    Get PDF
Knitted reinforced single polymer laminate composites based on polyamide 6 (KSPCsPA6) were produced bycompression molding of polyamide 6 microparticlesMPs()PA6powder-coating annealed PA6 Rib or Jersey knittedtextile structures. TheMPsPA6were synthesized by solution/precipitation activated anionic ring-opening poly-merization ofΔ-caprolactam. The tensile properties ofKSPCsPA6were studied in relation to the knitted re-inforcement architecture, fiber volume fraction, ply orientation and stacking orders. The tensile stiffness andstrength of the newly preparedKSPCsPA6withfiber content of 15% showed significant improvements as com-pared to the neat anionic PA6 matrix and to commercial hydrolytic PA6 (HPA6). The mechanical behavior of theKSPCsPA6was correlated with the geometry parameters of the knitted reinforcements, the polymorph content ofthe samples and their crystallinity indexes determined by differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-raydiffraction. The fracture behavior of KSPCsPA6was investigated by electron microscopy complemented by si-mulation studies. All authors gratefully acknowledge the support of the project TSSiPRO-NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000015 funded by the regional operational program NORTE 2020, under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund. One-pot low temperature synthesis and characterization of hybrid poly(2-pyrrolidone) microparticles suitable for protein immobilization

    Get PDF
Neat and hybrid poly(2-pyrrolidone), i.e. polyamide 4 (PA4) microparticles containing magnetic or conductive metal, metal oxide, or carbon nanotube fillers were prepared via environmentally-friendly solventless activated ring-opening polymerization of 2-pyrrolidone at 40 C. The method produces high porosity microparticles with diameters of 5e12mm and conversion to PA4 of 56e65%. Their structure and properties were characterized by light- and electron microscopy, thermal, spectral and X-ray diffraction techniques. Two crystalline polymorphs, namelya andb PА4, were found to coexist at room temperature by X-ray diffraction. The assessment of the adsorption capacity of the PA4 hybrid microparticles toward model protein showed up to 60% efficiency only after 1 h of incubation without any preliminary activation or functionalization. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the project TSSiPRO NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000015, supported by the regional operation program NORTE2020, under the Portugal 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund, as well as funding from FCT – Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology within the strategic projects UID/CTM/50025/2013 and LA25/2013–2014. Full text link
We present the results of observational campaigns of asteroids performed at Asiago Station of Padova Astronomical Observatory and at M.G. Fracastoro Station of Catania Astrophysical Observatory, as part of the large research programme on Solar System minor bodies undertaken since 1979 at the Physics and Astronomy Department of Catania University. Photometric observations of six Main-Belt asteroids (27 Euterpe, 173 Ino, 182 Elsa, 539 Pamina, 849 Ara, and 984 Gretia), one Hungaria (1727 Mette), and two Near-Earth Objects (3199 Nefertiti and 2004 UE) are reported. The first determination of the synodic rotational period of 2004 UE was obtained. For 182 Elsa and 1727 Mette the derived synodic period of 80.23+/-0.08 h and 2.981+/-0.001 h, respectively, represents a significant improvement on the previously published values. For 182 Elsa the first determination of the H-G magnitude relation is also presented.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Planetary and Space Scienc

Physical properties of ESA Rosetta target asteroid (21) Lutetia: Shape and flyby geometry

Aims. We determine the physical properties (spin state and shape) of asteroid (21) Lutetia, target of the ESA Rosetta mission, to help in preparing for observations during the flyby on 2010 July 10 by predicting the orientation of Lutetia as seen from Rosetta. Methods. We use our novel KOALA inversion algorithm to determine the physical properties of asteroids from a combination of optical lightcurves, disk-resolved images, and stellar occultations, although the latter are not available for (21) Lutetia. Results. We find the spin axis of (21) Lutetia to lie within 5 degrees of ({\lambda} = 52 deg., {\beta} = -6 deg.) in Ecliptic J2000 reference frame (equatorial {\alpha} = 52 deg., {\delta} = +12 deg.), and determine an improved sidereal period of 8.168 270 \pm 0.000 001 h. This pole solution implies the southern hemisphere of Lutetia will be in "seasonal" shadow at the time of the flyby. The apparent cross-section of Lutetia is triangular as seen "pole-on" and more rectangular as seen "equator-on". The best-fit model suggests the presence of several concavities. The largest of these is close to the north pole and may be associated with large impacts.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysic

