    Contact Theory as a Framework for Experiential Activities as Diversity Education: An Exploratory Study

    Participation in experiential education is said to enhance people\u27s appreciation for diversity. This article reports on a study that found significant changes in participants\u27 attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors following a nonformal diversity education program using adventure-based and community-service activities. Additionally, hypothesized program conditions, as outlined by contact theory, were significantly predictive of outcomes, although majority and minority participants differed on their perceptions of these conditions. These findings suggest that experiential activities may be considered a viable approach to diversity education in nonformal settings, assuming key conditions are met. Implications for practice and directions for future research are discussed

    Multifrequency Observations of One of the Largest Supernova Remnants in the Local Group of Galaxies, LMC - SNR J0450-709

    We present the results of new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of one of the largest supernova remnants, SNR J0450-709, in the Local Group of galaxies. We found that this Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) ob ject exhibits a typical morphology of an old supernova remnant (SNR) with diameter D=102x75+-1 pc and radio spectral index alpha=-0.43+-0.06.     AXJ1749+684: a narrow emission-line galaxy with a flat X-ray spectrum

    We report the serendipitous detection of an X-ray source, AXJ1749+684, with the ASCA Gas Imaging Spectrometer. AXJ1749+684 is identified with a LINER/starburst-type spiral galaxy KUG 1750+683A at a redshift z = 0.05. It has a hard X-ray spectrum, consistent with that of the X-ray background (XRB) in the 1-10 keV band. Despite the optical classification, the X-ray luminosity cannot be explained by starburst activity. Combined with spatial variations in the optical emission line ratios, this suggests the presence of an obscured Seyfert nucleus embedded within a starforming galaxy. Similar behaviour could explain the ambiguous properties of the faint narrow-line X-ray galaxies (NLXGs) emerging from deep X-ray surveys.Comment: MNRAS Letters in press, 6 pages, 7 figures in MNRAS LaTex styl

    Particle relabelling transformations in elastodynamics

    The motion of a self-gravitating hyperelastic body is described through a time-dependent mapping from a reference body into physical space, and its material properties are determined by a referential density and strain-energy function defined relative to the reference body. Points within the reference body do not have a direct physical meaning, but instead act as particle labels that could be assigned in different ways. We use Hamilton’s principle to determine how the referential density and strain-energy functions transform when the particle labels are changed, and describe an associated “particle relabelling symmetry”. We apply these results to linearised elastic wave propagation, and discuss their implications for seismological inverse problems. In particular, we show that the effects of boundary topography on elastic wave propagation can be mapped exactly into volumetric heterogeneity while preserving the form of the equations of motion.     Household Portfolios and Financial Preparedness for Retirement

    Using a lifecycle model of consumption, saving and portfolio choice combined with linked survey and administrative data on wealth and lifetime earnings we evaluate measures of retirement preparedness. We estimate heterogeneous discount factors for households and compare the estimates of their patience to their replacement rates { the simple measure of- ten used to evaluate the adequacy of retirement savings. We find first that the specification of the model’s asset structure matters quantitatively for preference parameter estimates { households appear to be much more patient when they are assumed to have access only to a risk-free asset compared to when we account for the fact that much of their wealth is stored in higher-return tax-advantaged private pensions and in housing. Second we find that only the most patient households achieve the replacement rates out of final earnings that are often recommended by policy-makers and industry as sensible benchmarks for retirement preparedness. Notwithstanding this, we find that even quite impatient households in the population we study achieve high replacement rates out of lifetime average income { a more sensible summary measure of preparedness for retirement

    Understanding the tsunami with a simple model

    In this paper, we use the approximation of shallow water waves (Margaritondo G 2005 Eur. J. Phys. 26 401) to understand the behaviour of a tsunami in a variable depth. We deduce the shallow water wave equation and the continuity equation that must be satisfied when a wave encounters a discontinuity in the sea depth. A short explanation about how the tsunami hit the west coast of India is given based on the refraction phenomenon. Our procedure also includes a simple numerical calculation suitable for undergraduate students in physics and engineering
