    Economic and social impacts of Integrated Aquaculture-Agriculture technologies in Bangladesh

    This study estimated the adoption rate of integrated aquaculture-agriculture (IAA) technologies in Bangladesh and their impact on poverty and fish and food consumption in adopting households. We used a novel, simulation-based approach to impact assessment called Tradeoff Analysis for Multi-Dimensional Impact Assessment (TOA-MD). We used the TOA-MD model to demonstrate how it is possible to use available data to estimate adoption rates in relevant populations, and to quantify impacts on distributional outcomes such as poverty and food security, thus demonstrating ex ante the potential for further investment in technology dissemination. The analysis used baseline and end-of-project survey data from WorldFish-implemented Development of Sustainable Aquaculture Project (DSAP), promoting IAA. This dataset was used to simulate adoption and assess its impacts on poverty and food security in the target population. We found that, if adopted, IAA had a significant positive impact on reducing poverty and improving food security and income

    Comparing Active Duty and Transitional Military Veteran Students\u27 Evaluation of Online Distance Higher Education Learning Environments

    Active duty service members’ participation in non-traditional higher education designed for veterans and other non-traditional adults can be uniquely impacted by their unpredictable military schedules, geographic instability, and frequently limited access to technology needed to complete course requirements while in remote areas. The purpose of this study was to examine whether active duty undergraduates differed significantly regarding their attitudes toward distance learning and their perceptions of the distance learning environment compared to veterans and non-traditional adults. This causal comparative study examined adult students’ perceptions after participating in 200-level undergraduate education delivered online at a private four-year institution based on their current status as active duty, veteran, or non-military non-traditional student using the Distance Education Learning Environment Survey. ANOVA was used to compare overall enjoyment of distance learning. MANOVA examined differences among groups regarding instructor support, personal relevance, and student autonomy. Participants included 203 online undergraduates who completed a 200-level general education course during the Spring 2017 semester. There was no significant difference between active duty members and veterans regarding enjoyment of distance learning, and no significant differences among groups for instructor support, personal relevance, and student autonomy. Based on the literature, there is a need to develop an instrument focused specifically on evaluating institutional and programmatic barriers. A mixed-methods approach that builds on existing literature regarding issues faced by active duty military students could result in the development of such an instrument

    In this article, a model was developed in which the quantity and timing of input and harvest decisions are endogenous. The endogenous timing model allows all of the information about input and harvest behavior to be utilized, and it provides a basis for linking econometric production analysis to the time-specific analyses in other scientific disciplines used to assess the environmental or human health impacts of agricultural production practices. The case study of fungicide use on Ecuadorian potatoes was conducted with a unique data set containing detailed information on both quantity and timing of input use.     Family Type and Familism in Contemporary Appalachia

    Residents of Appalachia have long been considered isolated, old-fashioned, and traditional when compared with the rest of the United States. Such terms as yesterday\u27s people have been utilized to describe present-day Appalachians, and romanticized ideas abound as to the contemporary Appalachian family. It is still quite often pictured as extended and highly familistic. This research consisted of a study of 675 rural families throughout the state of West Virginia, which is the only state entirely within the Appalachian area. The interviewees tended to live in nuclear families. They did not display the expected degree of familism. Familism is related to sex, race, employment status, and church attendance
