    An Extremely Luminous Galaxy at z=5.74

    We report the discovery of an extremely luminous galaxy lying at a redshift of z=5.74, SSA22-HCM1. The object was found in narrowband imaging of the SSA22 field using a 105 Angstrom bandpass filter centered at 8185 Angstroms during the course of the Hawaii narrowband survey using LRIS on the 10 m Keck II Telescope, and was identified by the equivalent width of the emission W_lambda(observed)=175 Angstroms, flux = 1.7 x 10^{-17} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}). Comparison with broadband colors shows the presence of an extremely strong break (> 4.2 at the 2 sigma level) between the Z band above the line, where the AB magnitude is 25.5, and the R band below, where the object is no longer visible at a 2 sigma upper limit of 27.1 (AB mags). These properties are only consistent with this object's being a high-z Ly alpha emitter. A 10,800 s spectrum obtained with LRIS yields a redshift of 5.74. The object is similar in its continuum shape, line properties, and observed equivalent width to the z=5.60 galaxy, HDF 4-473.0, as recently described by Weymann et al. (1998), but is 2-3 times more luminous in the line and in the red continuum. For H_0 = 65 km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1} and q_0 = (0.02, 0.5) we would require star formation rates of around (40, 7) solar masses per year to produce the UV continuum in the absence of extinction.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Latex with emulateapj style file; to appear in the Astrophysical Journal (Letters

    Particle Swarm Optimisation for learning Bayesian Networks

    This paper discusses the potential of Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) for inducing Bayesian Networks (BNs). Specifically, we detail two methods which adopt the search and score approach to BN learning. The two algorithms are similar in that they both use PSO as the search algorithm, and the K2 metric to score the resulting network. The difference lies in the way networks are constructed. The CONstruct And Repair (CONAR) algorithm generates structures, validates, and repairs if required, and the REstricted STructure (REST) algorithm, only permits valid structures to be developed. Initial experiments indicate that these approaches produce promising results when compared to other BN learning strategies

    The Density of Lyman-alpha Emitters at Very High Redshift

    We describe narrowband and spectroscopic searches for emission-line star forming galaxies in the redshift range 3 to 6 with the 10 m Keck II Telescope. These searches yield a substantial population of objects with only a single strong (equivalent width >> 100 Angstrom) emission line, lying in the 4000 - 10,000 Angstrom range. Spectra of the objects found in narrowband-selected samples at lambda ~5390 Angstroms and ~6741 Angstroms show that these very high equivalent width emission lines are generally redshifted Lyman alpha 1216 Angstrom at z~3.4 and 4.5. The density of these emitters above the 5 sigma detection limit of 1.5 e-17 ergs/cm^2/s is roughly 15,000 per square degree per unit redshift interval at both z~3.4 and 4.5. A complementary deeper (1 sigma \~1.0 e-18 ergs/cm^2/s) slit spectroscopic search covering a wide redshift range but a more limited spatial area (200 square arcminutes) shows such objects can be found over the redshift range 3 to 6, with the currently highest redshift detected being at z=5.64. The Lyman alpha flux distribution can be used to estimate a minimum star formation rate in the absence of reddening of roughly 0.01 solar masses/Mpc^3/year (H_0 = 65 km/s/Mpc and q_0 = 0.5). Corrections for reddening are likely to be no larger than a factor of two, since observed equivalent widths are close to the maximum values obtainable from ionization by a massive star population. Within the still significant uncertainties, the star formation rate from the Lyman alpha-selected sample is comparable to that of the color-break-selected samples at z~3, but may represent an increasing fraction of the total rates at higher redshifts.     Numerical Optimisation of Building Thermal and Energy Performance in Hospitals

    This thesis details the development and testing of a metamodel-based building optimisation methodology dubbed thermal building optimisation tool (T-BOT), designed as an information gathering framework and decision support tool rather than a design automator. Initial samples of building simulations are used to train moving least squares regression (MLSR) meta-models of the design space. A genetic algorithm (GA) is then used to optimise with the dual objectives of minimising time-averaged thermal discomfort and energy use. The optimum trade-off is presented as a Pareto front. Adaptive coupling functionality of the building simulation program ESP-r is used to augment the dynamic thermal model (DTM) with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), allowing local evaluation of thermal comfort within rooms. Furthermore, the disconnect between simulation and optimisation induced by the metamodeling is exploited to lend flexibility to the data gathered in the initial samples. Optimisations can hence be performed for any combination of location, time period, thermal comfort criteria and design variables, from a single set of sample simulations; this was termed a “one sample many optimisations” or OSMO approach. This can present substantial time savings over a comparable direct search optimisation technique. To the author’s knowledge the OSMO approach and adaptive coupling of DTM and CFD are unique among building thermal optimisation (BTO) models. Development and testing was focussed on hospital environments, though the method is potentially applicable to other environments. The program was tested by application to two models, one a theoretical test case and one a case study based on a real hospital building. It was found that variation in spatial location, time period and thermal comfort criteria can result in different optimum conditions, though seasonal variation had a large effect on this. Also the sample size and selection of design variables and their ranges were found to be critical to meta-model fidelity

