On being a mentor
This article explores issues relating to mentoring students, particularly ophthalmic nursing students. It highlights the importance of mentorship in learning in practice, which in turn is critical to students' education in a competency-based profession. It considers the factors essential in successful mentoring, including two-way feedback, and the importance of mentors understanding the nature of the psychological processes involved and how to assess students' learning and competencies. It also highlights the crucial gate-keeping role of mentors in ensuring that students are fit to practise, and the importance of nurse mentors themselves being fit to practise
On alpha stable distribution of wind driven water surface wave slope
We propose a new formulation of the probability distribution function of wind
driven water surface slope with an -stable distribution probability.
The mathematical formulation of the probability distribution function is given
under an integral formulation. Application to represent the probability of time
slope data from laboratory experiments is carried out with satisfactory
results. We compare also the -stable model of the water surface slopes
with the Gram-Charlier development and the non-Gaussian model of Liu et
al\cite{Liu}. Discussions and conclusions are conducted on the basis of the

Voltage and current spectra for matrix power converters
Matrix power converters are used for transforming one alternating-current power supply to another, with different peak voltage and frequency. There are three input lines, with sinusoidally varying voltages which are 120â—¦ out of phase one from another, and the output is to be delivered as a similar three-phase supply. The matrix converter switches rapidly, to connect each output line in sequence to each of the input lines in an attempt to synthesize the prescribed output voltages. The switching is carried out at high frequency and it is of practical importance to know
the frequency spectra of the output voltages and of the input and output currents. We determine in this paper these spectra using a new method, which has significant advantages over the prior default method (a multiple Fourier series technique), leading to a considerably more direct calculation. In particular, the determination of the input current spectrum is feasible here, whereas it would be a significantly more daunting procedure using the prior method instead
Knowlesi malaria in Vietnam
The simian malaria parasite Plasmodium knowlesi is transmitted in the forests of Southeast Asia. Symptomatic zoonotic knowlesi malaria in humans is widespread in the region and is associated with a history of spending time in the jungle. However, there are many settings where knowlesi transmission to humans would be expected but is not found. A recent report on the Ra-glai population of southern central Vietnam is taken as an example to help explain why this may be so
The contrasting physiological and subjective effects of chewing gum on social stress
Uncertainty exists with respect to the extent to which chewing gum may attenuate stress-induced rises in cortisol secretion (Scholey et al., 2009; Smith, 2010; Johnson et al., 2011). The present study used the Trier Social Stress Task (TSST: Kirschbaum et al., 1993), a task known to elevate cortisol secretion (Kudielka et al., 2004), in order to examine the moderating physiological and subjective effects of chewing gum on social stress. Forty participants completed the TSST either with or without chewing gum. As expected, completion of the TSST elevated both cortisol and subjective stress levels, whilst impairing mood. Although gum moderated the perception of stress, cortisol concentrations were higher following the chewing of gum. The findings are consistent with Smith (2010) who argued that elevations in cortisol following the chewing of gum reflect heightened arousal. The findings suggest that chewing gum only benefits subjective measures of stress. The mechanism remains unclear; however, this may reflect increased cerebral blood flow, cognitive distraction, and/or effects secondary to task facilitation
