Approach to equilibrium for a class of random quantum models of infinite range
We consider random generalizations of a quantum model of infinite range
introduced by Emch and Radin. The generalization allows a neat extension from
the class of absolutely summable lattice potentials to the optimal class
of square summable potentials first considered by Khanin and Sinai and
generalised by van Enter and van Hemmen. The approach to equilibrium in the
case of a Gaussian distribution is proved to be faster than for a Bernoulli
distribution for both short-range and long-range lattice potentials. While
exponential decay to equilibrium is excluded in the nonrandom case, it is
proved to occur for both short and long range potentials for Gaussian
distributions, and for potentials of class in the Bernoulli case. Open

The needle in the haystack - Where to look for more isolated cooling neutron stars
Context: Isolated cooling neutron stars with thermal X-ray emission remain
rarely detected objects despite many searches investigating the ROSAT data.
Aims: We simulate the population of close-by young cooling neutron stars to
explain the current observational results. Given the inhomogeneity of the
neutron star distribution on the sky it is particularly interesting to identify
promising sky regions with respect to on-going and future searches.
Methods: Applying a population synthesis model the inhomogeneity of the
progenitor distribution and the inhomogeneity of the X-ray absorbing
interstellar medium are considered for the first time. The total number of
observable neutron stars is derived with respect to ROSAT count rates. In
addition, we present sky maps of neutron star locations and discuss age and
distance distributions of the simulated neutron stars. Implications for future
searches are discussed.
Results: With our advanced model we can successfully explain the observed
logN - logS distribution of close-by neutron stars. Cooling neutron stars will
be most abundant in the directions of rich OB associations. New candidates are
expected to be identified behind the Gould Belt, in particular in the
Cygnus-Cepheus region. They are expected to be on average younger and then
hotter than the known population of isolated cooling neutron stars. In
addition, we propose to use data on runaway stars to search for more

Preparedness of emergency departments in northwest England for managing chemical incidents: a structured interview survey
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A number of significant chemical incidents occur in the UK each year and may require Emergency Departments (EDs) to receive and manage contaminated casualties. Previously UK EDs have been found to be under-prepared for this, but since October 2005 acute hospital Trusts have had a statutory responsibility to maintain decontamination capacity. We aimed to evaluate the level of preparedness of Emergency Departments in North West England for managing chemical incidents.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A face-to-face semi-structured interview was carried out with the Nurse Manager or a nominated deputy in all 18 Emergency Departments in the Region.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>16/18 departments had a written chemical incident plan but only 7 had the plan available at interview. All had a designated decontamination area but only 11 felt that they were adequately equipped. 12/18 had a current training programme for chemical incident management and 3 had no staff trained in decontamination. 13/18 could contain contaminated water from casualty decontamination and 6 could provide shelter for casualties before decontamination.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We have identified major inconsistencies in the preparedness of North West Emergency Departments for managing chemical incidents. Nationally recognized standards on incident planning, facilities, equipment and procedures need to be agreed and implemented with adequate resources. Issues of environmental safety and patient dignity and comfort should also be addressed.</p
4f-spin dynamics in La(2-x-y)Sr(x)Nd(y)CuO(4)
We have performed inelastic magnetic neutron scattering experiments on
La(2-x-y)Sr(x)Nd(y)CuO(4) in order to study the Nd 4f-spin dynamics at low
energies. In all samples we find at high temperatures a quasielastic line
(Lorentzian) with a line width which decreases on lowering the temperature. The
temperature dependence of the quasielastic line width Gamma/2(T) can be
explained with an Orbach-process, i.e. a relaxation via the coupling between
crystal field excitations and phonons. At low temperatures the Nd-4f magnetic
response S(Q,omega) correlates with the electronic properties of the
CuO(2)-layers. In the insulator La(2-y)Nd(y)CuO(4) the quasielastic line
vanishes below 80 K and an inelastic excitation occurs. This directly indicates
the splitting of the Nd3+ ground state Kramers doublet due to the static
antiferromagnetic order of the Cu moments. In La(1.7-x)Sr(x)Nd(0.3)CuO(4) with
x = 0.12, 0.15 and La(1.4-x)Sr(x)Nd(0.6)CuO(4) with x = 0.1, 0.12, 0.15, 0.18
superconductivity is strongly suppressed. In these compounds we observe a
temperature independent broad quasielastic line of Gaussian shape below T about
30 K. This suggests a distribution of various internal fields on different Nd
sites and is interpreted in the frame of the stripe model. In
La(1.8-y)Sr(0.2)Nd(y)CuO(4) (y = 0.3, 0.6) such a quasielastic broadening is

