    Evaluation of ibuprofen prescriptions into a Psychiatric Hospital: regarding safety, indication, and dose.

    Introduction: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen are widely used throughout the world. In the psychiatric hospital, where this study was conducted, drugs such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and lithium are widely used and may interact with ibuprofen (IBU). The literature also shows that ibuprofen may lead to changes in the central nervous system, which may trigger the imbalance of psychiatric disorders. Objective: to evaluate whether both the frequency of use and the prescriptions of ibuprofen are in agreement with the information contained in the literature regarding safety, indication, and dose. Methodology: retrospective observational cross-sectional study to evaluate the use of ibuprofen on patients from a psychiatric hospital. The prescriptions were evaluated for a 10-month period. Results: of the total number of prescriptions, 43 contained ibuprofen 600 mg. Note that in most cases, the drug was being prescribed according to the literature. However, in some cases there were divergences in the literature regarding: i) safety – information about the absence or presence of ulcers (1; 2.3%), gastrointestinal events (0; 0%) and absence of dyspepsia, abdominal pain and discomfort gastrointestinal (11; 25.5%) – ii) and the dose, in which in 19 cases (44%) it was higher than recommended by the literature. In addition, in 2 prescriptions (4.7%), the concomitant use of IBU and SSRI was observed and in 5 (11.6%) of IBU and lithium.     This review demonstrates the importance of plants as sources of molecules used in anticancer therapies. The approach is performed by relating the active molecules to their origins, details, mechanisms of action, structure-activity relationship and chemical characteristics of chemotherapeutical medicines. It was also described the development of anticancer agents from plants by the pharmaceutical industry and the difficulties to release these compounds as a trademark. These include the well known paclitaxel, docetaxel, vincristine, vinblastine, vinorelbine, vindesine, etoposide, teniposide, and other molecules that are undergoing clinical trials

    Circulating miR-181a-5p as a new biomarker for acute cellular rejection in heart transplantation

    [Abstract] Background: Acute cellular rejection (ACR) is a major complication in heart transplantation (HTx). Endomyocardial biopsy is the reference method for early detection of ACR, but a new non-invasive approach is needed. Tentative candidates could be circulating microRNAs. This study aimed to discover and validate microRNAs in serum for ACR detection after HTx. Methods: This prospective, observational, single-center study included 121 HTx patients. ACR was graded according to International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation classification (0R−3R). First, in the discovery phase, microRNA expression profile was carried out in serum samples from patients at pre-rejection, during, and post-rejection time (0RS1 → 2RS2 → 0RS3). Relative expression (2-ΔCq) of 179 microRNAs per sample was analyzed by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Second, a microRNA with a significant rise and fall pattern during ACR was selected for the next validation phase, where it was analyzed (reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction) in serum samples from 2 groups of patients: the no-ACR group (0R grade) and the ACR group (≄2R grade). Finally, a sensitivity analysis (receiver operating characteristic curve) was done to assess microRNA accuracy for ACR detection in HTx. Results: A total of 21 ACR episodes (0RS1 → 2RS2 → 0RS3) with their respective serum samples (n = 63) were included in the discovery phase. Among the 179 microRNAs analyzed, only miR-181a-5p met the rise and fall criteria. In the validation phase, miR-181a-5p relative expression (2-ΔCq) in the ACR group (n = 45) was significantly overexpressed (p < 0.0001) vs the no-ACR group (n = 45). miR-181a-5p showed an area under the curve of 0.804 (95% confidence interval: 0.707-0.880); sensitivity and specificity of 78% and 76%, respectively; and a negative predicted value of 98%.Instituto de Salud Carlos III; PI15/0222

    Data Centric Storage Technologies: Analysis and Enhancement

    This paper surveys the most relevant works of Data Centric Storage (DCS) for Wireless Sensor Networks. DCS is a research area that covers data dissemination and storage inside an ad-hoc sensor network. In addition, we present a Quadratic Adaptive Replication (QAR) scheme for DCS, which is a more adaptive multi-replication DCS system and outperforms previous proposals in the literature by reducing the overall network traffic that has a direct impact on energy consumption. Finally, we discuss the open research challenges for DCS

