Discrete representation strategies for foreign exchange prediction
This is an extended version of the paper presented at the 4th International Workshop NFMCP 2015 held in conjunction with ECML PKDD 2015. The initial version has been published in NFMCP 2015 conference proceedings as part of Springer Series. This paper presents a novel approach to financial times series (FTS) prediction by mapping hourly foreign exchange data to string representations and deriving simple trading strategies from them. To measure the degree of similarity in these market strings we apply familiar string kernels, bag of words and n-grams, whilst also introducing a new kernel, time-decay n-grams, that captures the temporal nature of FTS. In the process we propose a sequential Parzen windows algorithm based on discrete representations where trading decisions for each string are learned in an online manner and are thus subject to temporal fluctuations. We evaluate the strength of a number of representations using both the string version and its continuous counterpart, whilst also comparing the performance of different learning algorithms on these representations, namely support vector machines, Parzen windows and Fisher discriminant analysis. Our extensive experiments show that the simple string representation coupled with the sequential Parzen windows approach is capable of outperforming other more exotic approaches, supporting the idea that when it comes to working in high noise environments often the simplest approach is the most effective
Setting UBVRI Photometric Zero-Points Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey ugriz Magnitudes
We discuss the use of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) ugriz point-spread
function (PSF) photometry for setting the zero points of UBVRI CCD images. From
a comparison with the Landolt (1992) standards and our own photometry we find
that there is a fairly abrupt change in B, V, R, & I zero points around g, r, i
~ 14.5, and in the U zero point at u ~ 16. These changes correspond to where
there is significant interpolation due to saturation in the SDSS PSF fluxes.
There also seems to be another, much smaller systematic effect for stars with
g, r > 19.5. The latter effect is consistent with a small Malmquist bias.
Because of the difficulties with PSF fluxes of brighter stars, we recommend
that comparisons of ugriz and UBVRI photometry should only be made for
unsaturated stars with g, r and i in the range 14.5 - 19.5, and u in the range
16 - 19.5. We give a prescription for setting the UBVRI zero points for CCD

High-probability minimax probability machines
In this paper we focus on constructing binary classifiers that are built on the premise of minimising an upper bound on their future misclassification rate. We pay particular attention to the approach taken by the minimax probability machine (Lanckriet et al. in J Mach Learn Res 3:555â582, 2003), which directly minimises an upper bound on the future misclassification rate in a worst-case setting: that is, under all possible choices of class-conditional distributions with a given mean and covariance matrix. The validity of these bounds rests on the assumption that the means and covariance matrices are known in advance, however this is not always the case in practice and their empirical counterparts have to be used instead. This can result in erroneous upper bounds on the future misclassification rate and lead to the formulation of sub-optimal predictors. In this paper we address this oversight and study the influence that uncertainty in the moments, the mean and covariance matrix, has on the construction of predictors under the minimax principle. By using high-probability upper bounds on the deviation between true moments and their empirical counterparts, we can re-formulate the minimax optimisation to incorporate this uncertainty and find the predictor that minimises the high-probability, worst-case misclassification rate. The moment uncertainty introduces a natural regularisation component into the optimisation, where each class is regularised in proportion to the degree of moment uncertainty. Experimental results would support the view that in the case of with limited data availability, the incorporation of moment uncertainty can lead to the formation of better predictors

Comparing proxy rated quality of life of people living with dementia in care homes
Background: Improving quality of life (QOL) for people with dementia is a priority. In care homes, we often rely on proxy ratings from staff and family but we do not know if, or how, they differ in care homes.
Methods: We compared 1056 pairs of staff and family DEMQOL-Proxy ratings from 86 care homes across England. We explored factors associated with ratings quantitatively using multilevel modelling and, qualitatively, through thematic analysis of 12 staff and 12 relative interviews.
