Short-Term Analysis of Human Dental Pulps After Direct Capping with Portland Cement
This study evaluated the short-term response of human pulp tissue when directly capped with Portland cement. In this series of cases, twenty human third molars that were scheduled for extraction were used. After cavity preparation, pulp exposure was achieved and Portland cement pulp capping was performed. Teeth were extracted after 1, 7, 14 and 21 days following treatment and prepared for histological examination and bacterial detection. Each group had 5 teeth. The results were descriptively analysed. Dentin bridge formation was seen in two teeth with some distance from the material interface (14 and 21 days). Soft inflammatory responses were observed in most of the cases. Bacteria were not disclosed in any specimen. PC exhibited some features of biocompatibility and capability of inducing mineral pulp response in short-term evaluation. The results suggested that PC has a potential to be used as a less expensive pulp capping material in comparison to other pulp capping materials

Programming gene expression with combinatorial promoters
Promoters control the expression of genes in response to one or more transcription factors (TFs). The architecture of a promoter is the arrangement and type of binding sites within it. To understand natural genetic circuits and to design promoters for synthetic biology, it is essential to understand the relationship between promoter function and architecture. We constructed a combinatorial library of random promoter architectures. We characterized 288 promoters in Escherichia coli, each containing up to three inputs from four different TFs. The library design allowed for multiple −10 and −35 boxes, and we observed varied promoter strength over five decades. To further analyze the functional repertoire, we defined a representation of promoter function in terms of regulatory range, logic type, and symmetry. Using these results, we identified heuristic rules for programming gene expression with combinatorial promoters
Jet vetoing and Herwig++
We investigate the simulation of events with gaps between jets with a veto on
additional radiation in the gap in Herwig++. We discover that the
currently-used random treatment of radiation in the parton shower is generating
some unphysical behaviour for wide-angle gluon emission in QCD 2 to 2
scatterings. We explore this behaviour quantitatively by making the same
assumptions as the parton shower in the analytical calculation. We then modify
the parton shower algorithm in order to correct the simulation of QCD

Homogeneous Analysis of the Dust Morphology of Transition Disks Observed with ALMA: Investigating Dust Trapping and the Origin of the Cavities
We analyze the dust morphology of 29 transition disks (TDs) observed with
ALMA at (sub-) millimeter-emission. We perform the analysis in the visibility
plane to characterize the total flux, cavity size, and shape of the ring-like
structure. First, we found that the relation is much
flatter for TDs than the observed trends from samples of class II sources in
different star forming regions. This relation demonstrates that cavities open
in high (dust) mass disks, independent of the stellar mass. The flatness of
this relation contradicts the idea that TDs are a more evolved set of disks.
Two potential reasons (not mutually exclusive) may explain this flat relation:
the emission is optically thick or/and millimeter-sized particles are trapped
in a pressure bump. Second, we discuss our results of the cavity size and ring
width in the context of different physical processes for cavity formation.
Photoevaporation is an unlikely leading mechanism for the origin of the cavity
of any of the targets in the sample. Embedded giant planets or dead zones
remain as potential explanations. Although both models predict correlations
between the cavity size and the ring shape for different stellar and disk
properties, we demonstrate that with the current resolution of the
observations, it is difficult to obtain these correlations. Future observations
with higher angular resolution observations of TDs with ALMA will help to
discern between different potential origins of cavities in TDs
Semiparametric Multivariate Accelerated Failure Time Model with Generalized Estimating Equations
The semiparametric accelerated failure time model is not as widely used as
the Cox relative risk model mainly due to computational difficulties. Recent
developments in least squares estimation and induced smoothing estimating
equations provide promising tools to make the accelerate failure time models
more attractive in practice. For semiparametric multivariate accelerated
failure time models, we propose a generalized estimating equation approach to
account for the multivariate dependence through working correlation structures.
