    Frequency and effects of meeting health-behavior guidelines among adolescents

    Objective: To assess the relationship between overweight status and the concomitant adherence to physical activity, daily screen time, and nutritional guidelines. Methods: Data were derived from the Swiss HBSC survey 2006. Participants (n=8130, 48.7% girls) were divided into two groups: normal-weight (n=7215, 44.8% girls), and overweight (n=915, 34.8% girls), using self-reported height and weight. Groups were compared on adherence to physical activity, screen time and nutritional guidelines. Bivariate analyses were carried out followed by multivariate analyses using normal-weight individuals as the reference category. Results: Regardless of gender, overweight individuals reported more screen time, less physical activity, and less concomitant adherence to guidelines. For boys, the multivariate analysis showed that any amount exceeding screen time recommendations was associated with increased odds of being overweight (>2-4h: adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=l .40; >4-6h: AOR=l .48; >6h: AOR=l .83). A similar relation was found for any amount below physical activity recommendations (4-6 times a week: AOR=1.67; 2-3 times a week: AOR=1.87; once a week or less: AOR=2.1). For girls, not meeting nutritional guidelines was less likely among overweight individuals (0-2 recommendations: AOR=0.54). Regardless of weight status, more than half of adolescents did not comply with any guideline and less than 2% met all 3 at the same time. Conclusions: Meeting current nutritional, physical activity and screen time guidelines should be encouraged with respect to overweight. However, as extremely low rates of concomitant adherence were found regardless of weight status, their achievability is questionable (especially for nutrition) which warrants further research to better adapt them to adolescents

    Anomalous metamagnetic-like transition in a FeRh/Fe3_3Pt interface occurring at T120 K in the field-cooled-cooling curves for low magnetic fields

    We report on the magnetic properties of a special configuration of a FeRh thin film. An anomalous behavior on the magnetisation vs. temperature was observed when low magnetic fields are applied in the plane of a thin layer of FeRh deposited on ordered Fe3_3Pt. The anomalous effect resembles a metamagnetic transition and occur only in the field-cooled-cooling magnetisation curve at temperatures near 120 K in samples without any heat treatment.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1008.195

    Lepton number violation in BsB_s meson decays induced by an on-shell Majorana neutrino

    Lepton-number violation can be induced by the exchange of an on-shell Majorana neutrino NN in semileptonic ΔL=2|\Delta L|=2 decays of the BsB_s meson, Bs0Pπμ+μ+B_s^0 \to P^-\pi^-\mu^+ \mu^+ with P=K,DsP=K, D_s. We investigate the production of such a heavy sterile neutrino through these four-body μ+μ+\mu^+\mu^+ channels and explore the sensitivity that can be reached at the LHCb and CMS experiments. For heavy neutrino lifetimes of τN\tau_N = [1, 100, 1000] ps and integrated luminosities collected of 10 and 50 fb1{}^{-1} at the LHCb and 30, 300, and 3000 fb1{}^{-1} at the CMS, we find a significant sensitivity on branching fractions of the orders BR(Bs0Kπμ+μ+)O(109108){\rm BR}(B_s^0 \to K^- \pi^-\mu^+ \mu^+) \lesssim \mathcal{O}(10^{-9} - 10^{-8}) and BR(Bs0Dsπμ+μ+)O(108107){\rm BR}(B_s^0 \to D_s^- \pi^-\mu^+ \mu^+) \lesssim \mathcal{O}(10^{-8} - 10^{-7}). In the kinematically allowed mass ranges of mN[0.25,4.77]m_N \in [0.25,4.77] GeV and mN[0.25,3.29]m_N \in [0.25,3.29] GeV, respectively, we exclude regions on the parameter space (mN,VμN2m_N,|V_{\mu N}|^{2}) associated with the heavy neutrino, which could slightly improve the limits from Bπ+μμB^- \to \pi^+\mu^-\mu^- (LHCb).Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures.     Emergence of switch-like behavior in a large family of simple biochemical networks

    Bistability plays a central role in the gene regulatory networks (GRNs) controlling many essential biological functions, including cellular differentiation and cell cycle control. However, establishing the network topologies that can exhibit bistability remains a challenge, in part due to the exceedingly large variety of GRNs that exist for even a small number of components. We begin to address this problem by employing chemical reaction network theory in a comprehensive in silico survey to determine the capacity for bistability of more than 40,000 simple networks that can be formed by two transcription factor-coding genes and their associated proteins (assuming only the most elementary biochemical processes). We find that there exist reaction rate constants leading to bistability in ~90% of these GRN models, including several circuits that do not contain any of the TF cooperativity commonly associated with bistable systems, and the majority of which could only be identified as bistable through an original subnetwork-based analysis. A topological sorting of the two-gene family of networks based on the presence or absence of biochemical reactions reveals eleven minimal bistable networks (i.e., bistable networks that do not contain within them a smaller bistable subnetwork). The large number of previously unknown bistable network topologies suggests that the capacity for switch-like behavior in GRNs arises with relative ease and is not easily lost through network evolution. To highlight the relevance of the systematic application of CRNT to bistable network identification in real biological systems, we integrated publicly available protein-protein interaction, protein-DNA interaction, and gene expression data from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and identified several GRNs predicted to behave in a bistable fashion.Comment: accepted to PLoS Computational Biolog

