Large current noise in nanoelectromechanical systems close to continuous mechanical instabilities
We investigate the current noise of nanoelectromechanical systems close to a
continuous mechanical instability. In the vicinity of the latter, the
vibrational frequency of the nanomechanical system vanishes, rendering the
system very sensitive to charge fluctuations and, hence, resulting in very
large (super-Poissonian) current noise. Specifically, we consider a suspended
single-electron transistor close to the Euler buckling instability. We show
that such a system exhibits an exponential enhancement of the current noise
when approaching the Euler instability which we explain in terms of telegraph
noise.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures; v2: minor changes, published versio
On the Hierarchy of Block Deterministic Languages
A regular language is -lookahead deterministic (resp. -block
deterministic) if it is specified by a -lookahead deterministic (resp.
-block deterministic) regular expression. These two subclasses of regular
languages have been respectively introduced by Han and Wood (-lookahead
determinism) and by Giammarresi et al. (-block determinism) as a possible
extension of one-unambiguous languages defined and characterized by
Br\"uggemann-Klein and Wood. In this paper, we study the hierarchy and the
inclusion links of these families. We first show that each -block
deterministic language is the alphabetic image of some one-unambiguous
language. Moreover, we show that the conversion from a minimal DFA of a
-block deterministic regular language to a -block deterministic automaton
not only requires state elimination, and that the proof given by Han and Wood
of a proper hierarchy in -block deterministic languages based on this result
is erroneous. Despite these results, we show by giving a parameterized family
that there is a proper hierarchy in -block deterministic regular languages.
We also prove that there is a proper hierarchy in -lookahead deterministic
regular languages by studying particular properties of unary regular
expressions. Finally, using our valid results, we confirm that the family of
-block deterministic regular languages is strictly included into the one of
-lookahead deterministic regular languages by showing that any -block
deterministic unary language is one-unambiguous
Coherent magnetization precession in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As induced by picosecond acoustic pulses
We show that the magnetization of a thin ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As layer can be
modulated by picosecond acoustic pulses. In this approach a picosecond strain
pulse injected into the structure induces a tilt of the magnetization vector M,
followed by the precession of M around its equilibrium orientation. This effect
can be understood in terms of changes in magneto-crystalline anisotropy induced
by the pulse. A model where only one anisotropy constant is affected by the
strain pulse provides a good description of the observed time-dependent
response.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
Deciphering the Intracellular Fate of Propionibacterium acnes in Macrophages
Propionibacterium acnes is a Gram-positive bacterium that colonizes various niches of the human body, particularly the sebaceous follicles of the skin. Over the last years a role of this common skin bacterium as an opportunistic pathogen has been explored. Persistence of P. acnes in host tissue has been associated with chronic inflammation and disease development, for example, in prostate pathologies. This study investigated the intracellular fate of P. acnes in macrophages after phagocytosis. In a mouse model of P. acnes-induced chronic prostatic inflammation, the bacterium could be detected in prostate-infiltrating macrophages at 2 weeks postinfection. Further studies performed in the human macrophage cell line THP-1 revealed intracellular survival and persistence of P. acnes but no intracellular replication or escape from the host cell. Confocal analyses of phagosome acidification and maturation were performed. Acidification of P. acnes-containing phagosomes was observed at 6 h postinfection but then lost again, indicative of cytosolic escape of P. acnes or intraphagosomal pH neutralization. No colocalization with the lysosomal markers LAMP1 and cathepsin D was observed, implying that the P. acnes-containing phagosome does not fuse with lysosomes. Our findings give first insights into the intracellular fate of P. acnes; its persistency is likely to be important for the development of P. acnes-associated inflammatory diseases
The effective use of focused shadowgraphy for single bubble nucleate pool boiling investigations
Paper delivered at the 9th European Thermal Sciences Conference (Eurotherm 2024).Nucleate pool boiling is known for its high heat transfer coefficients. Despite being
widely implemented, the prediction of nucleate pool boiling mechanisms remains complex and
single bubble heat transfer analysis is helpful to simplify the problem. Owing to the interesting
bubble behaviour during nucleate pool boiling, publications tend to focus on the bubble
dynamics while the experimental setup is only briefly discussed. Small but critical information
on the experimental setup is often omitted, which makes it challenging or even impossible to
reproduce or compare experimental data. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a
systematic approach to using focused shadowgraphy for the investigation of single bubble
dynamics using R245fa. A pool boiling experimental setup has been built and equipped with
temperature, pressure and heat flux sensors, as well as a high-speed camera and light source. The
nucleate pool boiling takes place at a single cavity on a copper block. The influences of the heat
transfer surface area, light source, and diffuser films were investigated to provide a systematic
approach to the use of focused shadowgraphy for the investigation of single bubble dynamics. This research was conducted as part of a Junior Fellowship funded by the University of Bayreuth Centre of International Excellence “Alexander von Humboldt”. Funding from the University of
