Multidimensional Simulations of Rotating Pair Instability Supernovae
We study the effects of rotation on the dynamics, energetics and Ni-56
production of Pair Instability Supernova explosions by performing rotating
two-dimensional ("2.5-D") hydrodynamics simulations. We calculate the evolution
of eight low metallicity (Z = 10^-3, 10^-4 Zsun) massive (135-245 Msun) PISN
progenitors with initial surface rotational velocities 50% that of the critical
Keplerian value using the stellar evolution code MESA. We allow for both the
inclusion and the omission of the effects of magnetic fields in the angular
momentum transport and in chemical mixing, resulting in slowly-rotating and
rapidly-rotating final carbon-oxygen cores, respectively. Increased rotation
for carbon-oxygen cores of the same mass and chemical stratification leads to
less energetic PISN explosions that produce smaller amounts of Ni-56 due to the
effect of the angular momentum barrier that develops and slows the dynamical
collapse. We find a non-monotonic dependence of Ni-56 production on rotational
velocity in situations when smoother composition gradients form at the outer
edge of the rotating cores. In these cases, the PISN energetics are determined
by the competition of two factors: the extent of chemical mixing in the outer
layers of the core due to the effects of rotation in the progenitor evolution
and the development of angular momentum support against collapse. Our 2.5-D
PISN simulations with rotation are the first presented in the literature. They
reveal hydrodynamic instabilities in several regions of the exploding star and

Developing a Program Evaluation Instrument for Texas 4-H: A Work in Progress
The Texas 4-H Program is a continuously growing organization that has identified a major need to implement a standardized evaluation instrument to measure its impact and effectiveness. This article summarizes the development of the evaluation instrument by describing factors that surfaced to measure effective 4-H programs. This instrument will be available from the Texas 4-H Web page for all program coordinators to download and implement. Ultimately, this instrument will allow the Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program to become a more accountable organization, adding substance to an increasingly growing program
Trends in Sophomore Students\u27 Perceptions of Academic Advising Services at East Tennessee State University.
The purpose of this study was to determine sophomore students\u27 perceptions of academic advising at ETSU as reported in fall 2002 and trends in sophomore students\u27 perceptions of academic advising at ETSU from 1994 to 2002. Four research questions and seven hypotheses were examined.
The ACT Survey of Academic Advising was the instrument used in this study. This survey was administered to ETSU sophomores enrolled in 2000-level English literature classes during the fall semesters of 1994, 1998, and 2002. Data obtained from the survey regarding topics of discussion with advisors, satisfaction with assistance received, and impressions of advisors were analyzed to determine student perceptions and satisfaction. Variables of age, sex, college residence, type of advisor, and transfer status were examined in the 2002 data to determine any significant differences in these student subgroups. Comparative analysis was used to determine differences between ETSU sophomores surveyed in 2002 and sophomores included in a national normative study. Means scores obtained in 1994, 1998, and 2002 were tested to determine trends in students\u27 perceptions since 1994. This study utilized a descriptive research design. All hypotheses were tested using an alpha level of .05.
The results of this research indicated that continued improvements in academic advising services were needed at ETSU. The data in this study showed that ETSU students were satisfied with assistance received from their advisors in some areas. Students\u27 impressions of their advisors were less than favorable. There were few statistical differences between ETSU student subgroups. There were few statistical differences between ETSU and students in the normative study in satisfaction with advisors\u27 assistance. ETSU students had significantly less favorable impressions of their advisors than those in the normative study. Regarding trends in ETSU students\u27 perceptions of academic advising at ETSU, students were significantly more satisfied and had significantly higher impressions of advisors in 1998 and 2002 than in 1994. There were no significant differences in responses of sophomores surveyed in 1998 and those surveyed in 2002 on any items
Cluster Galaxy Evolution from a New Sample of Galaxy Clusters at 0.3 < z < 0.9
(Abridged) We analyze photometry and spectroscopy of a sample of 63 clusters
at 0.3<z<0.9 drawn from the Las Campanas Distant Cluster Survey to empirically
constrain models of cluster galaxy evolution. Specifically, by combining data
on our clusters with those from the literature we parametrize the redshift
dependence of 1) M*_I in the observed frame; 2) the V-I color of the E/S0 red
sequence in the observed frames; and 3) the I-K' color of the E/S0 red sequence
in the observed frame. Using the peak surface brightness of the cluster
detection, S, as a proxy for cluster mass, we find no correlation between S and
M* or the location of the red envelope in V-I. We suggest that these
observations can be explained with a model in which luminous early type
galaxies (or more precisely, the progenitors of current day luminous early type
galaxies) form the bulk of their stellar populations at high redshift (>~ 5)
and in which many of these galaxies, if not all, accrete mass either in the
form of evolved stellar populations or gas that causes only a short term
episode of star formation at lower redshifts (1.5 < z < 2). Our data are too
crude to reach conclusions regarding the evolutionary state of any particular
cluster or to investigate whether the morphological evolution of galaxies
matches the simple scenario we discuss, but the statistical nature of this
study suggests that the observed evolutionary trends are universal in massive

