Theoretical analysis of the electronic structure of the stable and metastable c(2x2) phases of Na on Al(001): Comparison with angle-resolved ultra-violet photoemission spectra
Using Kohn-Sham wave functions and their energy levels obtained by
density-functional-theory total-energy calculations, the electronic structure
of the two c(2x2) phases of Na on Al(001) are analysed; namely, the metastable
hollow-site structure formed when adsorption takes place at low temperature,
and the stable substitutional structure appearing when the substrate is heated
thereafter above ca. 180K or when adsorption takes place at room temperature
from the beginning. The experimentally obtained two-dimensional band structures
of the surface states or resonances are well reproduced by the calculations.
With the help of charge density maps it is found that in both phases, two
pronounced bands appear as the result of a characteristic coupling between the
valence-state band of a free c(2x2)-Na monolayer and the
surface-state/resonance band of the Al surfaces; that is, the clean (001)
surface for the metastable phase and the unstable, reconstructed "vacancy"
structure for the stable phase. The higher-lying band, being Na-derived,
remains metallic for the unstable phase, whereas it lies completely above the
Fermi level for the stable phase, leading to the formation of a
surface-state/resonance band-structure resembling the bulk band-structure of an
ionic crystal.Comment: 11 pages, 11 postscript figures, published in Phys. Rev. B 57, 15251

Quantum and classical descriptions of a measuring apparatus
A measuring apparatus is described by quantum mechanics while it interacts
with the quantum system under observation, and then it must be given a
classical description so that the result of the measurement appears as
objective reality. Alternatively, the apparatus may always be treated by
quantum mechanics, and be measured by a second apparatus which has such a dual
description. This article examines whether these two different descriptions are
mutually consistent. It is shown that if the dynamical variable used in the
first apparatus is represented by an operator of the Weyl-Wigner type (for
example, if it is a linear coordinate), then the conversion from quantum to
classical terminology does not affect the final result. However, if the first
apparatus encodes the measurement in a different type of operator (e.g., the
phase operator), the two methods of calculation may give different results.Comment: 18 pages LaTeX (including one encapsulated PostScript figure
Coisotropic deformations of algebraic varieties and integrable systems
Coisotropic deformations of algebraic varieties are defined as those for
which an ideal of the deformed variety is a Poisson ideal. It is shown that
coisotropic deformations of sets of intersection points of plane quadrics,
cubics and space algebraic curves are governed, in particular, by the dKP,
WDVV, dVN, d2DTL equations and other integrable hydrodynamical type systems.
Particular attention is paid to the study of two- and three-dimensional
deformations of elliptic curves. Problem of an appropriate choice of Poisson
structure is discussed.Comment: 17 pages, no figure
Classical Fields Near Thermal Equilibrium
We discuss the classical limit for the long-distance (``soft'') modes of a
quantum field when the hard modes of the field are in thermal equilibrium. We
address the question of the correct semiclassical dynamics when a momentum
cut-off is introduced. Higher order contributions leads to a stochastic
interpretation for the effective action in analogy to Quantum Brownian Motion,
resulting in dissipation and decoherence for the evolution of the soft modes.
Particular emphasis is put on the understanding of dissipation. Our discussion
focuses mostly on scalar fields, but we make some remarks on the extension to
gauge theories.Comment: REVTeX, 6 figure
Topological structures of adiabatic phase for multi-level quantum systems
The topological properties of adiabatic gauge fields for multi-level
(three-level in particular) quantum systems are studied in detail. Similar to
the result that the adiabatic gauge field for SU(2) systems (e.g. two-level
quantum system or angular momentum systems, etc) have a monopole structure, the
curvature two-forms of the adiabatic holonomies for SU(3) three-level and SU(3)
eight-level quantum systems are shown to have monopole-like (for all levels) or
instanton-like (for the degenerate levels) structures.Comment: 15 pages, no figures. Accepted by J.Phys.
Special Functions Related to Dedekind Type DC-Sums and their Applications
In this paper we construct trigonometric functions of the sum T_{p}(h,k),
which is called Dedekind type DC-(Dahee and Changhee) sums. We establish
analytic properties of this sum. We find trigonometric representations of this
sum. We prove reciprocity theorem of this sums. Furthermore, we obtain
relations between the Clausen functions, Polylogarithm function, Hurwitz zeta
function, generalized Lambert series (G-series), Hardy-Berndt sums and the sum
T_{p}(h,k). We also give some applications related to these sums and functions
A Possible Detection of Occultation by a Proto-planetary Clump in GM Cephei
GM Cep in the young (~4 Myr) open cluster Trumpler 37 has been known to be an
abrupt variable and to have a circumstellar disk with very active accretion.
Our monitoring observations in 2009-2011 revealed the star to show sporadic
flare events, each with brightening of < 0.5 mag lasting for days. These
brightening events, associated with a color change toward the blue, should
originate from an increased accretion activity. Moreover, the star also
underwent a brightness drop of ~1 mag lasting for about a month, during which
the star became bluer when fainter. Such brightness drops seem to have a
recurrence time scale of a year, as evidenced in our data and the photometric
behavior of GM Cep over a century. Between consecutive drops, the star
brightened gradually by about 1 mag and became blue at peak luminosity. We
propose that the drop is caused by obscuration of the central star by an
orbiting dust concentration. The UX Orionis type of activity in GM Cep
therefore exemplifies the disk inhomogeneity process in transition between
grain coagulation and planetesimal formation in a young circumstellar disk.Comment: In submission to the Astrophysical Journal, 4 figure
Measurements of Transverse Energy Flow in Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA
Measurements of transverse energy flow are presented for neutral current
deep-inelastic scattering events produced in positron-proton collisions at
HERA. The kinematic range covers squared momentum transfers Q^2 from 3.2 to
2,200 GeV^2, the Bjorken scaling variable x from 8.10^{-5} to 0.11 and the
hadronic mass W from 66 to 233 GeV. The transverse energy flow is measured in
the hadronic centre of mass frame and is studied as a function of Q^2, x, W and
pseudorapidity. A comparison is made with QCD based models. The behaviour of
the mean transverse energy in the central pseudorapidity region and an interval
corresponding to the photon fragmentation region are analysed as a function of
Q^2 and W.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys.
