Medellín como una representación de la decadencia de Colombia en Casablanca la bella de Fernando Vallejo

The article analyses the representation of Medellín in Fernando Vallejo’s 2013 novel Casablanca la bella in the context of Zygmunt Bauman’s liquid modernity concept and other cultural theories of the urban, which can be applied to Colombia in the context of omnipresence of violence. The analysis proves that the narrator-protagonist, disappointed with the modernity in Colombian context, is incapable of accepting the changes that the city as well as the country have suffered during his life and uses the descriptions of the urban space for social criticism. Poland is about to face social changes caused by a huge number of refugees and immigrants heading towards Europe. Not all of them come from societies whose culture is close to ours. The crisis of the peaceful idea of coexistence of cultures ((Multikulti) inspires us to analyse the European experience in the process of building integrated society and to draw conclusions. In this way we can avoid repeating some mistakes of other countries. Stimulatory effect of fluoxetine and desipramine, but not mirtazapine on C26 colon carcinoma hepatic metastases formation : association with cytokines

Due to the high prevalence of depression among cancer patients, antidepressant medications are frequently administered as adjuvant treatment. However, the safety of such medications in the development of metastasis is unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of fluoxetine, desipramine, and mirtazapine on the liver metastasis of murine C26 colon carcinoma (cc). Balb/c male mice were administered these antidepressants intraperitoneally (i.p.) for 14 days following intrasplenic injections of C26 colon carcinoma cells. Desipramine and fluoxetine, but not mirtazapine, significantly increased the number of tumor foci and total volume of the tumor in liver tissue. This effect was associated with a decrease in the ability of splenocytes to produce interleukin (IL)-1$\beta$ and interferon (IFN)-γ and an increase in their ability to produce interleukin (IL)-10. Similar changes were observed in plasma IL-1$\beta$, IFN-γ, and IL-10 levels. The current study demonstrates that the stimulatory effect of desipramine and fluoxetine, but not mirtazapine, on experimental colon cancer liver metastasis is associated with a suppression of immune defenses against the tumor

Arrhythmic manifestation of non-compaction cardiomyopathy of both ventricles

This paper presents a case report of a patient diagnosed with a rare non-compaction cardiomyopathy of both ventricles. The diagnosis was based on echocardiography after excluding other possible causes of myocardial damage. The reason for the initiation of cardiological diagnostics was a history of syncope, the cause of which was finally considered to be paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia. In the secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death, the patient was implanted with a cardioverter-defibrillator. The thrombus found in the left ventricle was successfully treated with anticoagulants

Niewydolność serca jako kliniczna manifestacja amyloidozy

W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono opis przypadku pacjenta, u którego rozpoznano amyloidozę z zajęciem mięśnia serca. Podejrzenie ostatecznego rozpoznania wysunięto na podstawie wykonanych badań laboratoryjnych oraz badania echokardiograficznego. Na podstawie badania histologicznego wycinka z śluzówki odbytnicy ostatecznie rozpoznano amyloidozę. U pacjenta nie podjęto leczenia, został on skierowany do Ośrodka referencyjnego.W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono opis przypadku pacjenta, u którego rozpoznano amyloidozę z zajęciem mięśnia sercowego. Podejrzenie ostatecznego rozpoznania wysunięto na podstawie wykonanych badań laboratoryjnych oraz badania echokardiograficznego. Na podstawie badania histologicznego wycinka z śluzówki odbytnicy ostatecznie rozpoznano amyloidozę. U pacjenta nie podjęto leczenia, został on skierowany do ośrodka referencyjnego

Dwa rzadkie przypadki izolowanego niescalonego mięśnia lewej komory zdiagnozowane u pacjentów w podeszłym wieku

Isolated non-compaction of the left ventricle (LVNC) is a rare disorder, classified as a primary genetic or unclassified cardiomyopathy. Left ventricular non-compaction is characterised by an altered myocardial wall with prominent trabeculae and deep intertrabecular recesses caused by intrauterine arrest of compaction. This anomaly creates two layers consisting of compacted and non-compacted myocardium. Left ventricular non-compaction is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality in adults with no specific therapy. We report two rare cases of LVNC diagnosed in elderly patients. W pracy przedstawiono opis przypadku pacjenta, u którego rozpoznano rzadką kardiomiopatię z niescalenia mięśnia obu komór serca. Rozpoznania dokonano na podstawie echokardiografii, po wykluczeniu innych możliwych przyczyn uszkodzenia mięśnia sercowego. Powodem rozpoczęcia diagnostyki kardiologicznej był wywiad omdleń, za których przyczynę ostatecznie uznano napadowe częstoskurcze komorowe. W profilaktyce wtórnej nagłej śmierci sercowej implantowano choremu wszczepialny kardiowerter-defibrylator. Stwierdzoną w lewej komorze skrzeplinę skutecznie leczono lekami przeciwzakrzepowymi.W pracy przedstawiono opis przypadku pacjenta, u którego rozpoznano rzadką kardiomiopatię z niescalenia mięśnia obu komór serca. Rozpoznania dokonano na podstawie echokardiografii, po wykluczeniu innych możliwych przyczyn uszkodzenia mięśnia sercowego.