Results: Staff and family ratings were weakly correlated (Ïs = 0.35). Median staff scores were higher than family's (104 v. 101; p < 0.001). Family were more likely than staff to rate resident QOL as âPoorâ (Ï2 = 55.91, p < 0.001). Staff and family rated QOL higher when residents had fewer neuropsychiatric symptoms and severe dementia. Staff rated QOL higher in homes with lower staff:resident ratios and when staff were native English speakers. Family rated QOL higher when the resident had spent longer living in the care home and was a native English. Spouses rated residentsâ QOL higher than other relatives. Qualitative results suggest differences arise because staff felt good care provided high QOL but families compared the present to the past. Family judgements centre on loss and are complicated by decisions about care home placement and their understandings of dementia.
Conclusion: Proxy reports differ systematically between staff and family. Reports are influenced by the rater:staff and family may conceptualise QOL differently
An ESA roadmap for geobiology in space exploration
This work was supported by the European Space Agency under the Topical Team, 'Geobiology in Space Exploration'. Claire Cousins is funded by a Royal Society of Edinburgh Research Fellowship, co-funded by the Marie Curie Actions FP7 Programme.Geobiology, and in particular mineral-microbe interactions, has a significant role to play in current and future space exploration. This includes the search for biosignatures in extraterrestrial environments, and the human exploration of space. Microorganisms can be exploited to advance such exploration, such as through biomining, maintenance of life-support systems, and testing of life-detection instrumentation. In view of these potential applications, a European Space Agency (ESA) Topical Team âGeobiology in Space Explorationâ was developed to explore these applications, and identify research avenues to be investigated to support this endeavour. Through community workshops, a roadmap was produced, with which to define future research directions via a set of 15 recommendations spanning three key areas: Science, Technology, and Community. These roadmap recommendations identify the need for research into: (1) New terrestrial space-analogue environments; (2) Community level microbial-mineral interactions; (3) Response of biofilms to the space environment; (4) Enzymatic and biochemical mineral interaction; (5) Technical refinement of instrumentation for space-based microbiology experiments, including precursor flight tests; (6) Integration of existing ground-based planetary simulation facilities; (7) Integration of fieldsite biogeography with laboratory- and field-based research; (8) Modification of existing planetary instruments for new geobiological investigations; (9) Development of in situ sample preparation techniques; (10) Miniaturisation of existing analytical methods, such as DNA sequencing technology; (11) New sensor technology to analyse chemical interaction in small volume samples; (12) Development of reusable Lunar and Near Earth Object experimental platforms; (13) Utility of Earth-based research to enable the realistic pursuit of extraterrestrial biosignatures; (14) Terrestrial benefits and technological spin-off from existing and future space-based geobiology investigations; and (15) New communication avenues between space agencies and terrestrial research organisations to enable this impact to be developed.PostprintPeer reviewe
Factors influencing clinical outcome in vestibular neuritis â A focussed review and reanalysis of prospective data
Following vestibular neuritis (VN), long term prognosis is not dependent on the magnitude of the residual peripheral function as measured with either caloric or the video head-impulse test. Rather, recovery is determined by a combination of visuo-vestibular (visual dependence), psychological (anxiety) and vestibular perceptual factors. Our recent research in healthy individuals has also revealed a strong association between the degree of lateralisation of vestibulo-cortical processing and gating of vestibular signals, anxiety and visual dependence. In the context of several functional brain changes occurring in the interaction between visual, vestibular and emotional cortices, which underpin the aforementioned psycho-physiological features in patients with VN, we re-examined our previous published findings focusing on additional factors impacting long term clinical outcome and function. These included: (i) the role of concomitant neuro-otological dysfunction (i.e. migraine and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)) and (ii) the degree to which brain lateralisation of vestibulo-cortical processing influences gating of vestibular function in the acute stage. We found that migraine and BPPV interfere with symptomatic recovery following VN. That is, dizziness handicap at short-term recovery stage was significantly predicted by migraine (r=0.523, n=28, p=.002), BPPV (r=0.658, n=31, p0.05). In left-sided VN patients, we observed a negative correlation between visual dependence and ipsilesional oculomotor thresholds (R2 0.459; p0.05). To summarise, our findings illustrate that in VN, neuro-otological co- morbidities retard recovery, and that measures of the peripheral vestibular system are an aggregate of residual function and cortically mediated gating of vestibular input
