    Photoacoustic Tomography in a Rectangular Reflecting Cavity

    Almost all known image reconstruction algorithms for photoacoustic and thermoacoustic tomography assume that the acoustic waves leave the region of interest after a finite time. This assumption is reasonable if the reflections from the detectors and surrounding surfaces can be neglected or filtered out (for example, by time-gating). However, when the object is surrounded by acoustically hard detector arrays, and/or by additional acoustic mirrors, the acoustic waves will undergo multiple reflections. (In the absence of absorption they would bounce around in such a reverberant cavity forever). This disallows the use of the existing free-space reconstruction techniques. This paper proposes a fast iterative reconstruction algorithm for measurements made at the walls of a rectangular reverberant cavity. We prove the convergence of the iterations under a certain sufficient condition, and demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the algorithm in numerical simulations.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure

    A Morse index theorem for elliptic operators on bounded domains

    Given a selfadjoint, elliptic operator LL, one would like to know how the spectrum changes as the spatial domain Ω⊂Rd\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^d is deformed. For a family of domains {Ωt}t∈[a,b]\{\Omega_t\}_{t\in[a,b]} we prove that the Morse index of LL on Ωa\Omega_a differs from the Morse index of LL on Ωb\Omega_b by the Maslov index of a path of Lagrangian subspaces on the boundary of Ω\Omega. This is particularly useful when Ωa\Omega_a is a domain for which the Morse index is known, e.g. a region with very small volume. Then the Maslov index computes the difference of Morse indices for the "original" problem (on Ωb\Omega_b) and the "simplified" problem (on Ωa\Omega_a). This generalizes previous multi-dimensional Morse index theorems that were only available on star-shaped domains or for Dirichlet boundary conditions. We also discuss how one can compute the Maslov index using crossing forms, and present some applications to the spectral theory of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems.Comment: 21 pages; weaker regularity assumptions than in the first versio

    The author has identified the following significant results. LANDSAT fulfilled the requirements for general soils and land use information. RB-57 imagery was required to provide the information and detail needed for mapping soils for land evaluation. Soils maps for land evaluation were provided on clear mylar at the scale of the county highway map to aid users in locating mapping units. Resulting mapped data were computer processed to provided a series of interpretive maps (land value, limitations to development, etc.) and area summaries for the users

    Anomalous aging phenomena caused by drift velocities

    We demonstrate via several examples that a uniform drift velocity gives rise to anomalous aging, characterized by a specific form for the two-time correlation functions, in a variety of statistical-mechanical systems far from equilibrium. Our first example concerns the oscillatory phase observed recently in a model of competitive learning. Further examples, where the proposed theory is exact, include the voter model and the Ohta-Jasnow-Kawasaki theory for domain growth in any dimension, and a theory for the smoothing of sandpile surfaces.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures.     We present two models of competitive learning, which are respectively interfacial and cooperative learning. This learning is outcome-related, so that spatially and temporally local environments influence the conversion of a given site between one of two different types. We focus here on the behavior of the models at coexistence, which yields new critical behavior and the existence of a phase involving a novel type of coarsening which is oscillatory in nature.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures.     The soft X-ray sky survey data are combined with the results from the UXT sounding rocket payload. Very strong constraints can then be placed on models of the origin of the soft diffuse background. Additional observational constraints force more complicated and realistic models. Significant progress was made in the extraction of more detailed spectral information from the UXT data set. Work was begun on a second generation proportional counter response model. The first flight of the sounding rocket will have a collimator to study the diffuse background

    A hydrogen energy carrier. Volume 2: Systems analysis

    A systems analysis of hydrogen as an energy carrier in the United States indicated that it is feasible to use hydrogen in all energy use areas, except some types of transportation. These use areas are industrial, residential and commercial, and electric power generation. Saturation concept and conservation concept forecasts of future total energy demands were made. Projected costs of producing hydrogen from coal or from nuclear heat combined with thermochemical decomposition of water are in the range 1.00to1.00 to 1.50 per million Btu of hydrogen produced. Other methods are estimated to be more costly. The use of hydrogen as a fuel will require the development of large-scale transmission and storage systems. A pipeline system similar to the existing natural gas pipeline system appears practical, if design factors are included to avoid hydrogen environment embrittlement of pipeline metals. Conclusions from the examination of the safety, legal, environmental, economic, political and societal aspects of hydrogen fuel are that a hydrogen energy carrier system would be compatible with American values and the existing energy system

    The analysis of the beryllium-filtered data from Flight 17.020 was completed. The data base provided by the Wisconsin diffuse X-ray sky survey is being analyzed by correlating the B and C band emission with individual velocity components of neutral hydrogen. Work on a solid state detector to be used in high resolution spectroscopy of diffuse or extend X-ray sources is continuing. A series of 21 cm observations was completed. A paper on the effects of process parameter variation on the reflectivity of sputter-deposited tungsten-carvon multilayers was published
