Explicit parametric solutions of lattice structures with proper generalized decomposition (PGD): applications to the design of 3D-printed architectured materials
The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00466-017-1534-9Architectured materials (or metamaterials) are constituted by a unit-cell with a complex structural design repeated periodically forming a bulk material with emergent mechanical properties. One may obtain specific macro-scale (or bulk) properties in the resulting architectured material by properly designing the unit-cell. Typically, this is stated as an optimal design problem in which the parameters describing the shape and mechanical properties of the unit-cell are selected in order to produce the desired bulk characteristics. This is especially pertinent due to the ease manufacturing of these complex structures with 3D printers. The proper generalized decomposition provides explicit parametic solutions of parametric PDEs. Here, the same ideas are used to obtain parametric solutions of the algebraic equations arising from lattice structural models. Once the explicit parametric solution is available, the optimal design problem is a simple post-process. The same strategy is applied in the numerical illustrations, first to a unit-cell (and then homogenized with periodicity conditions), and in a second phase to the complete structure of a lattice material specimen.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Franciscans developed a more humanist religiousness pinned on the individual person; designed to the faithfull. They didn’t use Latin, that was the language spoken by the Church in those days, but the vernacular language in each village. Furthermore, the developed religious practices in which the visual and sentimental image was veryimportant, sure that this language touched the simple humanbody deeply in an easy way.peerReviewe

Cognitive outcome and gamma noise power unrelated to neuregulin 1 and 3 variation in schizophrenia
Background
Neuregulins are a family of signalling proteins that orchestrate a broad range of cellular responses. Four genes encoding Neuregulins 1–4 have been identified so far in vertebrates. Among them, Neuregulin 1 and Neuregulin 3 have been reported to contribute to an increased risk for developing schizophrenia. We hypothesized that three specific variants of these genes (rs6994992 and rs3924999 for Neuregulin 1 and rs10748842 for Neuregulin 3) that have been related to this illness may modify information processing capacity in the cortex, which would be reflected in electrophysiological parameters (P3b amplitude or gamma noise power) and/or cognitive performance.
Methods
We obtained DNA from 31 patients with schizophrenia and 23 healthy controls and analyzed NRG1 rs6994992, NRG1 rs3924999 and NRG3 rs10748842 promoter polymorphisms by allelic discrimination with real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We compared cognitive outcome, P300 amplitude parameters and an electroencephalographic measure of noise power in the gamma band between the groups dichotomized according to genotype.
Results
Contrary to our hypothesis, we could not detect any significant influence of variation in Neuregulin 1/Neuregulin 3 polymorphisms on cognitive performance or electrophysiological parameters of patients with schizophrenia.
Conclusions
Despite our findings, we cannot discard that other genetic variants and, more likely, interactions between those variants and with genetic variation related to different pathways may still influence cerebral processing in schizophrenia
Voice recognition systems toward a universal language
An analysis of the major achievements of the last quarter of a century
(means of transport and of communication, microelectronics,
the conquest of Space, the globalisation of Society, computer networks,
blocks of countries, the proliferation of International organisms
and so on) would seem to suggest the need for a scientific study
into the possibilities of a universal language. A real need exists,
every day more pronounced and we consider that this is the right
time for this investigation. As a part of this project a discussion of
possible alternative solutions is proposed (the use of a multi-lingual
approach, English, multilingual intercompression, an international
auxiliary language, "manufactured" languages, automatic translation,
natural language, among others). There is also a definition of the
theoretical specifications which this language should meet, taking
into account all the current needs and the sectors involved (voice
recognition automatic translation, operative systems, programming
languages, documentation, simple cross-cultural learning). The idea
is based on a dual focus: person-to-person communication and person-to-machine communication. In order to achieve thi doubled
to achieve this double objective we shall select a set of universal sounds and phonemes which
are common and undcrstood by all people. The selection of this set
of universal sounds and phonemes will be such that it will be easy to
undertake a spectral discrimination. The phonetic, lexical and
grammatical organisation of the language will be established according to distinct levels of difficulty.
Design and development will be based on the Internet as a
platform for investigation, cooperation and the consensus of hundreds
of experts and a strategy is proposed for learning and spreading
the language
Improvement of InAs quantum dots optical properties in close proximity to GaAs(0 0 1) substrate surface
5 páginas, 4 figuras.-- PACS codes: 78.67.Hc; 81.05.Ea; 81.07.Ta; 81.15.Hi; 81.16.DnIn this work we demonstrate a growth process for obtaining high optical emission efficiency InAs/GaAs(0 0 1) quantum dots (QD) formed at short distance to the interface with the GaAs substrate. In particular, after an initial exposure of the substrate surface to long times of atomic hydrogen flux (tH up to 45 min) followed by a posterior growth of a GaAs buffer layer by atomic layer molecular beam epitaxy, both steps at low substrate temperature (TS=450 °C), an enhancement of InAs QD optical emission efficiency is obtained, even at close proximity (3.5 nm) to the substrate interface. This process fulfils the strict requirements in terms of substrate temperature and buffer layer thickness (distance from the QD to the substrate interface) for its possible use as an optimal regrowth protocol on previously patterned GaAs substrates. This work was financed by Spanish MEC(TEC2005-05781-C03-

Improvement of saffron production using Curtobacterium herbarum as a bioinoculant under greenhouse conditions
[EN] Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) are natural soil bacteria which establish a
beneficial relationship with their host. This microbiota community exists in the rhizosphere and
inside plant tissues and stimulates plant growth by a variety of direct or indirect mechanisms. These
bacterial plant promoters are frequently present in different environments, and are associated with
many plant species, both wild and agricultural. Saffron is the dried stigmas of Crocus sativus (L.)
and is the most expensive spice in the world. Remarkably, saffron cultivation and collection is
carried out by hand and does not involve the use of machines. Additionally, 150 flowers are needed
to produce one gram of dried stigmas. Hence, a slight increase in the size of the saffron filaments per
plant would result in a significant increase in the production of this spice. In this study, we report the
improved production of saffron using Curtobacterium herbarum Cs10, isolated from Crocus
seronitus subs clusii, as a bioinoculant. The bacterial strain was selected owing to its multifunctional
ability to produce siderophores, solubilize phosphate and to produce plant growth hormones like IAA.
Furthermore, the isolate was tested on saffron producing plants under greenhouse conditions. The
results indicate that Curtobacterium herbarum Cs10 improves the number of flowers and
significantly enhances the length of the saffron filaments and overall saffron production compared to
the control treated plants
