    Lump solitons in a higher-order nonlinear equation in 2 + 1 dimensions

    Get PDF
We propose and examine an integrable system of nonlinear equations that generalizes the nonlinear Schr ̈ odinger equation to 2 + 1 dimensions. This integrable system of equations is a promising starting point to elaborate more accurate models in nonlinear optics and molecular systems within the continuum limit. The Lax pair for the system is derived after applying the singular manifold method. We also present an iterative procedure to construct the solutions from a seed solution. Solutions with one-, two-, and three-lump solitons are thoroughly discussed

Exposing undergraduate students to research: A Condensed Matter Physics case study

[EN] In an effort to communicate major scientific breakthroughs to a vast audience, the media tends to present brief accounts of the findings and the process towards their discovery. While this may be sufficient for the layperson, it is certainly not enough for an undergraduate student in a scientific discipline. Moreover, the media will unlikely be able to judge the relevance of different breakthroughs and more emphasis will be put in those discoveries with more captivating titles. This is particularly worrying when it comes to actual students as it utterly biases their decisions when aiming to pursue a research career. The fact that syllabi tend to leave little to no room for introducing concepts that go beyond the standard curriculum leaves this problem unsolved. With the aim of tackling these issues, we have organized a workshop where experts from various institutions delivered lectures and even performed exhibitions of the phenomena being discussed. The initiative, named Recent Advances in Condensed Matter Physics, was aimed at undergraduate Physics students in their last two years at our University. In order to assess the strategies of our learning methodology, the experiment was carried out for three consecutive academic years and feedback from students was collected in the form of homework and surveys. The results show that introducing recent research discoveries in the curricula is a complex yet profitable strategy. The authors thank Dunkan Martínez for helpful discussions. Meta-hydrodynamic routes to viscous electron flow

Viscous flow of interacting electrons in two dimensional materials features a bunch of exotic effects. A model resembling the Navier-Stokes equation for classical fluids accounts for them in the so called hydrodynamic regime. This regime occurs when electron-electron collisions are frequent enough. We performed a detailed analysis of the hydrodynamic requirements and found three new routes to achieve viscous electron flow: favouring frequent inelastic collisions, the application of a magnetic field or a high-frequency electric field. More reflective edges of the material further span the range of validity of the above conditions. Our results show that the conventional requirement of frequent electron-electron collisions is too restrictive, and, as a consequence, materials and phenomena to be described using hydrodynamics are widened. We discuss recent experiments regarding Poiseuille-like flows, superballistic conduction and negative resistances as signatures for viscous flow onset. We conclude that these usual signatures of viscous electron flow are achieved by following alternative meta-hydrodynamic routes

This paper focus on focuses on the review of the teaching methodologies implemented throughout the academic years 2018/19 and 2019/20 in the practical course Legal Clinic on Human Rights and Business of the Faculty of Law of the University of Seville, as a specific result of the Legal Clinic teaching innovation project of the Faculty of Law (CLDHE-US), approved under the frame of “III Plan Propio de Docencia” of the University of Seville. The work begins with a reflection on the need to transform the practical Law teaching processes and how clinical education can be incorporated into them. Subsequently, the paper continues by describing the specific context in which the innovation project under analysis is deployed, focusing on those previous existing conditions and delimiting the fields of study. This is followed by different learning approaches used in clinical education, detailing the methods used in the project. The study then continues with a synthesis of key deliverables and the techniques used for such purpose. Finally, the paper outlines a series of competences acquired and developed by students.