    The Flow Country Peatlands of Scotland: Foreword

    First paragraph: In the far north of Scotland, a vast and varied expanse of blanket peatland (Figure 1) extends across an area of 4,000 km2 within the historic counties of Caithness and Sutherland, from the foot of the mountains in the west to the coast in the east. It is the largest expanse of blanket mire in Europe (Lindsay et al. 1988) and the largest single terrestrial carbon store in the UK (Chapman et al. 2009). It is known as the Flow Country. The Flow Country has high conservation value, being of particular importance for its suite of breeding birds which includes the Common Scoter (Melanitta nigra), Greenshank (Tringa nebularia), Dunlin (Calidris alpina), Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria) and Hen Harrier (Circus cyaneus), and a refuge for many species normally found closer to the Arctic (Lindsay et al. 1988). The nature conservation importance of this area is reflected in the designation of over 1,300 km2 as Natura 2000 sites under the European Habitats and Birds Directives, including the largest terrestrial Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in the UK, and the current consideration of the Flow Country for World Heritage Site status

    Solar-Powered Active Road Studs and Highway Infrastructure: Effect on Vehicle Speeds

    Vehicle speeds have a direct relationship with the severity of road crashes and may influence their probability of occurrence. Solar-powered active road studs have been shown to have a positive effect on driver confidence, but their impact on vehicle speed in conjunction with other road features is little understood. This study aims to address this gap in knowledge through a case study of a 20 km section of a strategic major road featuring a variety of highway infrastructure features. Before-and-after surveys were undertaken at 21 locations along the route using manual radar speed measurement. Analysis of nearly 10,000 speed measurements showed no statistically significant change in mean speeds following the implementation of the road studs. Linear regression models are proposed for two different posted speed limits, associating road features with expected vehicle speed. The models suggest that vehicle speeds are chiefly influenced by merges, curves, gradients, and ambient light conditions. The findings of this study should provide confidence that active road studs may be implemented without a negative impact on speed-related safety. The work also provides further expansion of the evidence base describing the effect of highway infrastructure features on vehicle speeds

    Active Road Studs as an Alternative to Lighting on Rural Roads: Driver Safety Perception

    Drivers, particularly with increasing age, cite driving at night as being problematic and feeling unsafe. Ultimately this may result in self-regulation and avoidance, with potentially negative health effects. The issue is commonly mitigated through provision of street lighting, but with it comes cost, environmental impact, and other negative effects. Research has suggested that provision of LED Active Road Studs may be of assistance to drivers at night. However, it is not known how implementation of this measure affects driver confidence, as research to date has focused on observational study of actual driving behaviour. The present work addresses this gap in knowledge using data from 698 respondents to a questionnaire survey of households around a recently treated route. Overall, 72% reported an increase in confidence driving at night, with key reasons cited as increased preview time and reduced glare. A total of 80% of respondents believed the overall safety of the study route had improved. Underlying confidence was found to be lower in females, with confidence increasing with mileage driven. This study is the first to suggest the use of active road studs may increase driver confidence and provide increased travel opportunities, particularly where street lighting is impractical or undesirable in terms of sustainability

    Colon and rectal cancer incidence and water trihalomethane concentrations in New South Wales, Australia

    BACKGROUND There is evidence, although inconsistent, that long term exposure to disinfection by products (DBPs) increases the risk of bowel cancer. No study has been conducted in Australia to examine this association and due to difference in the methods of disinfection the risk can vary across geographical regions and. This study was conducted to analyse the association of trihalomethanes (THMs) in water with colon and rectal cancer in NSW Australia. METHODS Average yearly concentrations of total and individual species of THMs were obtained for 50 local government areas (LGAs). Indirectly-standardized incidence rates of colon and rectal cancers in LGAs for the period 1995 to 2001 were regressed against mean THM concentrations lagged five years, adjusting for socioeconomic status, high risk drinking, smoking status, usual source of water and year of diagnosis, including local and global random effects within a Bayesian framework. The incidence rate ratios (IRRs) for an interquartile range (IQR) increase in THMs were estimated. RESULTS Using five year lag of exposure there was a positive association between bromoform concentration and CRC in men (IRR = 1.025, 95% CI 1.010, 1.040) but not in women (IRR = 1.003, 95% CI 0.987, 1.018). The association in men was mainly found in colon cancer with bromoform (IRR = 1.035, 95% CI 1.017, 1.053). There was no appreciable association of colorectal cancer with other species of THMs. Sensitivity analyses did not materially change the associations observed. CONCLUSION A positive association was observed between colon cancer and water bromoform concentrations in men. Given the potential population impact of such an association, further research into the relationship between THMs, particularly brominated species, and colorectal cancer is warranted.This study was conducted as part of a PhD thesis.