Mutations in protocadherin 15 and cadherin 23 affect tip links and mechanotransduction in mammalian sensory hair cells
Immunocytochemical studies have shown that protocadherin-15 (PCDH15) and cadherin-23 (CDH23) are associated with tip links, structures thought to gate the mechanotransducer channels of hair cells in the sensory epithelia of the inner ear. The present report describes functional and structural analyses of hair cells from Pcdh15av3J (av3J), Pcdh15av6J (av6J) and Cdh23v2J (v2J) mice. The av3J and v2J mice carry point mutations that are predicted to introduce premature stop codons in the transcripts for Pcdh15 and Cdh23, respectively, and av6J mice have an in-frame deletion predicted to remove most of the 9th cadherin ectodomain from PCDH15. Severe disruption of hair-bundle morphology is observed throughout the early-postnatal cochlea in av3J/av3J and v2J/v2J mice. In contrast, only mild-to-moderate bundle disruption is evident in the av6J/av6J mice. Hair cells from av3J/av3J mice are unaffected by aminoglycosides and fail to load with [3H]-gentamicin or FM1-43, compounds that permeate the hair cell's mechanotransducer channels. In contrast, hair cells from av6J/av6J mice load with both FM1-43 and [3H]-gentamicin, and are aminoglycoside sensitive. Transducer currents can be recorded from hair cells of all three mutants but are reduced in amplitude in all mutants and have abnormal directional sensitivity in the av3J/av3J and v2J/v2J mutants. Scanning electron microscopy of early postnatal cochlear hair cells reveals tip-link like links in av6J/av6J mice, substantially reduced numbers of links in the av3J/av3J mice and virtually none in the v2J/v2J mice. Analysis of mature vestibular hair bundles reveals an absence of tip links in the av3J/av3J and v2J/v2J mice and a reduction in av6J/av6J mice. These results therefore provide genetic evidence consistent with PCDH15 and CDH23 being part of the tip-link complex and necessary for normal mechanotransduction

Conformational Dynamics of Single pre-mRNA Molecules During \u3cem\u3eIn Vitro\u3c/em\u3e Splicing
The spliceosome is a complex small nuclear RNA (snRNA)-protein machine that removes introns from pre-mRNAs via two successive phosphoryl transfer reactions. The chemical steps are isoenergetic, yet splicing requires at least eight RNA-dependent ATPases responsible for substantial conformational rearrangements. To comprehensively monitor pre-mRNA conformational dynamics, we developed a strategy for single-molecule FRET (smFRET) that uses a small, efficiently spliced yeast pre-mRNA, Ubc4, in which donor and acceptor fluorophores are placed in the exons adjacent to the 5′ and 3′ splice sites. During splicing in vitro, we observed a multitude of generally reversible time-and ATP-dependent conformational transitions of individual pre-mRNAs. The conformational dynamics of branchpoint and 3′-splice site mutants differ from one another and from wild type. Because all transitions are reversible, spliceosome assembly appears to be occurring close to thermal equilibrium
Search for CP Violation in the Decay Z -> b (b bar) g
About three million hadronic decays of the Z collected by ALEPH in the years
1991-1994 are used to search for anomalous CP violation beyond the Standard
Model in the decay Z -> b \bar{b} g. The study is performed by analyzing
angular correlations between the two quarks and the gluon in three-jet events
and by measuring the differential two-jet rate. No signal of CP violation is
found. For the combinations of anomalous CP violating couplings, and , limits of \hat{h}_b < 0.59h^{\ast}_{b} < 3.02$ are given at 95\% CL.Comment: 8 pages, 1 postscript figure, uses here.sty, epsfig.st
