    Genetic diversity of Lusitano horse in Brazil using pedigree information

    This study aimed to evaluate population parameters and to describe the genetic diversity of the Lusitano breed in Brazil using pedigree data. Two populations were evaluated: total population (TP) containing 18,922 animals, and reference population (RP) composed of a part of TP containing 8,329 animals, representing the last generation. The generation interval (10.1 ± 5.1 years) was in the range for horse populations. Pedigree completeness in RP shows almost 100% filling in the three most recent generations, indicating improvement in the pedigree data and accuracy of the results, and the inbreeding coefficient (4.46%) and average relatedness (5.97%) for RP, indicating control on the part of breeders. The effective population size was 89 (TP) and 90 (RP). The effective number of founders (fe) were 33 and 29, effective number of ancestors (fa) were 30 and 26, and effective number of founder genomes (fg) were 19 and 15 for TP and RP, respectively, indicating a reduction of genetic variability in the last generations. The total number of ancestors that explains 100% of the genetic diversity in the Lusitano breed in Brazil was 427 (TP) and 341 (RP). The reproductive parameters, probabilities of gene origin showing loss of variability in the last generations, and the genetic contributions of ancestors suggest the need to monitor genetic diversity over time in breeding programs to allow control of the next generations and to increase their variability.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    With the modernization and miniaturization of equipment and systems toincrease the overall efficiency in smaller spaces, new cooling solutions needto be developed. Microfluidic in the last decades becomes a new way to getthis. Nanofluids are used to attend this demand to optimize efficiency, withtheir improved thermohydraulic properties, especially different thermalconductivities. To determine the advantages of using a nanofluid for thermalexchange, the properties, parameters and modelling will be presented, and thedifferential equations necessary to obtain the results. In that sense, the basictheory of fluid mechanics and heat transfer, through the Navier-Stokes andConvection-Diffusion equation, is used in the two-dimensional steady-stateformulation. Slip boundary conditions for the velocity field. Constant heat fluxand constant temperature at the surface are used for the temperature field,initially without the flow’s microscale effects. The external flow over a flatplate and internal flow between parallel plates will be studied. Considering alaminar flow, with the base fluid being water and engine oil, with variousvolumetric fractions of Single Wall and Multiple Wall Carbon Nanotubes. Todetermine the results and create the comparative graphs, the WolframMathematica v.11 software will be used for solving the remaining partialdifferential equations

    Persistence of Inflammatory Response to Intense Exercise in Diabetic Rats

    In this study we evaluated the onset and resolution of inflammation in control and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats subjected to a single session of intense exercise. The following measurements were carried out prior to, immediately after, and 2 and 24 hours after exercise: plasma levels of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, CINC-2α/β, MIP-3α, and IL-6), immunoglobulins (IgA and IgM), acute phase proteins (CRP and C3), and creatine kinase (CK) activity. We also examined the occurrence of macrophage death by measurements of macrophages necrosis (loss of membrane integrity) and DNA fragmentation. An increase was observed in the concentration of IL-1β (3.3-fold) and TNF-α (2.0-fold) and in the proportion of necrotic macrophages (4.5-fold) in diabetic rats 24 hours after exercise, while the control group showed basal measurements. Twenty-four hours after the exercise, serum CK activity was elevated in diabetic rats but not in control animals. We concluded that lesion and inflammations resulting from intense exercise were greater and lasted longer in diabetic animals than in nondiabetic control rats

    Glutamine: Metabolism and immune function, supplementation and clinical translation

In health and disease, the rate of glutamine consumption by immune cells is similar or greater than glucose. For instance, in vitro and in vivo studies have determined that glutamine is an essential nutrient for lymphocyte proliferation and cytokine production, macrophage phagocytic plus secretory activities, and neutrophil bacterial killing. Glutamine release to the circulation and availability is mainly controlled by key metabolic organs, such as the gut, liver, and skeletal muscles. During catabolic/hypercatabolic situations glutamine can become essential for metabolic function, but its availability may be compromised due to the impairment of homeostasis in the inter-tissue metabolism of amino acids. For this reason, glutamine is currently part of clinical nutrition supplementation protocols and/or recommended for immune suppressed individuals. However, in a wide range of catabolic/hypercatabolic situations (e.g., ill/critically ill, post-trauma, sepsis, exhausted athletes), it is currently difficult to determine whether glutamine supplementation (oral/enteral or parenteral) should be recommended based on the amino acid plasma/bloodstream concentration (also known as glutaminemia). Although the beneficial immune-based effects of glutamine supplementation are already established, many questions and evidence for positive in vivo outcomes still remain to be presented. Therefore, this paper provides an integrated review of how glutamine metabolism in key organs is important to cells of the immune system. We also discuss glutamine metabolism and action, and important issues related to the effects of glutamine supplementation in catabolic situations

    Metabolic fate of glutamine in lymphocytes, macrophages and neutrophils

    Eric Newsholmes laboratory was the first to show glutamine utilization by lymphocytes and macrophages. Recently, we have found that neutrophils also utilize glutamine. This amino acid has been shown to play a role in lymphocyte proliferation, cytokine production by lymphocytes and macrophages and phagocytosis and superoxide production by macrophages and neutrophils. Knowledge of the metabolic fate of glutamine in these cells is important for the understanding of the role and function of this amino acid in the maintenance of the proliferative, phagocytic and secretory capacities of these cells. Glutamine and glucose are poorly oxidized by these cells and might produce important precursors for DNA, RNA, protein and lipid synthesis. The high rate of glutamine utilization and its importance in such cells have raised the question as to the source of this glutamine, which, according to current evidence, appears to be muscle

The aim of this study was to evaluate the ventilation system in solid -wall broiler houses using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The research was carried out in the city of Amparo - SP (Brazil). The facility consisted of a broiler house enclosed by masonry sidewalls with tunnel ventilation equipped with exhaust fans (air outlet) and cooling pads (air inlet). The following variables were collected: wind speed and dry bulb temperature over 27 equidistant points inside the house at bird height (0.30 m above the floor), wind speed in inlet cooling pad, and static pressure in the outlet (exhaust fans) as a boundary condition. The data were monitored at the most critical time of the day 2 pm during the final rearing stage in summer.     Crescimento dos vales do Tietê e Paraná: um enfoque de estoques de capitais

    The study aimed at identifying factors limiting the Tietê and Paraná valleys economic growth. Specifically, it analyzed the importance of the capital stocks for economic growth of these and the other counties in São Paulo State. Nine factors were generated by Principal Components Method to represent the capital stocks and were denominated: Human Capital I; Physical Capital; Social Capital I; Human Capital II; Financial Capital I; Social Capital II; Natural Capital I; Financial Capital II; Natural Capital II. The percentage of the total variance explained by each stock of capital was 19.5% (human); 8.3% (social); 6.0% (financial); 5.9% (physical), and 4.8% (natural). The study indicated that there are two different groups concerning the income index in the Estate of São Paulo and they must not be considered together. Linear regressions were adjusted with these factors explaining the income index that is part of the Human Development Index (HDI). Social Capital I (Associationism) was not in the solution in any group. The variable created to differentiate municipalities located close the rivers (dummy) did not enter the equations.
