A third HI 21-cm absorption system in the sight-line of MG J0414+0534: A redshift for Object X?
We report the detection of a third HI 21-cm absorber in the sight-line
towards the z=2.64 quasar MG J0414+0534 (4C +05.19). In addition to the
absorption at the host redshift and in the z=0.96 gravitational lens, we find,
through a decimetre-wave spectral scan towards this source, strong absorption
at z=0.38. We believe this may be associated with "Object X", an additional
feature apparent in the field of the lensing galaxy and lensed images, on the
basis of its close proximity to the quasar images and the possible detection of
the [OIII] doublet in a published optical spectrum. If real, the strength of
the [OIII] emission would suggest the presence of an active galactic nucleus,
or a gas-rich galaxy undergoing rapid star formation, either of which is
consistent with the strong outflows apparent in the 21-cm spectrum. Although
this is the strongest intervening 21-cm absorber yet found, simultaneous
observations failed to detect any of the 18-cm OH lines at the 21-cm redshift.
This suggests that, as for the lensing galaxy, this is not the primary location
of the intervening material responsible for the very red colour of MG

Localised HI 21-cm absorption towards a double-lobed z=0.24 radio galaxy
We present the results of a mini-survey for associated HI 21-cm absorption at
z < 0.42 with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. Our targets are radio
galaxies, selected on the basis that the 1216 Angstrom luminosities are below
10^23 W/Hz, above which there has never been a detection of 21-cm absorption.
Of the three sources for which we obtained good data, two are unclassified
active galactic nuclei (AGN) and one is type-2. Being a non-detection, the
type-2 object is consistent with our previous result that 21-cm absorption in
radio sources is not dictated by unified schemes of AGN. In the case of the
detection, the absorption only occurs towards one of the two resolved radio
lobes in PKS 1649-062. If the absorption is due to an another intervening
galaxy, or cool HI gas in the intergalactic medium, covering only the
south-west lobe, then, being at the same redshift, this is likely to be
gravitationally bound to the optical object identified as PKS 1649-062. If the
absorption is due to an inclined disk centred between the lobes, intervening
the SW lobe while being located behind the NE lobe, by assuming that it covers
the emission peak at 150 kpc from the nucleus, we estimate a dynamical mass of
~3 x 10^12 solar masses for the disk.Comment: 5 pages accepted by MNRAS Letter
An experimental study of energy loss mechanisms and efficiency consideration in the low power dc arcjet
The potential utility of the low power dc arcjet in auxiliary propulsion was investigated. It was indicated that improvements in the areas of stability, energy efficiency, reliability, and electrode erosion are necessary to obtain a useful device. A water-cooled arcjet simulator was tested to investigate both the energy loss mechanisms at the electrodes and the stability of different conventional arcjet configurations in the presence of a vortex flow field. It is shown that in certain configurations only 25 to 30% of the input energy is lost to the electrodes. It is also shown that vortex stabilization is not difficult to obtain in many cases at the flow rates used and that a careful starting procedure is effective in minimizing electrode damage
Stereoisomer libraries: Total synthesis of all 16 stereoisomers of the pine sawfly sex pheromone by a fluorous mixture-synthesis approach
All 16 stereoisomers of the sex pheromone of pine sawfly (3,7,11-trimethylundecanol propanoate ester) have been synthesized on a 10- to 20-mg scale by a split-parallel fluorous mixture-synthesis approach. Spectral data obtained for all 32 compounds (16 alcohols and the corresponding propionates) matched well with published data, thereby validating the fluorous-tag encoding of diastereoisomers. This fluorous-tag encoding method is recommended for the efficient synthesis of multiple stereoisomers for spectroscopic studies, biological tests, or other structure-function relationships
Electric Propulsion Options for 10 kW Class Earth-Space Missions
Five and 10 kW ion and arcjet propulsion system options for a near-term space demonstration experiment were evaluated. Analyses were conducted to determine first-order propulsion system performance and system component mass estimates. Overall mission performance of the electric propulsion systems was quantified in terms of the maximum thrusting time, total impulse, and velocity increment capability available when integrated onto a generic spacecraft under fixed mission model assumptions. Maximum available thrusting times for the ion-propelled spacecraft options, launched on a DELTA 2 6920 vehicle, range from approximately 8,600 hours for a 4-engine 10 kW system to more than 29,600 hours for a single-engine 5 kW system. Maximum total impulse values and maximum delta-v's range from 1.2x10 (exp 7) to 2.1x10 (exp 7) N-s, and 3550 to 6200 m/s, respectively. Maximum available thrusting times for the arcjet propelled spacecraft launched on the DELTA 2 6920 vehicle range from approximately 528 hours for the 6-engine 10 kW hydrazine system to 2328 hours for the single-engine 5 kW system. Maximum total impulse values and maximum delta-v's range from 2.2x10 (exp 6) to 3.6x10 (exp 6) N-s, and approximately 662 to 1072 m/s, respectively
Arcjet thermal characteristics
The performance of water-cooled and radiation cooled arcjet thrusters operating on both 1:2 nitrogen/hydrogen mixtures at 1 to 2 kW and on pure hydrogen at 1 to 4 kW are compared. To investigate the effects of test facility background pressure on performance, data were taken for both thruster operating on nitrogen/hydrogen mixtures at facility background pressures nominally at 0.20 Pa and 20 Pa. It is shown that increasing the background pressure decreased the thruster performance, and simple pressure area corrections alone could not account for observed degradation in performance

The earth, its shape and dimensions were described in early Greek Mythology. Then, it was believed te be an inverted disc supported by a series of pillars in the care of Atlas. About 523 B.C. Pythagoras pointed out to the scientific world that the earth was spherical in shape. It was left to Aristotle in 370 B.C. to prove that the earth was truly a sphere. Eratosthenes, the keeper of the famous library at Alexandria, Egypt, made a serious attempt to determine the earth's circumference.