    Zirconium stable isotope analysis of zircon by MC-ICP-MS: Methods and application to evaluating intra-crystalline zonation in a zircon megacryst

    Zirconium (Zr) plays a key role in the development of phases like zircon (ZrSiO₄) and baddeleyite (ZrO₂) in magmatic systems. These minerals are crucial for the study of geologic time and crustal evolution, and their high resistivity to weathering and erosion results in their preservation on timescales of billions of years. Although zircon and baddeleyite may also preserve a robust record of Zr isotope behavior in high-temperature terrestrial environments, little is known about the factors that control Zr isotope partitioning in magmatic systems, the petrogenetic significance of fractionated compositions, or how these variations are recorded in Zr-rich accessory phases. Here, we describe a new analytical protocol for accurately determining the Zr stable isotope composition of zircon by multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS), using the double-spike method to correct for procedural and instrumental mass bias. We apply this technique to test whether zircon crystallization in carbonatite magmatic systems is a driver of Zr isotope fractionation by interrogating the internal zonation of a zircon megacryst from the Mud Tank carbonatite (MTUR1). We find the MTUR1 megacryst to lack internal zoning within analytical uncertainties with a mean μ⁹⁴/⁹⁰Zr_(NIST) = −55 ± 28 ppm (2 SD, n = 151), which suggests that zircon crystallization is not a driver of Zr isotope fractionation in carbonatite magmas. This observation is in stark contrast with those made in silicate magmatic systems, raising the possibility that the bonding environment of Zr⁴⁺ ions may be fundamentally different in carbonatite vs. silicate melts. Because of its remarkable homogeneity, the MTUR1 megacryst is an ideal natural reference material for Zr isotopic analysis of zircon using both solution and spatially resolved methods. The reproducibility of a pure Zr solution and our chemically purified zircon fractions indicate that the external reproducibility of our method is on the order of ±28 ppm for μ⁹⁴/⁹⁰Zr, or ±7 ppm per amu, at 95% confidence

    Plio-Pleistocene time-averaged field in southern Patagonia recorded in lava flows

    Paleomagnetic directions were obtained from stepwise alternating-field or thermal demagnetization of 53 lava flows from southern Patagonia (latitudes 49.5°-52.1 °S) that include the Pali-Aike volcanic field and the Meseta Viscachas plateau lavas. In addition to previous Miocene-late Quaternary ages of these flows, 40Ar/39Ar dates spanning from 0.1 to 15.4 Ma were obtained for 17 of the sites. All except one of the magnetic polarities coincide with the expected polarities of the magnetic polarity timescale [Cande and Kent, 1995] for the obtained 40Ar/39Ar ages. The mean direction from 33 sites (eliminating sites <4 Ma) that pass a selection criteria of α95 ≤5° is Dec = 358.7°,Inc = - 68.2°, α95 = 3.5°, a value that coincides within the statistical uncertainty with the direction of the geocentric axial dipole for that area (Inc = - 68.1°). Likewise, the mean virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) coincides within the statistical uncertainty with the geographic North Pole. The secular variation described by the VGP angular standard deviation for these sites is 17.1°, a value expected for that latitude according to Model G of paleosecular variation [McFadden et al., 1988]. The characteristics of the data presented are optimum for time-averaged field (TAF) studies because of the good age control and good quality of the paleomagnetic data: (1) primary components of magnetization were obtained using principal component analysis [Kirschvink, 1980] from at least five points and maximum angular deviation ≤5°, (2) site means were calculated with Fisher statistics using at least three samples, and (c) 38 of the 53 flows had α95 ≤ 5°.     Commissioning and performance results of the WFIRST/PISCES integral field spectrograph

    The Prototype Imaging Spectrograph for Coronagraphic Exoplanet Studies (PISCES) is a high contrast integral field spectrograph (IFS) whose design was driven by WFIRST coronagraph instrument requirements. We present commissioning and operational results using PISCES as a camera on the High Contrast Imaging Testbed at JPL.
