4-Dimensional BF Theory as a Topological Quantum Field Theory
Starting from a Lie group G whose Lie algebra is equipped with an invariant
nondegenerate symmetric bilinear form, we show that 4-dimensional BF theory
with cosmological term gives rise to a TQFT satisfying a generalization of
Atiyah's axioms to manifolds equipped with principal G-bundle. The case G =
GL(4,R) is especially interesting because every 4-manifold is then naturally
equipped with a principal G-bundle, namely its frame bundle. In this case, the
partition function of a compact oriented 4-manifold is the exponential of its
signature, and the resulting TQFT is isomorphic to that constructed by Crane
and Yetter using a state sum model, or by Broda using a surgery presentation of

Must naive realists be relationalists?
Relationalism maintains that perceptual experience involves, as part of its nature, a distinctive kind of conscious perceptual relation between a subject of experience and an object of experience. Together with the claim that perceptual experience is presentational, relationalism is widely believed to be a core aspect of the naive realist outlook on perception. This is a mistake. I argue that naive realism about perception can be upheld without a commitment to relationalism
Magellanic Cloud X-ray Sources: III. Completion of a ROSAT Survey
This paper concludes a series of three papers presenting ROSAT
High-Resolution Imager (HRI) observations of unidentified Einstein and
serendipitous ROSAT X-ray sources in the direction of the Magellanic Clouds.
Accurate positions and fluxes have been measured for these sources. Optical
photometry and spectroscopy were obtained to search for identifications in
order to determine the physical nature of these sources. The present paper
includes new data for 24 objects; identifications are given or confirmed for 30
sources. For six sources optical finding charts showing the X-ray positions are
provided. The results from this program are summarized, showing the populations
of luminous X-ray sources in the Magellanic Clouds are quite different from

Old and New Fields on Super Riemann Surfaces
The ``new fields" or ``superconformal functions" on super Riemann
surfaces introduced recently by Rogers and Langer are shown to coincide with
the Abelian differentials (plus constants), viewed as a subset of the functions
on the associated super Riemann surface. We confirm that, as originally

A detailed analysis of the HD 73526 2:1 resonant planetary system
We present six years of new radial velocity data from the Anglo-Australian and Magellan Telescopes on the HD 73526 2:1 resonant planetary system. We investigate both Keplerian and dynamical ( interacting) fits to these data, yielding four possible configurations for the system. The new data now show that both resonance angles are librating, with amplitudes of 40 degrees and 60 degrees, respectively. We then perform long-term dynamical stability tests to differentiate these solutions, which only differ significantly in the masses of the planets. We show that while there is no clearly preferred system inclination, the dynamical fit with i = 90 degrees provides the best combination of goodness-of-fit and long-term dynamical stability.Peer reviewe
PILOT: a balloon-borne experiment to measure the polarized FIR emission of dust grains in the interstellar medium
Future cosmology space missions will concentrate on measuring the
polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background, which potentially carries
invaluable information about the earliest phases of the evolution of our
universe. Such ambitious projects will ultimately be limited by the sensitivity
of the instrument and by the accuracy at which polarized foreground emission
from our own Galaxy can be subtracted out. We present the PILOT balloon project
which will aim at characterizing one of these foreground sources, the
polarization of the dust continuum emission in the diffuse interstellar medium.
The PILOT experiment will also constitute a test-bed for using multiplexed
bolometer arrays for polarization measurements. We present the results of

HATS-5b: A Transiting hot-Saturn from the HATSouth Survey
We report the discovery of HATS-5b, a transiting hot-Saturn orbiting a G type
star, by the HAT-South survey. HATS-5b has a mass of Mp=0.24 Mj, radius of
Rp=0.91 Rj, and transits its host star with a period of P=4.7634d. The radius
of HATS-5b is consistent with both theoretical and empirical models. The host
star has a V band magnitude of 12.6, mass of 0.94 Msun, and radius of 0.87
Rsun. The relatively high scale height of HATS-5b, and the bright,
photometrically quiet host star, make this planet a favourable target for
future transmission spectroscopy follow-up observations. We reexamine the
correlations in radius, equilibrium temperature, and metallicity of the
close-in gas-giants, and find hot Jupiter-mass planets to exhibit the strongest
dependence between radius and equilibrium temperature. We find no significant
dependence in radius and metallicity for the close-in gas-giant population.Comment: 10 pages, submitted to A
New fields on super Riemann surfaces
A new -dimensional super vector bundle which exists on any super
Riemann surface is described. Cross-sections of this bundle provide a new class
of fields on a super Riemann surface which closely resemble holomorphic
functions on a super Riemann surface, but which (in contrast to the case with
holomorphic functions) form spaces which have a well defined dimension which

An algebraic interpretation of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation
We make a direct connection between the construction of three dimensional
topological state sums from tensor categories and three dimensional quantum
gravity by noting that the discrete version of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation is
exactly the pentagon for the associator of the tensor category, the
Biedenharn-Elliott identity. A crucial role is played by an asymptotic formula