Preservation of muscle mass as a strategy to reduce the toxic effects of cancer chemotherapy on body composition
PURPOSE OF REVIEW:
Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy often experience very debilitating side effects, including unintentional weight loss, nausea, and vomiting. Changes in body composition, specifically lean body mass (LBM), are known to have important implications for anticancer drug toxicity and cancer prognosis. Currently, chemotherapy dosing is based on calculation of body surface area, although this approximation does not take into consideration the variability in lean and adipose tissue mass.
RECENT FINDINGS:
Patients with depletion of muscle mass present higher chemotherapy-related toxicity, whereas patients with larger amounts of LBM show fewer toxicities and better outcomes. Commonly used chemotherapy regimens promote changes in body composition, primarily by affecting skeletal muscle, as well as fat and bone mass. Experimental evidence has shown that pro-atrophy mechanisms, abnormal mitochondrial metabolism, and reduced protein anabolism are primarily implicated in muscle depletion. Muscle-targeted pro-anabolic strategies have proven successful in preserving lean tissue in the occurrence of cancer or following chemotherapy.
SUMMARY:
Muscle wasting often occurs as a consequence of anticancer treatments and is indicative of worse outcomes and poor quality of life in cancer patients. Accurate assessment of body composition and preservation of muscle mass may reduce chemotherapy toxicity and improve the overall survival
Abell 1201: a Minor merger at second core passage
We present an analysis of the structures and dynamics of the merging cluster
Abell~1201, which has two sloshing cold fronts around a cooling core, and an
offset gas core approximately 500kpc northwest of the center. New Chandra and
XMM-Newton data reveal a region of enhanced brightness east of the offset core,
with breaks in surface brightness along its boundary to the north and east.
This is interpreted as a tail of gas stripped from the offset core. Gas in the
offset core and the tail is distinguished from other gas at the same distance
from the cluster center chiefly by having higher density, hence lower entropy.
In addition, the offset core shows marginally lower temperature and metallicity
than the surrounding area. The metallicity in the cool core is high and there
is an abrupt drop in metallicity across the southern cold front. We interpret
the observed properties of the system, including the placement of the cold
fronts, the offset core and its tail in terms of a simple merger scenario. The
offset core is the remnant of a merging subcluster, which first passed
pericenter southeast of the center of the primary cluster and is now close to
its second pericenter passage, moving at ~1000 km/s. Sloshing excited by the
merger gave rise to the two cold fronts and the disposition of the cold fronts
reveals that we view the merger from close to the plane of the orbit of the

Luminosity Functions of Elliptical Galaxies at z < 1.2
The luminosity functions of E/S0 galaxies are constructed in 3 different
redshift bins (0.2 < z < 0.55, 0.55 < z < 0.8, 0.8 < z < 1.2), using the data
from the Hubble Space Telescope Medium Deep Survey (HST MDS) and other HST
surveys. These independent luminosity functions show the brightening in the
luminosity of E/S0s by about 0.5~1.0 magnitude at z~1, and no sign of
significant number evolution.
This is the first direct measurement of the luminosity evolution of E/S0
galaxies, and our results support the hypothesis of a high redshift of
formation (z > 1) for elliptical galaxies, together with weak evolution of the

The WINGS Survey: a progress report
A two-band (B and V) wide-field imaging survey of a complete, all-sky X-ray
selected sample of 78 clusters in the redshift range z=0.04-0.07 is presented.
The aim of this survey is to provide the astronomical community with a complete
set of homogeneous, CCD-based surface photometry and morphological data of
nearby cluster galaxies located within 1.5 Mpc from the cluster center. The
data collection has been completed in seven observing runs at the INT and
ESO-2.2m telescopes. For each cluster, photometric data of about 2500 galaxies
(down to V~23) and detailed morphological information of about 600 galaxies
(down to V~21) are obtained by using specially designed automatic tools.
As a natural follow up of the photometric survey, we also illustrate a long
term spectroscopic program we are carrying out with the WHT-WYFFOS and AAT-2dF
multifiber spectrographs. Star formation rates and histories, as well as
metallicity estimates will be derived for about 350 galaxies per cluster from
the line indices and equivalent widths measurements, allowing us to explore the
link between the spectral properties and the morphological evolution in high-
to low-density environments, and across a wide range in cluster X-ray

WINGS: a WIde-field Nearby Galaxy-cluster Survey. I - Optical imaging
This is the first paper of a series that will present data and scientific
results from the WINGS project, a wide-field, multiwavelength imaging and
spectroscopic survey of galaxies in 77 nearby clusters. The sample was
extracted from the ROSAT catalogs with constraints on the redshift
(0.0420). The global goal of
the WINGS project is the systematic study of the local cosmic variance of the
cluster population and of the properties of cluster galaxies as a function of
cluster properties and local environment. This data collection will allow to
define a local 'Zero-Point' reference against which to gauge the cosmic
evolution when compared to more distant clusters. The core of the project
consists of wide-field optical imaging of the selected clusters in the B and V
bands. We have also completed a multi-fiber, medium resolution spectroscopic
survey for 51 of the clusters in the master sample. In addition, a NIR (JK)
survey of ~50 clusters and an H_alpha + UV survey of some 10 clusters are
presently ongoing, while a very-wide-field optical survey has also been
programmed. In this paper we briefly outline the global objectives and the main
characteristics of the WINGS project. Moreover, the observing strategy and the
data reduction of the optical imaging survey (WINGS-OPT) are presented. We have
achieved a photometric accuracy of ~0.025mag, reaching completeness to V~23.5.
Field size and resolution (FWHM) span the absolute intervals (1.6-2.7)Mpc and
(0.7-1.7)kpc, respectively, depending on the redshift and on the seeing. This
allows the planned studies to get a valuable description of the local
