Characterization of Metal Matrix Composites
Experimental methods were developed, adapted, and applied to the characterization of a metal matrix composite system, namely, silicon carbide/aluminim (SCS-2/6061 Al), and its constituents. The silicon carbide fiber was characterized by determining its modulus, strength, and coefficient of thermal expansion. The aluminum matrix was characterized thermomechanically up to 399 C (750 F) at two strain rates. The unidirectional SiC/Al composite was characterized mechanically under longitudinal, transverse, and in-plane shear loading up to 399 C (750 F). Isothermal and non-isothermal creep behavior was also measured. The applicability of a proposed set of multifactor thermoviscoplastic nonlinear constitutive relations and a computer code was investigated. Agreement between predictions and experimental results was shown in a few cases. The elastoplastic thermomechanical behavior of the composite was also described by a number of new analytical models developed or adapted for the material system studied. These models include the rule of mixtures, composite cylinder model with various thermoelastoplastic analyses and a model based on average field theory. In most cases satisfactory agreement was demonstrated between analytical predictions and experimental results for the cases of stress-strain behavior and thermal deformation behavior at different temperatures. In addition, some models yielded detailed three-dimensional stress distributions in the constituents within the composite
High efficiency supercontinuum generation using ultra-long Raman fiber cavities
Supercontinuum generation in a multi-fiber ultra-long Raman fiber laser cavity is experimentally investigated for the first time. We demonstrate significantly enhanced spectral flatness and supercontinuum generation efficiency using only conventional single mode silica fiber. With a pump power of only 1.63W a ~15dB bandwidth >260 nm wide (from 1440 to >1700nm) supercontinuum source is reported with a flatness of <1dB over 180nm using an optimised hybrid TW/HNLF cavity. We address the dependence of the supercontinuum spectrum on the input pump power and ultra-long Raman cavity
Turbulent broadening of optical spectra in ultralong Raman fiber lasers
We study the properties of radiation generated in ultralong fiber lasers and find an interesting link between these optical systems and the theory of weak wave turbulence. Experimental observations strongly suggest that turbulentlike weak interactions between the multitude of laser cavity modes are responsible for practical characteristics of ultralong fiber lasers such as spectra of the output radiation
Long-distance soliton transmission through ultralong fiber lasers
We present the first experimental demonstration (to our knowledge) of long-distance unperturbed fundamental optical soliton transmission in conventional single-mode optical fiber. The virtual transparency in the fiber required for soliton transmission, over 15 complete periods, was achieved by using an ultralong Raman fiber laser amplification scheme. Optical soliton pulse duration, pulse bandwidth, and peak intensity are shown to remain constant along the transmission length. Frequency-resolved optical gating spectrograms and numerical simulations confirm the observed optical soliton dynamics
Simultaneous spatial and spectral transparency in ultralong fiber lasers
We demonstrate that ultralong Raman lasers can be used to generate a transmission medium with simultaneous transparency over the spatial and the spectral domains. Numerical calculations show this cross-domain transparency to be preserved when the medium is used for transmitting high-intensity signals, which makes ultralong lasers an ideal experimental test bed for the study of multifrequency nonlinear interactions in optical fiber waveguides. Full spatiospectral transparency is experimentally obtained over a 20 nm x 20 km window
Characterization of ultra-long Raman fibre lasers
We present results on characterization of lasers with ultra-long cavity lengths up to 84km, the longest cavity ever reported. We have analyzed the mode structure, shape and width of the generated spectra, intensity fluctuations depending on length and intra-cavity power. The RF spectra exhibit an ultra-dense cavity mode structure (mode spacing is 1.2kHz for 84km), in which the width of the mode beating is proportional to the intra-cavity power while the optical spectra broaden with power according to the square-root law acquiring a specific shape with exponential wings. A model based on wave turbulence formalism has been developed to describe the observed effects
Experimental demonstration of mode structure in ultralong Raman fiber lasers
We present the first experimental demonstration of a resolvable mode structure with spacing c/2nL in the RF spectra of ultralong Raman fiber lasers. The longest ever demonstrated laser cavity (L=84km), RF peaks of ∼100 Hz width and spacing ∼1 kHz have been observed at low intracavity powers. The width of the peaks increases linearly with growing intracavity power and is almost independent of fiber length. © 2007 Optical Society of America
Demonstration of Universal Parametric Entangling Gates on a Multi-Qubit Lattice
We show that parametric coupling techniques can be used to generate selective
entangling interactions for multi-qubit processors. By inducing coherent
population exchange between adjacent qubits under frequency modulation, we
implement a universal gateset for a linear array of four superconducting
qubits. An average process fidelity of is estimated for
three two-qubit gates via quantum process tomography. We establish the
suitability of these techniques for computation by preparing a four-qubit
maximally entangled state and comparing the estimated state fidelity against
the expected performance of the individual entangling gates. In addition, we
prepare an eight-qubit register in all possible bitstring permutations and
monitor the fidelity of a two-qubit gate across one pair of these qubits.
Across all such permutations, an average fidelity of
is observed. These results thus offer a path to a scalable architecture with
high selectivity and low crosstalk
270-km ultralong raman fiber laser
We analyze the physical mechanisms limiting optical fiber resonator length and report on the longest ever laser cavity, reaching 270 km, which shows a clearly resolvable mode structure with a width of ~120??Hz and peak separation of ~380Hz in the radio-frequency spectrum
