Continuous twin screw rheo-extrusion of an AZ91D magnesium alloy
© The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International 2012The twin screw rheo-extrusion (TSRE) is designed to take advantage of the nondendritc microstructure and thixotropic characterization of semisolid-metal slurries and produce simple metal profiles directly from melts. The extrusion equipment consists of a rotor-stator high shear slurry maker, a twin screw extruder, and a die assembly. The process is continuous and has a potential for significantly saving energy, manufacturing cost, and enhancing efficiency. The present investigation was carried out to study the process performance for processing rods of an AZ91D magnesium alloy and the microstructure evolution during processing. The semisolid slurry prepared by the process was characterized by uniformly distributed nondendritic granular primary phase particles. AZ91D rods with uniform and fine microstructures and moderate mechanical properties were produced. For the given slurry making parameters, decreasing extrusion temperature was found to improve microstructures and properties. The mechanisms of particle granulation and refinement and the effect of processing parameters on process performance and thermal management are discussed. © 2012 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International.EPSRC (UK) and Rautomead Lt
Wait-Learning: Leveraging Wait Time for Second Language Education
Competing priorities in daily life make it difficult for those with a casual interest in learning to set aside time for regular practice. In this paper, we explore wait-learning: leveraging brief moments of waiting during a person's existing conversations for second language vocabulary practice, even if the conversation happens in the native language. We present an augmented version of instant messaging, WaitChatter, that supports the notion of wait-learning by displaying contextually relevant foreign language vocabulary and micro-quizzes just-in-time while the user awaits a response from her conversant. Through a two week field study of WaitChatter with 20 people, we found that users were able to learn 57 new words on average during casual instant messaging. Furthermore, we found that users were most receptive to learning opportunities immediately after sending a chat message, and that this timing may be critical given user tendency to multi-task during waiting periods.Quanta Computer (Firm)Lincoln Laborator
Orthoconic antiferroelectric liquid crystals for non-display applications
Antiferroelectric liquid crystals are attractive for microdisplay applications, because of their fast switching and wide viewing angle; however the pretransitional effect reduces the contrast of the display. As a promising alternative orthoconic antiferroelectric liquid crystals (OAFLC) with a cone angle of 90º provide a good dark state between crossed polarized independently of the cell rotation. These materials are properly surface stabilized in 1.5μm thick cell required for π retardation, which limits their use in display applications. In this work, new OAFLC mixtures have been surface stabilized in thick cells. This achievement may open a new area of OAFLC applications in photonic devices

The use of the task method in civic education of students
© 2016 by iSER, International Society of Educational Research. At the present stage of the development of the educational system, great emphasis is placed on transition from knowledge paradigm toward consolidation-oriented content of education. One of the most forward-looking methods, in this process, to simulate any situation and find an adequate solution, is knowledge method. The purpose of the article is to present work experience in the use of the task method in the educational system. The leading method in the study this problem was task method, which allows the most effectively, taking into account the trends in development of the education system, to address the problems of nature, namely development of civil position of the individual learning youth. The article submitted by the use of different types of tasks, in particular multicultural and civil, civil and axiological, participative and civil dealing with the challenges of education young students in educational organizations. The optimum system of tasks is developed, aimed at solving the problems of nature and their use of technology in the educational system. This article can be useful for teachers of general secondary and higher education, in the working out of the educational disciplines, as well as professionals working in the sphere of additional education
HiReD: a high-resolution multi-window visualisation environment for cluster-driven displays
High-resolution, wall-size displays often rely on bespoke software for performing interactive data visualisation, leading to interface designs with little or no consistency between displays. This makes adoption for novice users difficult when migrating from desktop environments. However, desktop interface techniques (such as task- and menu- bars) do not scale well and so cannot be relied on to drive the design of large display interfaces. In this paper we present HiReD, a multi-window environment for cluster-driven displays. As well as describing the technical details of the system, we also describe a suite of low-precision interface techniques that aim to provide a familiar desktop environment to the user while overcoming the scalability issues of high-resolution displays. We hope that these techniques, as well as the implementation of HiReD itself, can encourage good practice in the design and development of future interfaces for high-resolution, wall-size displays
Intensity-Based Registration of Freehand 3D Ultrasound and CT-scan Images of the Kidney
This paper presents a method to register a pre-operative Computed-Tomography
(CT) volume to a sparse set of intra-operative Ultra-Sound (US) slices. In the
context of percutaneous renal puncture, the aim is to transfer planning
information to an intra-operative coordinate system. The spatial position of
the US slices is measured by optically localizing a calibrated probe. Assuming
the reproducibility of kidney motion during breathing, and no deformation of
the organ, the method consists in optimizing a rigid 6 Degree Of Freedom (DOF)
transform by evaluating at each step the similarity between the set of US
images and the CT volume. The correlation between CT and US images being
naturally rather poor, the images have been preprocessed in order to increase
their similarity. Among the similarity measures formerly studied in the context
of medical image registration, Correlation Ratio (CR) turned out to be one of
the most accurate and appropriate, particularly with the chosen non-derivative
minimization scheme, namely Powell-Brent's. The resulting matching transforms
are compared to a standard rigid surface registration involving segmentation,
regarding both accuracy and repeatability. The obtained results are presented
and discussed
General thoughts to the Kaon pair production in the threshold region
Simple--minded thoughts about the cross sections for the reactions
pp-->ppK+K- and pp-->ppK0K0 are presented, which certainly do not account for
the complex coupled channel problem but rather provide some ideas into the
mutual reaction dynamics.Comment: Talk given at 9th International Workshop on Meson Production,
