The Spectral Signature of Dust Scattering and Polarization in the Near IR to Far UV. I. Optical Depth and Geometry Effects
Spectropolarimetry from the near IR to the far UV of light scattered by dust
provides a valuable diagnostic of the dust composition, grain size distribution
and spatial distribution. To facilitate the use of this diagnostic, we present
detailed calculations of the intensity and polarization spectral signature of
light scattered by optically thin and optically thick dust in various
geometries. The polarized light radiative transfer calculations are carried out
using the adding-doubling method for a plane-parallel slab, and are extended to
an optically thick sphere by integrating over its surface. The calculations are
for the Mathis, Rumple & Nordsieck Galactic dust model, and cover the range
from 1 to 500 \AA. We find that the wavelength dependence of the
scattered light intensity provides a sensitive probe of the optical depth of
the scattering medium, while the polarization wavelength dependence provides a
probe of the grain scattering properties, which is practically independent of
optical depth. We provide a detailed set of predictions, including polarization
maps, which can be used to probe the properties of dust through imaging
spectropolarimetry in the near IR to far UV of various Galactic and
extragalactic objects. In a following paper we use the codes developed here to
provide predictions for the dependence of the intensity and polarization on

Mass-loss rates of Very Massive Stars
We discuss the basic physics of hot-star winds and we provide mass-loss rates
for (very) massive stars. Whilst the emphasis is on theoretical concepts and
line-force modelling, we also discuss the current state of observations and

Open Issues on the Synthesis of Evolved Stellar Populations at Ultraviolet Wavelengths
In this paper we briefly review three topics that have motivated our (and
others') investigations in recent years within the context of evolutionary
population synthesis techniques. These are: The origin of the FUV up-turn in
elliptical galaxies, the age-metallicity degeneracy, and the study of the
mid-UV rest-frame spectra of distant red galaxies. We summarize some of our
results and present a very preliminary application of a UV grid of theoretical
spectra in the analysis of integrated properties of aged stellar populations.
At the end, we concisely suggest how these topics can be tackled once the World

An automated quasi-continuous capillary refill timing device
Capillary refill time (CRT) is a simple means of cardiovascular assessment which is widely used in clinical care. Currently, CRT is measured through manual assessment of the time taken for skin tone to return to normal colour following blanching of the skin surface. There is evidence to suggest that manually assessed CRT is subject to bias from ambient light conditions, a lack of standardisation of both blanching time and manually applied pressure, subjectiveness of return to normal colour, and variability in the manual assessment of time. We present a novel automated system for CRT measurement, incorporating three components: a non-invasive adhesive sensor incorporating a pneumatic actuator, a diffuse multi-wavelength reflectance measurement device, and a temperature sensor; a battery operated datalogger unit containing a self contained pneumatic supply; and PC based data analysis software for the extraction of refill time, patient skin surface temperature, and sensor signal quality.
Through standardisation of the test, it is hoped that some of the shortcomings of manual CRT can be overcome. In addition, an automated system will facilitate easier integration of CRT into electronic record keeping and clinical monitoring or scoring systems, as well as reducing demands on clinicians.
Summary analysis of volunteer (n = 30) automated CRT datasets are presented, from 15 healthy adults and 15 healthy children (aged from 5 to 15 years), as their arms were cooled from ambient temperature to 5°C. A more detailed analysis of two typical datasets is also presented, demonstrating that the response of automated CRT to cooling matches that of previously published studies
Gossip as a Burdened Virtue
Gossip is often serious business, not idle chitchat. Gossip allows those oppressed to privately name their oppressors as a warning to others. Of course, gossip can be in error. The speaker may be lying or merely have lacked sufficient evidence. Bias can also make those who hear the gossip more or less likely to believe the gossip. By examining the social functions of gossip and considering the differences in power dynamics in which gossip can occur, we contend that gossip may be not only permissible but virtuous, both as the only reasonable recourse available and as a means of resistance against oppression
Theory and Applications of X-ray Standing Waves in Real Crystals
Theoretical aspects of x-ray standing wave method for investigation of the
real structure of crystals are considered in this review paper. Starting from
the general approach of the secondary radiation yield from deformed crystals
this theory is applied to different concreat cases. Various models of deformed
crystals like: bicrystal model, multilayer model, crystals with extended
deformation field are considered in detailes. Peculiarities of x-ray standing
wave behavior in different scattering geometries (Bragg, Laue) are analysed in
detailes. New possibilities to solve the phase problem with x-ray standing wave
method are discussed in the review. General theoretical approaches are

Astronomical Distance Determination in the Space Age: Secondary Distance Indicators
The formal division of the distance indicators into primary and secondary leads to difficulties in description of methods which can actually be used in two ways: with, and without the support of the other methods for scaling. Thus instead of concentrating on the scaling requirement we concentrate on all methods of distance determination to extragalactic sources which are designated, at least formally, to use for individual sources. Among those, the Supernovae Ia is clearly the leader due to its enormous success in determination of the expansion rate of the Universe. However, new methods are rapidly developing, and there is also a progress in more traditional methods. We give a general overview of the methods but we mostly concentrate on the most recent developments in each field, and future expectations. © 2018, The Author(s)
Steel fibre reinforced concrete for elements failing in bending and in shear
Discrete steel fibres can increase significantly the bending and the shear resistance of concrete
structural elements when Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) is designed in such a way that fibre
reinforcing mechanisms are optimized. To assess the fibre reinforcement effectiveness in shallow structural
elements failing in bending and in shear, experimental and numerical research were performed. Uniaxial
compression and bending tests were executed to derive the constitutive laws of the developed SFRC. Using a
cross-section layered model and the material constitutive laws, the deformational behaviour of structural
elements failing in bending was predicted from the moment-curvature relationship of the representative cross
sections. To evaluate the influence of the percentage of fibres on the shear resistance of shallow structures, three
point bending tests with shallow beams were performed. The applicability of the formulation proposed by
RILEM TC 162-TDF for the prediction of the shear resistance of SFRC elements was evaluated. Inverse
analysis was adopted to determine indirectly the values of the fracture mode I parameters of the developed
SFRC. With these values, and using a softening diagram for modelling the crack shear softening behaviour, the
