Do you know this syndrome? Dyspigmentation along the Blaschko lines caused by trisomy 7 mosaicism

    Get PDF
Dyspigmentation along the Blaschko lines is strongly suggestive of a mosaic skin disorder. We report a 9-year-old male patient who presented with swirls and streaks of both hypo and hyperpigmentation involving the entire body. Additionally, he had hypertrichosis, musculoskeletal and minor neurodevelopment abnormalities but no intellectual disability. Cultured fibroblast displayed trisomy 7 mosaicism, which can explain this pigmentary phenotype. Widespread dyspigmentation associated with involvement of other organs should prompt systemic examination to detect additional anomalies and genetic evaluation should be considered, even with normal fetal karyotype.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

In the eye of the beholder? Oxytocin effects on eye movements in schizophrenia

    Get PDF
Background Individuals with schizophrenia have difficulty in extracting salient information from faces. Eye-tracking studies have reported that these individuals demonstrate reduced exploratory viewing behaviour (i.e. reduced number of fixations and shorter scan paths) compared to healthy controls. Oxytocin has previously been demonstrated to exert pro-social effects and modulate eye gaze during face exploration. In this study, we tested whether oxytocin has an effect on visual attention in patients with schizophrenia. Methods Nineteen male participants with schizophrenia received intranasal oxytocin 40UI or placebo in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover fashion during two visits separated by seven days. They engaged in a free-viewing eye-tracking task, exploring images of Caucasian men displaying angry, happy, and neutral emotional expressions; and control images of animate and inanimate stimuli. Eye-tracking parameters included: total number of fixations, mean duration of fixations, dispersion, and saccade amplitudes. Results We found a main effect of treatment, whereby oxytocin increased the total number of fixations, dispersion, and saccade amplitudes, while decreasing the duration of fixations compared to placebo. This effect, however, was non-specific to facial stimuli. When restricting the analysis to facial images only, we found the same effect. In addition, oxytocin modulated fixation rates in the eye and nasion regions. Discussion This is the first study to explore the effects of oxytocin on eye gaze in schizophrenia. Oxytocin had enhanced exploratory viewing behaviour in response to both facial and inanimate control stimuli. We suggest that the acute administration of intranasal oxytocin may have the potential to enhance visual attention in schizophrenia

Induction of protective immunity to Theileria annulata using two major merozoite surface antigens presented by different delivery systems

Allelic forms (Tams1-1 and Tams1-2) of the major merozoite surface antigen gene of Theileria annulata have recently been expressed in Escherichia coli and in Salmonella typhimurium aroA vaccine strain SL3261. To test the potential of subunit vaccines against T. annulata infection, we immunized four groups of three calves with either recombinant (re-) (Tams1-1 and Tams1-2) proteins or naked DNA encoding these antigens. Group I was immunized intramuscularly with both re-proteins incorporated into immunostimulating complexes (ISCOMs). Group II was inoculated intramuscularly with naked plasmid DNA encoding Tams1-1 and Tams1-2 Groups III and IV received S. typhimurium SL3261 [pSTams1-1][pIP5] and SL3261 [pSTams1-2][pIP5] subcutaneously and orally, respectively. A final group of three animals (Group V) sewed as an unimmunized control group. Four weeks after the last immunization all calves were challenged with a T. annulata stabilate generated from blood of an infected animal with 30% piroplasm parasitaemia. All calves vaccinated with ISCOMs proved to be protected from T. annulata infection and had generated antibodies against both re-(Tams1-1 and Tams1-2) at the time of challenge. In two of these animals the antibody had a surface binding profile by IFAT. Two of three calves immunized with naked DNA also proved to be protected, but none of the animals had generated any de

Evidence of resonant surface wave excitation in the relativistic regime through measurements of proton acceleration from grating targets

    Get PDF
The interaction of laser pulses with thin grating targets, having a periodic groove at the irradiated surface, has been experimentally investigated. Ultrahigh contrast (1012\sim 10^{12}) pulses allowed to demonstrate an enhanced laser-target coupling for the first time in the relativistic regime of ultra-high intensity >10^{19} \mbox{W/cm}^{2}. A maximum increase by a factor of 2.5 of the cut-off energy of protons produced by Target Normal Sheath Acceleration has been observed with respect to plane targets, around the incidence angle expected for resonant excitation of surface waves. A significant enhancement is also observed for small angles of incidence, out of resonance.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 2nd version implements final correction

Session 1 - Vocational Education and Training: basics for teaching and research in Vocational Education and Training at universities

    Get PDF
This session highlights the basics of Vocational Education and Training (VET). Each university has its own characteristics. The contributions seek to encourage various forms of VET. Challenges for universities and other institutions are emphasised. The contributions help draw conclusions for the Further structuring of VET in Sub-Saharan Africa. Other country-specific articles from the session concentrate on the characteristics and orientation of VET systems, thereby helping create an overall picture of the status of VET in all participating countries. The participants endeavored to analyze the current situation of VET in Sub-Saharan Africa by exploring the character and individual design of the current VET systems in the participating countries

A violência contra mulheres: demandas espontâneas e busca ativa em unidade básica de saúde

    Get PDF
