energy sources. The main actions taken and the methodologies adopted are described, as well as the principles and instruments required for the setting up and execution of the work. Some of the most relevant are: the drafting of “Forest Management Plans”, the “Short Supply Chain” and the “Biomass Traceability Protocol”, together with the application of “Best Practices” of Management and the “Monitoring of impacts” caused by the woody biomass extraction procedures. The “forest – wood – energy” chain developed and proposed is exclusively related to the territory pertaining to one municipality, and with CHP plants fed with biomass exclusively produced within the territory of each municipality, in strict compliance with the “sustainable forest management” principles, as well as with the fundamental principle of “short supply chain”. For these reasons the CHP plans proposed shall be sized according to the biomass available in each municipality, with the possibility of integrating residual forest biomass with other waste wood resources potentially available in the territory and coming from prunings in agricultural activities. Therefore, the replicable model prepared and proposed by PROFORBIOMED aims at appraising from the economic point of view a waste product, such is currently considered the residual forest biomass from the forests of Sicily, and at the same time significantly improving the natural environment, thanks to the reduction in oil consumption

    Strategies for the re-naturalization of reforestation: the case study of the Sicilian clay hills

    Over the last decades many areas have been reforested along Europe, with great proportion been made with exotic species. Very often these reforestations do not evolve in more diverse configurations, where some kind of management can be necessary to try to enhance this evolution. The hole is a silvicultural technique consisting in open small gaps to create favourable conditions for the establishment of other species changing the former structure, microclimate and competitive conditions mirroring this natural processes that occurs in structured and mature forests. The best size of the hole seems to be around 500 m\ub2, as small holes may not change significantly the conditions and larger holes seems to favour degradation processes like soil erosion and loss of organic layers. The afforestaion of the Santa Ninfa Natural Reserve (Trapani Province, W-Sicily) were made using essentially Pinus spp. and Eucalyptus camaldulensis. Particularly, this last specie occur in high density monospecific forest structure covering 19 ha (8% of the reserve), where practically no kind of management has been made until now and very few natural regenerations is observed.     Isolation and characterization of buccal fat pad and dental pulp mscs from the same donor

    Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can be harvested from different sites in the oral cavity, representing a reservoir of cells useful for regenerative purposes. As direct comparisons between at least two types of MSCs deriving from the same patient are surprisingly rare in scientific literature, we isolated and investigated the osteoinductive potential of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) and buccal fat pad stem cells (BFPSCs). MSCs were isolated from the third molar dental pulp and buccal fat pads of 12 patients. The number of viable cells was quantified through manual count. Proliferation and osteodifferentiation assays, flow cytometry analysis of cell phenotypes, and osteocalcin release in vitro were performed. The isolation of BFPSCs and DPSCs was successful in 7 out of 12 (58%) and 3 out of 12 (25%) of retrieved samples, respectively. The yield of cells expressing typical stem cell markers and the level of proliferation were higher in BFPSCs than in DPSCs. Both BFP-SCs and DPSCs differentiated into osteoblast-like cells and were able to release a mineralized matrix. The release of osteocalcin, albeit greater for BFPSCs, did not show any significant difference between BFPSCs and DPSCs. The yield of MSCs depends on their site of origin as well as on the protocol adopted for their isolation. Our data show that BFP is a valuable source for the derivation of MSCs that can be used for regenerative treatments

    Emergenze vegetali dell'Isola di Lampedusa

    Per la peculiarit\ue0 storica, geografica ed ambientale l\u2019Isola di Lampedusa, e vista l\u2019estrema frammentariet\ue0 delle formazioni preforestali, l\u2019esiguit\ue0 dei popolamenti (e degli individui) delle specie legnose assumono un valore scientifico e conservazionistico particolarmente elevato. Per queste ragioni \ue8 stato fatto un censimento eseguito con strumentazione GPS. Sull\u2019isola crescono diverse specie di rilevante interesse conservazionistico, numerose sono infatti le specie endemiche, esclusive, rare e/o a rischio di estinzione perch\ue9 legate a habitat molto vulnerabili e localizzati. A questa ragione d\u2019interesse generale per questi taxa si somma il fatto che buona parte delle specie arboree tipiche della vegetazione primaria dell\u2019isola, il pi\uf9 delle volte sopravvivono localmente con popolamenti costituiti da pochissimi (e talora singoli!) individui. Juniperus turbinata e Olea europaea var. sylvestris sono le due specie forestali di gran lunga pi\uf9 comuni tra quelle indagate . Meno positivo \ue8 il risultato dell\u2019analisi della rinnovazione, che ha permesso di individuare appena una trentina di giovani individui di ginepro e nessuno di olivastro. La presenza delle due specie sull\u2019isola risulta circoscritta esclusivamente ai valloni stretti ed incisi che sboccano sulla costa meridionale dell\u2019isola, disegnando un complesso sistema in cui si alternano profonde insenature e pendii rocciosi subpianeggianti. Per ambedue le specie si \ue8 registrata una netta prevalenza (ca. 80% dei ginepri e ca. 95% degli olivastri!) in corrispondenza delle esposizioni meridionali dell\u2019isola che, sebbene pi\uf9 soleggiate godono dell\u2019effetto benefico dei venti umidi provenienti da meridione

