Feasibility assessment of energy-neutral microalgae-based wastewater treatment plants under Spanish climatic conditions

    Get PDF
The energy balance of a hypothetical microalgae-based wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) has been performed for thirteen geographic locations covering the whole range of latitudes, longitudes and climate conditions of the different Spanish regions. The proposed WWTP includes high rate algae ponds (HRAPs) for secondary treatment and nitrogen removal, anaerobic codigestion of primary sludge and the biomass grown in the HRAPs, and a combined heat and power unit for electricity and heat production. The operation of the HRAPs was optimized using the BIO_ALGAE model, which also predicted the biomass production of the HRAPs under the different climate conditions. Under the assumptions of this study, the electrical energy balance resulted neutral or even positive in all the locations during the whole year, in spite of the climatic conditions variations. However, the heat balance resulted closer to the neutral footprint. The most favorable locations (Almeria and Seville, south of Spain) were analyzed in detail, confirming the feasibility of a positive electrical energy balance, while the heat balance resulted slightly negative in the cold season. Along with the solar radiation, the air temperature and its variation during the year are determinant to predict the feasibility of the heat balance in the proposed WWTP scheme.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Climate change projections for winter streamflow in Douro river

Ponencia presentada en: X Congreso de la Asociación Española de Climatología celebrado en Alicante entre el 5 y el 8 de octubre de 2016.[EN]Climate change projections for the winter streamflow of the Douro River have been obtained for the period 2071-2099, using the Principal Component Regression (PCR) method. The winter streamflow time series (January to March) from eight stations distributed over the basin, covering the period 1950-2011, were used as predictand variables, while the principal components (PCs) of the winter (December to February) anomalies of sea level pressure (SLP) were used as predictors of the streamflow for the development of a statistical downscaling model. The period 1950- 1995 was used for the calibration of the regression model, while 1996-2011 was used as validation period. The statistical downscaling model fitted from the observational SLP data was applied to the SLP outputs of three GCMs for the period 2071-2099, under the climate change scenarios RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. This work has been financed by the projects P11-RNM-7941 (Junta de Andalucía- Spain) and CGL2013-48539-R (MINECO-Spain, FEDER)

Differences and similarities between oral and written competence in Spanish pre-university students. A correlation study.

The Foreign Language (FL) section of Spanish University Entrance Examination (EFL-PAU) has had few revisions over the last twenty years. The Spanish government has substituted the old EFL-PAU University Entrance Examination by a high stakes Baccalaureate Final Evaluation. However, further changes are expected in the coming years. Among the most important ones for the Foreign Language Section is a deep and necessary revision with the inclusion of new types of tasks. To try and inform the decisions made for the new Baccalaureate Final Evaluation, this article reports on the quantitative and qualitative analyses conducted thanks to a pilot oral test carried out with 772 recorded candidate performances. Three main goals were established for this research: 1) to find out the most important variables which characterize foreign language learning in secondary school in Spain; 2) to find out if there is any correlation between the oral competence of students at the end of their non-compulsory secondary education (as obtained from the pilot study) and the marks students obtain in the University Entrance Examination (which does not include the oral skill); and 3) to find out any aspects related to EFL teaching and learning which may potentially enhance oral performance. The results of this paper provide rich information on the students? foreign language learning context, the strong correlation between the written and oral competences and the need to pay attention to three variables which foster the development of oral foreign language in secondary school classroomsMinisterio de Ciencia e Innovació

Polyhydroxybutyrate and glycogen production in photobioreactors inoculated with wastewater borne cyanobacteria monocultures

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to investigate the PHB and glycogen accumulation dynamics in two photobioreactors inoculated with different monocultures of wastewater-borne cyanobacteria, using a three-stage feeding strategy (growth phase, feast-famine phase and feast phase). Two cyanobacterial monocultures containing members of Synechocystis sp. or Synechococcus sp. were collected from treated wastewater and inoculated in lab-scale photobioreactors to evaluate the PHB and glycogen accumulation. A third photobioreactor with a complex microbial community grown in real wastewater was also set up. During each experimental phase different concentrations of inorganic carbon were applied to the cultures, these shifts allowed to discern the accumulation mechanism of carbon storage polymers (PHB and glycogen) in cyanobacteria. Conversion of one into the other was directly related to the carbon content. The highest PHB and glycogen contents (5.04%dcw and 69%dcw, respectively) were achieved for Synechocystis sp

Design and test of cryogenic cold plate for thermal-vacuum testing of space components

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a novel cryogenic fluid cold plate designed for the testing of cryogenic space components. The cold plate is able to achieve cryogenic temperature operation down to -196 °C with a low liquid nitrogen (LN2) consumption. A good tradeoff between high rigidity and low thermal conduction is achieved thanks to a hexapod configuration, which is formed by six hinge-axle-hole articulations in which each linking rod bears only axial loads. Thus, there is not any stress concentration, which reduces the diameter of rod sections and reduces the rods' thermal conduction. This novel design has a unique set of the following properties: Simple construction, low thermal conduction, high thermal inertia, lack of vibrational noise when cooling, isostatic structural behavior, high natural frequency response, adjustable position, vacuum-suitability, reliability, and non-magnetic. Additionally, the presented cold plate design is low-cost and can be easily replicated. Experimental tests showed that a temperature of at least -190 °C can be reached on the top surface of the cold plate with an LN2 consumption of 10 liters and a minimum vibration frequency of 115 Hz, which is high enough for most vibration tests of space components. The research leading to these results received funding from the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad inside the Plan Estatal de I+D+I 2013-2016 under grant agreement n° ESP2015-72458-EXP.
