Extracting W Boson Couplings from the e+e−e^{+}e^{-} Production of Four Leptons

We consider the processes e+e−→ℓ+ℓ′−ννˉ′e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow \ell^{+} \ell^{\prime -}\nu \bar{\nu}^{\prime}, including all possible charged lepton combinations, with regard to measuring parameters characterizing the WW boson. We calculate at what level these processes can be used to measure anamolous triple-boson vertice coupling parameters for the cases of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} colliders at 500 GeVGeV and 1 TeVTeV center of mass energies.Comment: 13 pages,OCIP/C-93-

Radiative lepton flavor violating decays in the Randall Sundrum background with localized leptons

We study the radiative lepton flavor violating l_i -> l_j\gamma decays in the two Higgs doublet model, respecting the Randall Sundrum scenario and estimate the contributions of the KK modes of left (right) handed charged lepton doublets (singlets) on the branching ratios. We observe that the branching ratios are sensitive to the contributions of the charged lepton KK modes.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, 2 table

Quality of Life, Stress Perception, and Quality of Social Networks in Persons Living with Brain Injury: An Exploration of the Effectiveness of a Community-Based Program

    Get PDF
Background: This paper examines specific program elements of a community-based program for individuals living with brain injury. Results from a previous study suggested that members who attended regularly reported lower stress perception, higher quality of life perception, and higher social connectedness than did peers living in the community without such supports. In this study, we sought to understand reasons for their perceptions about how the program may have been helpful in shaping their perspectives of living with the effects of brain injury. Methods: An explanatory case-study approach was applied, using multiple cases. Nine individuals were randomly selected from a subsample of the original outcomes study. Individuals were interviewed using a series of semi-structured and open-ended questions for 60-90 min about the way the community-based program may have impacted their lives. Results: Narrative transcripts from participant interviews were reviewed by the authors and organized into four prominent themes that illustrated important member-centric outcomes of the program. Conclusions: This study explored key attributes and characteristics that may contribute to the effectiveness of a community-based program for persons living with chronic brain injury. Themes that emerged from member interviews align with occupational therapy theories and may be helpful in shaping community-based practice

Occurrence of the orange wheat blossom midge [Diptera :Cecidomyiidae] in Quebec and its incidence on wheat grain microflora

Samples of wheat spikes (Triticum aestivum) were collected in the summer of 1995 from different crop districts in Quebec and the occurrence of orange wheat blossom midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana) and seed microflora were determined. Estimated yield loss caused by wheat midge larvae averaged 6.3%. The percentage of infested spikes was significantly correlated with total seed contamination by fungi and bacteria (r = 0.79). The specific occurrence of Fusarium graminearum in grains was also significantly correlated with number of larvae per spike (r = 0.67) or per spikelet (r = 0.67). Consequently, the wheat midge might play a role in dissemination of F. graminearum

Globular Clusters in the dE,N galaxy NGC 3115 DW1: New Insights from Spectroscopy and HST Photometry

The properties of globular clusters in dwarf galaxies are key to understanding the formation of globular cluster systems, and in particular in verifying scenarios in which globular cluster systems of larger galaxies formed (at least partly) from the accretion of dwarf galaxies. Here, we revisit the globular cluster system of the dE,N galaxy NGC 3115 DW1 - a companion of the nearby S0 galaxy NGC 3115 - adding Keck/LRIS spectroscopy and HST/WFPC2 imaging to previous ground-based photometry. Spectra for seven globular clusters reveal normal abundance ratios with respect to the Milky Way and M31 clusters, as well as a relatively high mean metallicity ([Fe/H] = -1.0+/-0.1 dex). Crude kinematics indicate a high velocity dispersion within 10 kpc which could either be caused by dark matter dominated outer regions, or by the stripping of outer globular clusters by the nearby giant galaxy NGC 3115. The total galaxy mass out to 3 and 10 kpc lies between 10^10 and 10^11 solar masses and 2*10^10 and 4*10^11 solar masses, respectively, depending on the mass estimator used and the assumptions on cluster orbits and systemic velocity. The HST imaging allows measurement of sizes for two clusters, returning core radii around 2.0 pc, similar to the sizes observed in other galaxies. Spectroscopy allows an estimate of the degree of contamination by foreground stars or background galaxies for the previous ground-based photometry, but does not require a revision of previous results: NGC 3115 DW1 hosts around 60+/-20 clusters which corresponds to a specific frequency of 4.9+/-1.9, on the high end for massive dEs. Given its absolute magnitude (M_V=-17.7 mag) and the properties of its cluster system, NGC 3115 DW1 appears to be a transition between a luminous dE and low-luminosity E galaxy.Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal, August 2000 issu

Changes in Plasma Phospholipid Fatty Acid Patterns and their Impact on Plasma Triglyceride Levels Following Fish Oil Supplementation

    Get PDF
The objective of the present study was to test for associations between changes in fatty acids (FAs) and changes in plasma triglyceride (TG) levels after an n-3 FA supplementation and to test whether SNPs from the FADS gene cluster were associated with plasma FA levels or with specific FA patterns. A total of 210 subjects completed a 2-wk run-in period followed by 6-wk supplementation with 5g/d of fish oil. FA profiles of plasma phospholipids (PPLs) were obtained and 19 SNPs from the FADS gene cluster were genotyped. Principal component analysis was conducted and scores were calculated. There was an increase in EPA, DPA and DHA levels in PPLs as well as a decrease in ALA and all n-6 FA levels after the supplementation. Factor analysis suggested 4 post-n-3 FA supplementation patterns. Changes in AA, ALA, DGLA, as well as changes in total n-3 and omega-6 FAs in absolute quantities of FAs were all associated with a change in TG levels whereas the correlation remained significant only for AA and DGLA when FAs were expressed as percentage of total FAs. Several SNPs from the FADS gene cluster were associated with post-supplementation FA levels. These results suggest that FAs alone or regrouped in factors could play a role in modulating plasma TG levels after fish oil supplementation. SNPs from the FADS gene cluster interact with both FAs and/or factors to modulate TG levels