Bovine serum albumin-imprinted magnetic poly(2-pyrrolidone) microparticles for protein recognition

    Get PDF
This study reports on the synthesis and adsorption properties of molecularly imprinted porous magnetic microparticles (MIP) based on the biodegradable and sustainable poly(2-pyrrolidone) (PPD or PA4). These new PPD MIP materials were obtained via activated anionic ring-opening polymerization of 2-pyrroldone carried out at 40 °C, in the presence of iron fillers and bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a template. Neither solvent, nor additional crosslinking or porogen agents were used in the PPD MIP synthesis. Analogously, PPD particles without BSA imprinting (NIP) were also produced. Depending on the microparticles composition, their yields were in the 55–70 wt% range, the average size varying between 8 and 25 ÎŒm. After characterization of the surface topography of all samples, their adsorption capacity toward the BSA target was assessed as a function of the adsorption time, protein concentration and pH of the medium. All three PPD MIP samples displayed adsorption capacity toward BSA being up to one order of magnitude higher as compared to other BSA-imprinted polymer systems. It was found that the rebinding of BSA on MIP is best described by the Langmuir isotherm, whereas for rebinding on NIP the Freundlich isotherm was the more adequate model. On this basis, the nature of the adsorption on MIP and NIP was discussed. The adsorption toward two other proteins, namely Ovalbumin and Cytochrome C was also tested. The newly synthesized BSA-imprinted PPD MIP displayed selective adsorption for the BSA target being dependent on the pH values of the medium. The easy recovery of the Fe-containing MIP and the capacity of all MIP samples for multiple sorption/desorption cycles was demonstrated. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the project TSSiPRO NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000015, supported by the regional operation program NORTE2020, under the Portugal 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund, as well as the support by National Funds through Fundação para a CiĂȘncia e Tecnologia (FCT), project UID/CTM/50025/2019. Lipoprotein‐Associated Phospholipase A2 Activity Is a Marker of Risk But Not a Useful Target for Treatment in Patients With Stable Coronary Heart Disease

    Get PDF
Background: We evaluated lipoprotein‐associated phospholipase A2 (Lp‐PLA2) activity in patients with stable coronary heart disease before and during treatment with darapladib, a selective Lp‐PLA2 inhibitor, in relation to outcomes and the effects of darapladib in the STABILITY trial. Methods and Results: Plasma Lp‐PLA2 activity was determined at baseline (n=14 500); at 1 month (n=13 709); serially (n=100) at 3, 6, and 18 months; and at the end of treatment. Adjusted Cox regression models evaluated associations between Lp‐PLA2 activity levels and outcomes. At baseline, the median Lp‐PLA2 level was 172.4 ÎŒmol/min per liter (interquartile range 143.1–204.2 ÎŒmol/min per liter). Comparing the highest and lowest Lp‐PLA2 quartile groups, the hazard ratios were 1.50 (95% CI 1.23–1.82) for the primary composite end point (cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke), 1.95 (95% CI 1.29–2.93) for hospitalization for heart failure, 1.42 (1.07–1.89) for cardiovascular death, and 1.37 (1.03–1.81) for myocardial infarction after adjustment for baseline characteristics, standard laboratory variables, and other prognostic biomarkers. Treatment with darapladib led to a ≈65% persistent reduction in median Lp‐PLA2 activity. There were no associations between on‐treatment Lp‐PLA2 activity or changes of Lp‐PLA2 activity and outcomes, and there were no significant interactions between baseline and on‐treatment Lp‐PLA2 activity or changes in Lp‐PLA2 activity levels and the effects of darapladib on outcomes. Conclusions: Although high Lp‐PLA2 activity was associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events, pharmacological lowering of Lp‐PLA2 activity by ≈65% did not significantly reduce cardiovascular events in patients with stable coronary heart disease, regardless of the baseline level or the magnitude of change of Lp‐PLA2 activity
