Nonequilibrium work on spin glasses in longitudinal and transverse fields
We derive a number of exact relations between equilibrium and nonequilibrium
quantities for spin glasses in external fields using the Jarzynski equality and
gauge symmetry. For randomly-distributed longitudinal fields, a lower bound is
established for the work done on the system in nonequilibrium processes, and
identities are proven to relate equilibrium and nonequilibrium quantities. In
the case of uniform transverse fields, identities are proven between physical
quantities and exponentiated work done to the system at different parts of the
phase diagram with the context of quantum annealing in mind. Additional
relations are given, which relate the exponentiated work in quantum and
simulated (classical) annealing. It is also suggested that the Jarzynski
equality may serve as a guide to develop a method to perform quantum annealing
under non-adiabatic conditions.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, submitted to JPS
Multi-core job submission and grid resource scheduling for ATLAS AthenaMP
AthenaMP is the multi-core implementation of the ATLAS software framework and allows the efficient sharing of memory pages between multiple threads of execution. This has now been validated for production and delivers a significant reduction on the overall application memory footprint with negligible CPU overhead. Before AthenaMP can be routinely run on the LHC Computing Grid it must be determined how the computing resources available to ATLAS can best exploit the notable improvements delivered by switching to this multi-process model. A study into the effectiveness and scalability of AthenaMP in a production environment will be presented. Best practices for configuring the main LRMS implementations currently used by grid sites will be identified in the context of multi-core scheduling optimisation
The length of time's arrow
An unresolved problem in physics is how the thermodynamic arrow of time
arises from an underlying time reversible dynamics. We contribute to this issue
by developing a measure of time-symmetry breaking, and by using the work
fluctuation relations, we determine the time asymmetry of recent single
molecule RNA unfolding experiments. We define time asymmetry as the
Jensen-Shannon divergence between trajectory probability distributions of an
experiment and its time-reversed conjugate. Among other interesting properties,
the length of time's arrow bounds the average dissipation and determines the
difficulty of accurately estimating free energy differences in nonequilibrium
experiments
Microtexture and Nanoindentation Study of Delamination Cracking in Al-Cu-Li-X Alloys
Commercial Al-Li alloys have strength and weight advantages over non-Li aluminum alloys. The fracture behavior of these alloys is unusual and has limited their use. The fracture mode, described as delamination, is intergranular, along the broad grain boundaries parallel to the rolling plane of the plate. Microtexture analyses have shown that delaminations occur along boundaries with greater than 30 misorientation. However, it was observed that relatively few of the high angle boundaries exhibited this behavior. Some grains of the retained deformation texture show high internal misorientation, which is a measure of stored strain energy. Delamination tends to occur between these grains and adjacent, recrystallized grains. Nanoindentation studies indicate a higher hardness for the high internal misorientation grains. These results suggest that the delamination could be reduced by processing the alloys to minimize grain-to-grain property disparities
The expansion of thymopoiesis in neonatal mice is dependent on expression of high mobility group a 2 protein (Hmga2).
Cell number in the mouse thymus increases steadily during the first two weeks after birth. It then plateaus and begins to decline by seven weeks after birth. The factors governing these dramatic changes in cell production are not well understood. The data herein correlate levels of High mobility group A 2 protein (Hmga2) expression with these temporal changes in thymopoiesis. Hmga2 is expressed at high levels in murine fetal and neonatal early T cell progenitors (ETP), which are the most immature intrathymic precursors, and becomes almost undetectable in these progenitors after 5 weeks of age. Hmga2 expression is critical for the initial, exponential expansion of thymopoiesis, as Hmga2 deficient mice have a deficit of ETPs within days after birth, and total thymocyte number is repressed compared to wild type littermates. Finally, our data raise the possibility that similar events occur in humans, because Hmga2 expression is high in human fetal thymic progenitors and falls in these cells during early infancy
Measurements of a low temperature mechanical dissipation peak in a single layer of Ta2O5 doped with TiO2
Thermal noise arising from mechanical dissipation in oxide coatings is a
major limitation to many precision measurement systems, including optical
frequency standards, high resolution optical spectroscopy and interferometric
gravity wave detectors. Presented here are measurements of dissipation as a
function of temperature between 7 K and 290 K in ion-beam sputtered Ta2O5 doped
with TiO2, showing a loss peak at 20 K. Analysis of the peak provides the first
evidence of the source of dissipation in doped Ta2O5 coatings, leading to
possibilities for the reduction of thermal noise effects

Long non-coding RNA profiling of human lymphoid progenitor cells reveals transcriptional divergence of B cell and T cell lineages.
