CMB temperature anisotropies from third order gravitational perturbations
In this paper we present a complete computation of the Cosmic Microwave
Background (CMB) anisotropies up to third order from gravitational
perturbations accounting for scalar, vector and tensor perturbations. We then
specify our results to the large scale limit, providing the evolution of the
gravitational potentials in a flat universe filled with matter and cosmological
constant which characterizes the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. As a byproduct
in the large scale approximation we are able to give non-perturbative solutions
for the photon geodesic equations. Our results are the first step to provide a
complete theoretical prediction for cubic non-linearities which are
particularly relevant for characterizing the level of non-Gaussianity in the
CMB through the detection of the four-point angular connected correlation
function (trispectrum). For this purpose we also allow for generic initial

Understanding Rates of Marijuana Use and Consequences Among Adolescents in a Changing Legal Landscape.
Purpose of Review:There is not one answer to address whether marijuana use has increased, decreased, or stayed the same given changes in state legalization of medical and non-medical marijuana in the USA. Recent Findings:Evidence suggests some health benefits for medical marijuana; however, initiation of marijuana use is a risk factor for developing problem cannabis use. Though use rates have remained stable over recent years, about one in three 10th graders report marijuana use, most adolescents do not view the drug as harmful, and over 650,000 youth aged 12 to 17 struggle with cannabis use disorder. Summary:Although the health benefits of medical marijuana are becoming better understood, more research is needed. Intervention and prevention programs must better address effects of marijuana, acknowledging that while there may be some benefits medically, marijuana use can affect functioning during adolescence when the brain is still developing
Entanglement distribution for a practical quantum-dot-based quantum processor architecture
We propose a quantum dot (QD) architecture for enabling universal quantum information processing. Quantum registers, consisting of arrays of vertically stacked self-assembled semiconductor QDs, are connected by chains of in-plane self-assembled dots. We propose an entanglement distributor, a device for producing and distributing maximally entangled qubits on demand, communicated through in-plane dot chains. This enables the transmission of entanglement to spatially separated register stacks, providing a resource for the realization of a sizeable quantum processor built from coupled register stacks of practical size. Our entanglement distributor could be integrated into many of the present proposals for self-assembled QD-based quantum computation (QC). Our device exploits the properties of simple, relatively short, spin-chains and does not require microcavities. Utilizing the properties of self-assembled QDs, after distribution the entanglement can be mapped into relatively long-lived spin qubits and purified, providing a flexible, distributed, off-line resource. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft
Local magnitude estimate at Mt. Etna
In order to verify the duration magnitude MD we calculated local magnitude ML values of 288 earthquakes occurring
from October 2002 to April 2003 at Mt. Etna. The analysis was computed at three digital stations of the
permanent seismic network of Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia of Catania, using the relationship
ML = logA+alog?-b, where A is maximum half-amplitude of the horizontal component of the seismic recording
measured in mm and the term «+alog?-b» takes the place of the term «-logA0» of Richter relationship. In
particular, a = 0.15 for ?<200 km, b=0.16 for ?<200 km. Duration magnitude MD values, moment magnitude
MW values and other local magnitude values were compared. Differences between ML and MD were obtained for
the strong seismic swarms occurring on October 27, during the onset of 2002-2003 Mt. Etna eruption, characterized
by a high earthquake rate, with very strong events (seismogram results clipped in amplitude on drum
recorder trace) and high level of volcanic tremor, which not permit us to estimate the duration of the earthquakes
correctly. ML and MD relationships were related and therefore a new relationship for MD is proposed. Cumulative
strain release calculated after the eruption using ML values is about 1.75E+06 J1/2 higher than the one calculated
using MD values
Spin-based quantum gating with semiconductor quantum dots by bichromatic radiation method
A potential scheme is proposed for realizing a two-qubit quantum gate in
semiconductor quantum dots. Information is encoded in the spin degrees of
freedom of one excess conduction electron of each quantum dot. We propose to
use two lasers, radiation two neighboring QDs, and tuned to blue detuning with
respect to the resonant frequencies of individual excitons. The two-qubit phase
gate can be achieved by means of both Pauli-blocking effect and dipole-dipole
coupling between intermediate excitonic states.Comment: Europhysics Letters 66 (2004) 1
A Search for Pulsars in Quiescent Soft X-Ray Transients. I
We have carried out a deep search at 1.4 GHz for radio pulsed emission from
six soft X-ray transient sources observed during their X-ray quiescent phase.
The commonly accepted model for the formation of the millisecond radio pulsars
predicts the presence of a rapidly rotating, weakly magnetized neutron star in
the core of these systems. The sudden drop in accretion rate associated with
the end of an X-ray outburst causes the Alfv\`en surface to move outside the
light cylinder, allowing the pulsar emission process to operate. No pulsed
signal was detected from the sources in our sample. We discuss several
mechanisms that could hamper the detection and suggest that free-free
absorption from material ejected from the system by the pulsar radiation
pressure could explain our null result.Comment: accepted by Ap
