Thermodynamic curvature measures interactions
Thermodynamic fluctuation theory originated with Einstein who inverted the
relation to express the number of states in terms of entropy:
. The theory's Gaussian approximation is discussed in most
statistical mechanics texts. I review work showing how to go beyond the
Gaussian approximation by adding covariance, conservation, and consistency.
This generalization leads to a fundamentally new object: the thermodynamic
Riemannian curvature scalar , a thermodynamic invariant. I argue that
is related to the correlation length and suggest that the sign of
corresponds to whether the interparticle interactions are effectively

Blue reflectance in tarantulas is evolutionarily conserved despite nanostructural diversity
Slight shifts in arrangement within biological photonic nanostructures can produce large color differences, and sexual selection often leads to high color diversity in clades with structural colors. We use phylogenetic reconstruction, electron microscopy, spectrophotometry, and opticalmodeling to showan opposing pattern of nanostructural diversification accompanied by unusual conservation of blue color in tarantulas (Araneae: Theraphosidae). In contrast to other clades, blue coloration in phylogenetically distant tarantulas peaks within a narrow 20-nm region around 450 nm. Both quasi-ordered and multilayer nanostructures found in different tarantulas produce this blue color. Thus, even within monophyletic lineages, tarantulas have evolved strikingly similar blue coloration through divergent mechanisms. The poor color perception and lack of conspicuous display during courtship of tarantulas argue that these colors are not sexually selected. Therefore, our data contrast with sexual selection that typically produces a diverse array of colors with a single structuralmechanismby showing that natural selection on structural color in tarantulas resulted in convergence on similar color through diverse structural mechanisms
On V_ud determination from kaon decays
The pion beta decay pi^+ -> pi^0 e^+ nu proceeds through pure weak vector
hadronic currents and, therefore, the theoretical prediction for it is more
reliable than for the processes with axial-vector current contribution. For
example, recently the pion beta decay has been used for V_ud determination. The
main aim of this letter is to point that kaon beta decay K^0 -> K^+(pi^+ pi^0)

The development of a program analysis environment for Ada
A unit level, Ada software module testing system, called Query Utility Environment for Software Testing of Ada (QUEST/Ada), is described. The project calls for the design and development of a prototype system. QUEST/Ada design began with a definition of the overall system structure and a description of component dependencies. The project team was divided into three groups to resolve the preliminary designs of the parser/scanner: the test data generator, and the test coverage analyzer. The Phase 1 report is a working document from which the system documentation will evolve. It provides history, a guide to report sections, a literature review, the definition of the system structure and high level interfaces, descriptions of the prototype scope, the three major components, and the plan for the remainder of the project. The appendices include specifications, statistics, two papers derived from the current research, a preliminary users' manual, and the proposal and work plan for Phase 2
Embedding initial data for black hole collisions
We discuss isometric embedding diagrams for the visualization of initial data
for the problem of the head-on collision of two black holes. The problem of
constructing the embedding diagrams is explicitly presented for the best
studied initial data, the Misner geometry. We present a partial solution of the

Inconsistency of QED in the Presence of Dirac Monopoles
A precise formulation of local gauge invariance in QED is presented,
which clearly shows that the gauge coupling associated with the unphysical
longitudinal photon field is non-observable and actually has an arbitrary
value. We then re-examine the Dirac quantization condition and find that its
derivation involves solely the unphysical longitudinal coupling. Hence an
inconsistency inevitably arises in the presence of Dirac monopoles and this can
be considered as a theoretical evidence against their existence. An

Energy loss of fast quarks in nuclei
We report an analysis of the nuclear dependence of the yield of Drell-Yan
dimuons from the 800 GeV/c proton bombardment of , C, Ca, Fe, and W
targets. Employing a new formulation of the Drell-Yan process in the rest frame
of the nucleus, this analysis examines the effect of initial-state energy loss
and shadowing on the nuclear-dependence ratios versus the incident proton's
momentum fraction and dimuon effective mass. The resulting energy loss per unit
path length is GeV/fm. This is the first
observation of a nonzero energy loss of partons traveling in nuclear

Search for the Rare Decay K_{L}\to\pi^{0}\pi^{0}\gamma
The KTeV E799 experiment has conducted a search for the rare decay
via the topology
(where ). Due to Bose
statistics of the pair and the real nature of the photon, the
decay is restricted to proceed at lowest order
by the CP conserving direct emission (DE) of an E2 electric quadrupole photon.
The rate of this decay is interesting theoretically since chiral perturbation
theory predicts that this process vanishes at level . Therefore, this
mode probes chiral perturbation theory at . In this paper we report a
determination of an upper limit of (90% CL) for
. This is approximately a factor of 20 lower than

Cosmological Constraints on Lorentz Violation in Electrodynamics
Infrared, optical, and ultraviolet spectropolarimetry of cosmological sources
is used to constrain the pure electromagnetic sector of a general