To elucidate the transcriptional 'landscape' that regulates human lymphoid commitment during postnatal life, we used RNA sequencing to assemble the long non-coding transcriptome across human bone marrow and thymic progenitor cells spanning the earliest stages of B lymphoid and T lymphoid specification. Over 3,000 genes encoding previously unknown long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) were revealed through the analysis of these rare populations. Lymphoid commitment was characterized by lncRNA expression patterns that were highly stage specific and were more lineage specific than those of protein-coding genes. Protein-coding genes co-expressed with neighboring lncRNA genes showed enrichment for ontologies related to lymphoid differentiation. The exquisite cell-type specificity of global lncRNA expression patterns independently revealed new developmental relationships among the earliest progenitor cells in the human bone marrow and thymus
A feasibility, randomised controlled trial of a complex breathlessness intervention in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (BREEZE-IPF): study protocol
Introduction Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic and progressive lung disease that causes breathlessness and cough that worsen over time, limiting daily activities and negatively impacting quality of life. Although treatments are now available that slow the rate of lung function decline, trials of these treatments have failed to show improvement in symptoms or quality of life. There is an immediate unmet need for evidenced-based interventions that improve patients' symptom burden and make a difference to everyday living. This study aims to assess the feasibility of conducting a definitive randomised controlled trial of a holistic, complex breathlessness intervention in people with IPF.
Methods and analysis The trial is a two-centre, randomised controlled feasibility trial of a complex breathlessness intervention compared with usual care in patients with IPF. 50 participants will be recruited from secondary care IPF clinics and randomised 1:1 to either start the intervention within 1 week of randomisation (fast-track group) or to receive usual care for 8 weeks before receiving the intervention (wait-list group). Participants will remain in the study for a total of 16 weeks. Outcome measures will be feasibility outcomes, including recruitment, retention, acceptability and fidelity of the intervention. Clinical outcomes will be measured to inform outcome selection and sample size calculation for a definitive trial.
Ethics and dissemination Yorkshire and The Humber – Bradford Leeds Research Ethics Committee approved the study protocol (REC 18/YH/0147). Results of the main trial and all secondary end-points will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal
Microscopic analysis of the microscopic reversibility in quantum systems
We investigate the robustness of the microscopic reversibility in open
quantum systems which is discussed by Monnai [arXiv:1106.1982 (2011)]. We
derive an exact relation between the forward transition probability and the
reversed transition probability in the case of a general measurement basis. We
show that the microscopic reversibility acquires some corrections in general
and discuss the physical meaning of the corrections. Under certain processes,
some of the correction terms vanish and we numerically confirmed that the
remaining correction term becomes negligible; the microscopic reversibility
almost holds even when the local system cannot be regarded as macroscopic.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure
The geometry of thermodynamic control
A deeper understanding of nonequilibrium phenomena is needed to reveal the
principles governing natural and synthetic molecular machines. Recent work has
shown that when a thermodynamic system is driven from equilibrium then, in the
linear response regime, the space of controllable parameters has a Riemannian
geometry induced by a generalized friction tensor. We exploit this geometric
insight to construct closed-form expressions for minimal-dissipation protocols
for a particle diffusing in a one dimensional harmonic potential, where the
spring constant, inverse temperature, and trap location are adjusted
simultaneously. These optimal protocols are geodesics on the Riemannian
manifold, and reveal that this simple model has a surprisingly rich geometry.
We test these optimal protocols via a numerical implementation of the
Fokker-Planck equation and demonstrate that the friction tensor arises
naturally from a first order expansion in temporal derivatives of the control
parameters, without appealing directly to linear response theory