    Additively Manufactured RCS for Small Satellites and Landers

    After a fifty year absence, NASA’s return to the lunar surface under the Artemis Program – for long term human exploration and utilization – is driving commercial and academic opportunities for small satellite and small lander platforms (e.g., Commercial Lunar Payload Services program – CLPS). Bipropellant thrusters are a reliable, low risk, and flight proven method for the propulsion and attitude control that is required for complex maneuvers such entry, descent, and landing (EDL) or in-space proximity operations. However, due to the increasingly competitive commercial spaceflight market in the last decade, satellite subsystems must also be affordable to buy their way into the final mission design and engineering solution. Therefore starting in 2019, and based off prior satellite integration work, Aerojet Rocketdyne (AR) undertook an advanced propulsion development effort to combine modern metal additive manufacturing (AM) techniques with thrust scalable hypergolic MON-25 propulsion technology to create a high performance and fully integrated (i.e., multiple thrusters integrated into a single package) reaction control system (RCS) at a fraction of the production cost when compared to the heritage designs that are assembled from individual thrusters. The point-of-departure for the RCS design comes from a new line of additively manufactured thrusters that stably burn volatile MON-25 oxidizer with monomethylhydrazine (MMH) fuel at thrust levels of 5 lbf and 100 lbf. Cost at the subsystem level is lowered by the AM integration of parts and functions which reduces the build of materials, touch labor, and assembly time. In addition, AM allows the design to be adaptable to changing requirements such as the number of thrusters, orientation, and thrust level. Cost at the satellite level is reduced by leveraging MON-25’s lower freezing point of -55 °C (compared to traditional dinitrogen tetroxide oxidizer) to minimize mass, thermal, and power requirements while operating in deep-space environments. In addition, thruster operation at the equal volume mixture ratio for MMH/MON-25 allows for a modular approach to tank design and a predictable center of gravity during maneuvering. This paper provides an overview of the ISE-5 and the ISE-100 MON-25 thruster technology that powers the integrated designs as well as the development progress of the AM RCS concept itself. This includes reduction to practice activities such as proof-of-concept AM material test demonstrators and water flow test units

    Sviluppo di modelli innovativi per il monitoraggio multiscala degli indicatori di servizi ecosistemici nelle foreste Mediterranee (Progetto MIMOSE).

    Gli ecosistemi, attraverso le loro funzioni, forniscono un ampio range di beni e servizi, che risultano fondamentali per il benessere dell’uomo. Questi vengono complessivamente definiti Servizi Ecosistemici (SE). I SE possono essere intesi come un flusso di valori verso la societĂ , quale risultato dello stato e della quantitĂ  del capitale naturale disponibile. Il mantenimento degli stocks del capitale naturale puĂČ permettere di prevedere i flussi futuri dei SE, assicurando quindi il benessere dell’uomo per le generazioni future. Il progetto FIRB 2012 MIMOSE Ăš finalizzato allo sviluppo di un approccio multiscala innovativo e all’implementazione di strumenti previsionali volti al monitoraggio dei SE in habitat forestali Mediterranei. Un set di indicatori viene considerato per stimare i SE forniti dalle foreste, sviluppando strumenti integrati per il loro monitoraggio multiscala. Le attivitĂ  di ricerca vertono allo sviluppo di un metodo statistico innovativo per la stima spaziale degli indicatori di SE, sulla base di dati disponibili a diversi livelli di scala spaziale. Sono realizzate mappe wall-to-wall per la fornitura dei SE, derivate da diversi domini spaziali, dal livello di scala locale sino ad aree forestali di grande estensione. I dati sugli indicatori dei SE sono forniti nel contesto di attivitĂ  di campionamento giĂ  stabilite (raccolta dati a livello di aree di saggio e di popolamento), per poi applicare tecniche di spazializzazione per aggregare i dati raccolti su scala locale a livelli di scala piĂč ampia (paesaggio, scala regionale); l’approccio utilizzato viene valutato attraverso l’applicazione di strumenti di monitoraggio in un set di aree test. Si procede quindi alla valutazione dei cambiamenti spazio-temporali nella previsione dei SE, considerando indicatori sensibili alla gestione forestale, ovvero capaci di evidenziare cambiamenti nella previsione di fornitura di beni e servizi ad opera dei sistemi forestali, in relazione a differenti scenari gestionali, con l’obiettivo di fornire indicazioni ai gestori forestali ed alle comunitĂ  locali per l’applicazione di pratiche di gestione che possano mantenere o incrementare la fornitura dei SE in un preciso contesto territoriale. Questo progetto permette di realizzare un’attenta analisi dei gaps esistenti negli attuali schemi di inventariazione in relazione alla fornitura dei SE, con l’obiettivo di dare indicazioni utili all’implementazione ed integrazione degli stessi mediante individuazione di nuovi indicatori, nell’ottica di una gestione forestale sostenibile. Le attivitĂ  di ricerca in corso possono concretamente contribuire all’incorporazione dei SE nei processi decisionali connessi alla gestione dei paesaggi forestali, fornendo un’opportunitĂ  per comprendere la congruenza tra i diversi SE negli ambienti forestali