    CLASS Observations of Atmospheric Cloud Polarization at Millimeter Wavelengths

    The dynamic atmosphere imposes challenges to ground-based cosmic microwave background observation, especially for measurements on large angular scales. The hydrometeors in the atmosphere, mostly in the form of clouds, scatter the ambient thermal radiation and are known to be the main linearly polarized source in the atmosphere. This scattering-induced polarization is significantly enhanced for ice clouds due to the alignment of ice crystals under gravity, which are also the most common clouds seen at the millimeter-astronomy sites at high altitudes. This work presents a multifrequency study of cloud polarization observed by the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) experiment on Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, from 2016 to 2022, at the frequency bands centered around 40, 90, 150, and 220 GHz. Using a machine-learning-assisted cloud classifier, we made connections between the transient polarized emission found in all four frequencies with the clouds imaged by monitoring cameras at the observing site. The polarization angles of the cloud events are found to be mostly 90∘90^\circ from the local meridian, which is consistent with the presence of horizontally aligned ice crystals. The 90 and 150 GHz polarization data are consistent with a power law with a spectral index of 3.90±0.063.90\pm0.06, while an excess/deficit of polarization amplitude is found at 40/220 GHz compared with a Rayleigh scattering spectrum. These results are consistent with Rayleigh-scattering-dominated cloud polarization, with possible effects from supercooled water absorption and/or Mie scattering from a population of large cloud particles that contribute to the 220 GHz polarization.Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Ap

    CLASS Angular Power Spectra and Map-Component Analysis for 40 GHz Observations through 2022

    Measurement of the largest angular scale (ℓ<30\ell < 30) features of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization is a powerful way to constrain the optical depth to reionization, τ\tau, and search for the signature of inflation through the detection of primordial BB-modes. We present an analysis of maps covering nearly 75% of the sky made from the ground-based 40 GHz40\,\mathrm{GHz} channel of the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) from August 2016 to May 2022. Using fast front-end polarization modulation from the Atacama Desert in Chile, we show this channel achieves higher sensitivity than the analogous frequencies from satellite measurements in the range 10<ℓ<10010 < \ell < 100. After a final calibration adjustment, noise simulations show the CLASS linear (circular) polarization maps have a white noise level of 125 (130) ΌK arcmin125 \,(130)\,\mathrm{\mu K\, arcmin}. We measure the Galaxy-masked EEEE and BBBB spectra of diffuse synchrotron radiation and compare to space-based measurements at similar frequencies. In combination with external data, we expand measurements of the spatial variations of the synchrotron spectral energy density (SED) to include new regions of the sky and measure the faint diffuse SED in the harmonic domain. We place a new upper limit on a background of circular polarization in the range 5<ℓ<1255 < \ell < 125 with the first bin showing Dℓ<0.023D_\ell < 0.023 ÎŒKCMB2\mathrm{\mu K^2_{CMB}} at 95% confidence. These results establish a new standard for recovery of the largest-scale CMB polarization from the ground and signal exciting possibilities when the higher sensitivity and higher frequency CLASS channels are included in the analysis.Comment: 36 pages, 24 figures, 6 tables.     Venus Observations at 40 and 90 GHz with CLASS

    Using the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor, we measure the disk-averaged absolute Venus brightness temperature to be 432.3 ±\pm 2.8 K and 355.6 ±\pm 1.3 K in the Q and W frequency bands centered at 38.8 and 93.7 GHz, respectively. At both frequency bands, these are the most precise measurements to date. Furthermore, we observe no phase dependence of the measured temperature in either band. Our measurements are consistent with a CO2_2-dominant atmospheric model that includes trace amounts of additional absorbers like SO2_2 and H2_2SO4_4.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, published in PS
