    Two-component radiation model of the sonoluminescing bubble

    Based on the experimental data from Weninger, Putterman & Barber, Phys. Rev. (E), 54, R2205 (1996), we offer an alternative interpretation of their experimetal results. A model of sonoluminescing bubble which proposes that the electromagnetic radiation originates from two sources: the isotropic black body or bramsstrahlung emitting core and dipole radiation-emitting shell of accelerated electrons driven by the liquid-bubble interface is outlined.Comment: 5 pages Revtex, submitted to Phys.     An air bubble trapped in water by an oscillating acoustic field undergoes either radial or nonspherical pulsations depending on the strength of the forcing pressure. Two different instability mechanisms (the Rayleigh--Taylor instability and parametric instability) cause deviations from sphericity.     Backlund transformations for many-body systems related to KdV

    We present Backlund transformations (BTs) with parameter for certain classical integrable n-body systems, namely the many-body generalised Henon-Heiles, Garnier and Neumann systems. Our construction makes use of the fact that all these systems may be obtained as particular reductions (stationary or restricted flows) of the KdV hierarchy; alternatively they may be considered as examples of the reduced sl(2) Gaudin magnet. The BTs provide exact time-discretizations of the original (continuous) systems, preserving the Lax matrix and hence all integrals of motion, and satisfy the spectrality property with respect to the Backlund parameter.Comment: LaTeX2e, 8 page

    Differences in formal and informal sports participation at regional level in England

    Purpose: The aim of the paper is to provide a regional approach to analyse sports participation in two different contexts: organised/formal versus non-organised/informal participation, using the England's Active People Survey (APS) national dataset. Method: We have estimated two models: first, a general model to explain differences in regional informal and formal participation rates; second, an econometric model dealing with formal participation at a regular frequency. Results: The results emphasise the different roles played by some correlates depending on the context of sports participation under study. Only economic and cultural variables seem to have a general influence throughout all the sports participation contexts. The results reinforce the role played by sport supply and sport funding in some sports participation levels, offering interesting implications for sport policy. The urban environment, for example, appears to be positively related to the transition from informal to formal sport participation. Conclusions: The distinct analysis of the sports participation contexts provides the opportunity to evaluate ways of boosting that participation as well as to suggest some interesting policy implications towards this aim. For example, sporting infrastructure is only influential for the transition from non-participation to formal participation, implying that in general the key question about sport funding and supply is not the amount of funds but rather the direction and aims of sport policy. Finally, the paper offers some explanations about the gender inequality detected in some forms of sports participation.     Investigation of transition frequencies of two acoustically coupled bubbles using a direct numerical simulation technique

    The theoretical results regarding the ``transition frequencies'' of two acoustically interacting bubbles have been verified numerically. The theory provided by Ida [Phys. Lett. A 297 (2002) 210] predicted the existence of three transition frequencies per bubble, each of which has the phase difference of π/2\pi /2 between a bubble's pulsation and the external sound field, while previous theories predicted only two natural frequencies which cause such phase shifts. Namely, two of the three transition frequencies correspond to the natural frequencies, while the remaining does not. In a subsequent paper [M. Ida, Phys. Rev. E 67 (2003) 056617], it was shown theoretically that transition frequencies other than the natural frequencies may cause the sign reversal of the secondary Bjerknes force acting between pulsating bubbles. In the present study, we employ a direct numerical simulation technique that uses the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a surface-tension term as the governing equations to investigate the transition frequencies of two coupled bubbles by observing their pulsation amplitudes and directions of translational motion, both of which change as the driving frequency changes. The numerical results reproduce the recent theoretical predictions, validating the existence of the transition frequencies not corresponding to the natural frequency.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, in pres

    Generalization of the Darboux transformation and generalized harmonic oscillators

    The Darbroux transformation is generalized for time-dependent Hamiltonian systems which include a term linear in momentum and a time-dependent mass. The formalism for the NN-fold application of the transformation is also established, and these formalisms are applied for a general quadratic system (a generalized harmonic oscillator) and a quadratic system with an inverse-square interaction up to N=2. Among the new features found, it is shown, for the general quadratic system, that the shape of potential difference between the original system and the transformed system could oscillate according to a classical solution, which is related to the existence of coherent states in the system

    Evidence for a Novel Endometrioid Carcinogenic Sequence in the Fallopian Tube With Unique Beta-Catenin Expression

    Epithelial proliferations in the fallopian tube have been characterized by some as stem cell outgrowths (SCOUTs) and divided into type I and type II. Type II SCOUTs exhibit diffuse cellular beta-catenin nuclear staining (β-catenin+), implying a CTNNB1 mutation. SCOUTs are more common in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women and are associated with ovarian cancer but have not been linked directly to malignancy. We analyzed type II SCOUTs in various gynecologic conditions, and searched for endometrioid atypical hyperplasias (tubal endometrioid intraepithelial neoplasia) or adenocarcinomas in the tube. β-catenin+ SCOUT frequency in cases of neoplasia was 66.7% per case and 30.7% per nonfimbrial cross-section for uterine endometrioid carcinomas versus 25% and 13.3% for controls, respectively (P=0.02 and 0.09). Multiple (3 or more) β-catenin+ SCOUTs in a single section were uncommon; 6 of 9 were associated with a carcinoma or proliferative lesion in the endometrium. Tubal endometrioid intraepithelial neoplasia/atypical hyperplasia displayed complex growth, including focal cribriform growth patterns and squamous morules. Two cases of type II SCOUTs associated with tubal endometrioid intraepithelial neoplasia/atypical hyperplasia and/or adenocarcinomas in the fallopian tube were identified, both of which coexisted with a separate endometrioid adenocarcinoma, one with bilateral ovarian endometrioid adenocarcinomas. Both benign and neoplastic tubal lesions were β-catenin+. This report is the first to link components of a unique β-catenin+ endometrioid carcinogenic sequence in the fallopian tube. It further emphasizes the multifocal nature of endometrioid neoplasia in the female genital tract and poses questions regarding the frequency and biologic underpinnings of β-catenin+ proliferations in the oviduct