The marginal error distributions can be either identical as in sequential event
settings or different as in parallel event settings. Some regression
coefficients can be shared across margins as needed. The initial estimator is a
rank-based estimator with Gehan's weight, but obtained from an induced
smoothing approach with computation ease. The resulting estimator is consistent
and asymptotically normal, with a variance estimated through a multiplier
resampling method. In a simulation study, our estimator was up to three times
as efficient as the initial estimator, especially with stronger multivariate
dependence and heavier censoring percentage. Two real examples demonstrate the
utility of the proposed method
Gas gangrene and osteomyelitis of the foot in a diabetic patient treated with tea tree oil
Diabetic foot wounds represent a class of chronic non-healing wounds that can lead to the development of soft tissue infections and osteomyelitis. We reviewed the case of a 44-year-old female with a diabetic foot wound who developed gas gangrene while treating her wound with tea tree oil, a naturally derived antibiotic agent. This case report includes images that represent clinical examination and x-ray findings of a patient who required broad-spectrum antibiotics and emergent surgical consultation. Emergency Department (ED) detection of these complications may prevent loss of life or limb in these patients
Paradoxes and Mechanisms for Choice under Risk
Experiments on choice under risk typically involve multiple decisions by individual subjects. The choice of mechanism for selecting decision(s) for payoff is an essential design feature unless subjects isolate each one of the multiple decisions. We report treatments with different payoff mechanisms but the same decision tasks. The data show large differences across mechanisms in subjects’ revealed risk preferences, a clear violation of isolation. We illustrate the importance of these mechanism effects by identifying their implications for classical tests of theories of decision under risk. We discuss theoretical properties of commonly used mechanisms, and new mechanisms introduced herein, in order to clarify which mechanisms are theoretically incentive compatible for which theories. We identify behavioral properties of some mechanisms that can introduce bias in elicited risk preferences – from cross-task contamination – even when the mechanism used is theoretically incentive compatible. We explain that selection of a payoff mechanism is an important component of experimental design in many topic areas including social preferences, public goods, bargaining, and choice under uncertainty and ambiguity as well as experiments on decisions under risk
Superpulsed low-level laser therapy protects skeletal muscle of mdx mice against damage, inflammation and morphological changes delaying dystrophy progression.
Aim: To evaluate the effects of preventive treatment with low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on progression of dystrophy in mdx mice. Methods: Ten animals were randomly divided into 2 experimental groups treated with superpulsed LLLT (904 nm, 15 mW, 700 Hz, 1 J) or placebo-LLLT at one point overlying the tibialis anterior muscle (bilaterally) 5 times per week for 14 weeks (from 6th to 20th week of age). Morphological changes, creatine kinase (CK) activity and mRNA gene expression were assessed in animals at 20th week of age. Results: Animals treated with LLLT showed very few morphological changes in skeletal muscle, with less atrophy and fibrosis than animals treated with placebo-LLLT. CK was significantly lower (p = 0.0203) in animals treated with LLLT (864.70 U.l−1, SEM 226.10) than placebo (1708.00 U.l−1, SEM 184.60). mRNA gene expression of inflammatory markers was significantly decreased by treatment with LLLT (p<0.05): TNF-α (placebo-control = 0.51 µg/µl [SEM 0.12], - LLLT = 0.048 µg/µl [SEM 0.01]), IL-1β (placebo-control = 2.292 µg/µl [SEM 0.74], - LLLT = 0.12 µg/µl [SEM 0.03]), IL-6 (placebo-control = 3.946 µg/µl [SEM 0.98], - LLLT = 0.854 µg/µl [SEM 0.33]), IL-10 (placebo-control = 1.116 µg/µl [SEM 0.22], - LLLT = 0.352 µg/µl [SEM 0.15]), and COX-2 (placebo-control = 4.984 µg/µl [SEM 1.18], LLLT = 1.470 µg/µl [SEM 0.73]). Conclusion: Irradiation of superpulsed LLLT on successive days five times per week for 14 weeks decreased morphological changes, skeletal muscle damage and inflammation in mdx mice. This indicates that LLLT has potential to decrease progression of Duchenne muscular dystrophy
