Endovascular Interventional Radiology of the Urogenital Tract

Interventional radiology of the male urogenital system includes percutaneous and endovascular procedures, and these last consist mostly of transcatheter arterial embolizations. At the kidney level, arterial embolizations are performed mainly for palliative treatment of parenchymal tumors, for renal traumas and, less frequently, for arteriovenous fistulas and renal aneurysms and pseudoaneurysms. These latter may often require emergency intervention as they can cause renal or peri-renal hematomas or significant hematuria. Transcatheter arterial embolization is also an effective therapy for intractable severe bladder hematuria secondary to a number of neoplastic and inflammatory conditions in the pelvis, including unresectable bladder cancer and radiation-induced or cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis. Endovascular interventional procedures for the penis are indicated for the treatment of post-traumatic priapism. In this article, we review the main endovascular radiological interventions of the male urogenital system, describing the technical aspects, results, and complications of each procedure at the various anatomical districts

In vitro and in vivo tetracycline-controlled myogenic conversion of NIH-3T3 cells: evidence of programmed cell death after muscle cell transplantation.

Ex vivo gene therapy of Duchenne muscular dystrophy based on autologous transplantation of genetically modified myoblasts is limited by their premature senescence. MyoD-converted fibroblasts represent an alternative source of myogenic cells. In this study the forced MyoD-dependent conversion of murine NIH-3T3 fibroblasts into myoblasts under the control of an inducible promoter silent in the presence of tetracycline was evaluated. After tetracycline withdrawal this promoter drives the transcription of MyoD in the engineered fibroblasts, inducing their myogenesis and giving rise to β-galactosidase-positive cells. MyoD-expressing fibroblasts withdrew from the cell cycle, but were unable to fuse in vitro into multinucleated myotubes. Five days following implantation of engineered fibroblasts in muscles of C57BL/10J mice we observed a sevenfold increase of β-galactosidase-positive regenerating myofibers in animals not treated with antibiotic compared with treated animals. After 1 week the number of positive fibers decreased and several apoptotic myonuclei were detected. Three weeks following implantation of MyoD-converted fibroblasts in recipient mice, no positive "blue" fiber was observed. Our results suggest that transactivation by tetracycline of MyoD may drive an in vivo myogenic conversion of NIH-3T3 fibroblasts and that, in this experimental setting, apoptosis plays a relevant role in limiting the efficacy of engineered fibroblast transplantation. This work opens the question whether apoptotic phenomena also play a general role as limiting factors of cellmediated gene therapy of inherited muscle disorders

Influence of citric acid on thermoplastic wheat flour/poly (lactic acid) blends. II. Barrier properties and water vapor sorption isotherms

The effects of citric acid on wheat flour/glycerol/poly(lactic) acid (PLA) blends prepared by one-step twin-screw extrusion have been studied to improve barrier properties of starch based materials. A series of injected samples were produced from prepared compounds with varying ratio (0-20 part) of citric acid. The effects of citric acid on the water vapor permeability, oxygen permeability and water solubility in the film were then investigated. The barrier properties results proved that citric acid behaves as compatibilizing agent between starch and PLA phases for ratios between 0 and 10 parts. When the added amount exceeds 10 parts, CA acted as a plasticizer and/or promoted the hydrolysis of the starch glycosidic bonds

Contextualising social capital in online brand communities

Online brand communities (OBC) are growing in number and becoming an increasingly important interface where marketers can effectively facilitate the relationship between their brand and consumers. A qualitative study using a four-month netnography over three OBCs followed by focus groups with OBC members explored the dynamics of social capital in these communities. Findings indicate that social capital is an important driver in the success of OBCs, and all the elements of social capital including a shared language, shared vision, social trust and reciprocity are evident. Moreover, results from this study indicate that these elements are crucial in developing the network ties that are integral to building loyalty and brand equity

From shallow to very shallow image of the highly active Kefalonia - Zakynthos fault system

4 pages, 2 figuresIn May 2022 and June 2023 two oceanographic cruises were carried out around the Ionian Islands with the aim of defining the real geometry of the strike-slip fault system of Kefalonia and of the reverse faults present south of Zakynthos. The acquired multidisciplinary and multiresolution data will also allow to understand the dynamics of the area offshore the Peoloponnese peninsula, the deformation of the surface sediments at the transition of the two systems, i.e. from reverse fault system to strike-slip fault system, and the relationship between the recorded seismicity and mapped fault activity. To date, the analysis of the processed data has allowed us to define the tectonic and morphological complexity of the fault system affecting the investigated area. The institutions of archaic post-modernity and their organizational and managerial consequences: The case of Portugal

The long march of modernization of the Western societies tends to be presented as following a regular sequence: societies and institutions were pre-modern, and then they were modernized, eventually becoming post-modern. Such teleology may provide an incomplete or distorted narrative of societal evolution in many parts of the world, even in the ‘post-modern heartland’ of Western Europe, with Portugal being a case in point. The concept of archaic post-modernity has been developed by a philosopher, José Gil, to show how Portuguese institutions and organizations combine elements of pre-modernity and post-modernity. The notion of an archaic post-modernity is advanced in order to provide an alternative account of the modernization process, which enriches discussion of the varieties of capitalism. Differences in historical experiences create singularities that may be considered in the analysis of culture, management and organization
