Interacción entre pares: terreno de aprendizaje matemático y de ‘empatía matemática’

    Get PDF

Geometric analysis of noisy perturbations to nonholonomic constraints

We propose two types of stochastic extensions of nonholonomic constraints for mechanical systems. Our approach relies on a stochastic extension of the Lagrange-d'Alembert framework. We consider in details the case of invariant nonholonomic systems on the group of rotations and on the special Euclidean group. Based on this, we then develop two types of stochastic deformations of the Suslov problem and study the possibility of extending to the stochastic case the preservation of some of its integrals of motion such as the Kharlamova or Clebsch-Tisserand integrals

Drug delivery and controlled release from biocompatible metal-organic frameworks using mechanical amorphization

We have used a family of Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different functionalized (bromo, nitro and amino) and extended linkers for drug delivery. We loaded the materials with the fluorescent model molecule calcein and the anticancer drug α-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (α-CHC), and consequently performed a mechanical amorphization process to attempt to control the delivery of guest molecules. Our analysis revealed that the loading values of both molecules were higher for the MOFs containing unfunctionalized linkers. Confocal microscopy showed that all the materials were able to penetrate into cells, and the therapeutic effect of α-CHC on HeLa cells was enhanced when loaded (20 wt%) into the MOF with the longest linker. On one hand, calcein release required up to 3 days from the crystalline form for all the materials. On the other hand, the amorphous counterparts containing the bromo and nitro functional groups released only a fraction of the total loaded amount, and in the case of the amino-MOF a slow and progressive release was successfully achieved for 15 days. In the case of the materials loaded with α-CHC, no difference was observed between the crystalline and amorphous form of the materials. These results highlight the necessity of a balance between the pore size of the materials and the size of the guest molecules to accomplish a successful and efficient sustained release using this mechanical ball-milling process. Additionally, the endocytic pathway used by cells to internalize these MOFs may lead to diverse final cellular locations and consequently, different therapeutic effects. Understanding these cellular mechanisms will drive the design of more effective MOFs for drug delivery applications.C.A.O. thanks Becas Chile and the Cambridge Trust for funding. A Far-UV Variability Survey of the Globular Cluster M80

We have searched for variable sources in the core region of M80, using far ultra-violet data taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope. We found three sources that exhibit strong signs of variability in our data. Among these is source TDK1, which we believe to be an RR Lyrae star that reached maximum brightness during our observations. The light curve shows a >3 mag FUV brightening over the course of ~5 hours, with an estimated peak brightness of ~16.7 mag, followed by a decrease to ~20 mag. Archival optical data obtained with WFPC2 confirm that TDK1 is variable in all wavebands. TDK1's SED is reasonably fit by a star with temperature T(eff)=6700K and radius R=4.2R(sun), consistent with the suggestion that it is an RR Lyrae. Based on the photometric and variability characteristics of the other two variables, we suggest that TDK2 is likely to be an SX Phoenicis star with ~55 minutes period, and TDK3 is likely another RR Lyrae. Finally, we briefly discuss the FUV counterparts to two previously known variables in M80, the classical nova T Sco and the dwarf nova DN1.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures and 3 tables. Inhomogeneity correction of magnetic resonance images by minimization of intensity overlapping

Proceeding of: IEEE 2003 International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), Barcelona, Spain, 14-17 Sept. 2003This work presents a new algorithm (NIC; Non uniform Intensity Correclion) for the correction of intensity inhomogeneities in magnetic resonance images. The algorithm has been validated by means of realistic phantom images and a set of 24 real images. Evaluation using previously proposed phantom images for inhomogeneity correction algorithms allowed us to obtain results fully comparable to the previous literature on the topic. This new algorithm was also compared, using a real image dataset, to other widely used methods which are freely available in the Internet (N3, SPM'99 and SPM2). Standard quality criteria have been used for determining the goodness of the different methods. The new algorithm showed better results removing the intensity inhomogeneities and did not produce degradation when used on images free from this artifact
