Mortars and screeds containing polymeric aggregates recycled from industrial waste and tyres

    Get PDF
Given the growing market demand for products containing recycled components dictated by European and national policies, the presented research aimed to replace part of the natural aggregates in construction mortars and screeds with recycled polymeric aggregates (RA): industrial technopolymers and ground tyre rubber (GTR). The strategy involved the substitution of aggregates, both in market products and in the design of standard mortars, first verifying the CE certification and then the achievable mechanical performance. The whole process has been discussed in the context of a circular approach, extended to the analysis of the aggregate production phase, highlighting factors that influence environmental and economic impacts

Alignment of the ISAC-II Medium Beta Cryomodule with a Wire Monitoring System

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a system that has been designed to monitor changes in the alignment of the cavities and solenoids during pump out and cool down. TRIUMF is developing ISAC-II, a superconducting (SC) linac. It will comprise 9 cryomodules with a total of 48 niobium cavities and 12 SC solenoids. They must remain aligned at liquid He temperatures: cavities to ±400 μm and solenoids to ±200 μm after a vertical contraction of ∼4 mm. A wire position monitor (WPM) system based on a TESLA design measures the signals induced in stripline pickups by a 215 MHz signal carded by a position reference wire. The sensors, one per cavity and two per solenoid, monitor their motion during pre-alignment, pumping, and cool down. System accuracy is ∼7 μm. The device is giving a wealth of information over and above the data collected with the installed optical targets. The use of optical targets involves personnel and the readings can be taken only periodically. Conversely the WPM data is monitored continuously providing detailed data that is extremely valuable to help characterize a new structure

ABSTRACT Landslides can cause major economic damage and a large number of casualties as it is possible to see from past events occurred all over the world. Being able to predict these kind of hazards would then suppose the achievement of great benefits. Here a model that combines a depth integrated description of the soil-pore fluid mixture together with a set of 1D models dealing with pore pressure evolution within the soil mass is presented. In this way, pore pressure changes caused by vertical consolidation, changes of total stresses resulting from height variations and changes of basal surface permeability can be taken into account with more precision. The mathematical model is based on the Biot-Zienkiewicz equations, from where a depth averaged model is derived. Concerning the material behaviour, the approach used is the one suggested by the Perzyna viscoplasticity, which has been extensively used in the past to model solid behaviour prior to failure. Three different yield criterion are considered in the framework of Perzyna's model: a Von Mises, a Mohr Coulomb and a Cam Clay yield criterion. The obtained results lead to a good agreement with the results achieved using classical rheological models. Then, a simple shear rheological model is derived, providing the basal friction needed in depth integrated models. The Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) has been the numerical technique chosen to spatially discretised the depth integrated equations of the mathematical model. The SPH technique has been enriched by adding a 1D finite differences grid associated at each SPH node in order to improve the description of pore water profiles in the avalanching soil. The purpose of this work is to apply the SPH depth integrated numerical model, together with the sub-model that predicts the evolution of the pore water pressure inside the landslide, to simulate the propagation phase of the Aberfan flowslide occurred in 1966. Pathway-specific effects of ADSL deficiency on neurodevelopment

    Get PDF
Adenylosuccinate lyase (ADSL) functions in de novo purine synthesis (DNPS) and the purine nucleotide cycle. ADSL deficiency (ADSLD) causes numerous neurodevelopmental pathologies, including microcephaly and autism spectrum disorder. ADSLD patients have normal serum purine nucleotide levels but exhibit accumulation of dephosphorylated ADSL substrates, S-Ado, and SAICAr, the latter being implicated in neurotoxic effects through unknown mechanisms. We examined the phenotypic effects of ADSL depletion in human cells and their relation to phenotypic outcomes. Using specific interventions to compensate for reduced purine levels or modulate SAICAr accumulation, we found that diminished AMP levels resulted in increased DNA damage signaling and cell cycle delays, while primary ciliogenesis was impaired specifically by loss of ADSL or administration of SAICAr. ADSL-deficient chicken and zebrafish embryos displayed impaired neurogenesis and microcephaly. Neuroprogenitor attrition in zebrafish embryos was rescued by pharmacological inhibition of DNPS, but not increased nucleotide concentration. Zebrafish also displayed phenotypes commonly linked to ciliopathies. Our results suggest that both reduced purine levels and impaired DNPS contribute to neurodevelopmental pathology in ADSLD and that defective ciliogenesis may influence the ADSLD phenotypic spectrum.ID was funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement no. 754510, THS, JL, and SP were funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MCIU; PGC2018-095616-B-I00 to THS, PGC2018-099562-B-I00 to JL, and BFU2017-83562-P to SP), the 2017 SGR 1089 (AGAUR), FEDER, the Centres of Excellence Severo Ochoa award, and the CERCA Programme. Análisis de requerimientos y determinación preliminar de la potencia de actuación para el TVC de un vehículo lanzador con tobera flexible

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
Understanding the phase separation mechanism of solid-state binary compounds induced by laser-material interaction is a challenge because of the complexity of the compound materials and short processing times. Here we present xenon chloride excimer laser-induced melt-mediated phase separation and surface reconstruction of single-crystal silicon carbide and study this process by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and a time-resolved reflectance method. A single-pulse laser irradiation triggers melting of the silicon carbide surface, resulting in a phase separation into a disordered carbon layer with partially graphitic domains (???2.5 nm) and polycrystalline silicon (???5 nm). Additional pulse irradiations cause sublimation of only the separated silicon element and subsequent transformation of the disordered carbon layer into multilayer graphene. The results demonstrate viability of synthesizing ultra-thin nanomaterials by the decomposition of a binary system.open
